Harry Potter Fanfiction Fan fiction has become one dimension in which fans have complete control over the characters of their favorite universe. The 'Potterverse', as it has been aptly named, contains hundreds of twists on characters that were once the sole creative property of JK Rowling. These changes range from creating new relationships among characters, continuing plot lines, altering Milano a character's personality, to even creating new characters. Fan Liguria fiction is a way for the Harry Potter fan base to expand on their own ideas of the story, and completely disregard the Genova original version. Writers lurk on fan sites such as 'Mugglenet' Cinque Terre or 'the Leaky Cauldron', as well as setting up blogs dedicated La Spezia Imperia to fan fiction. Can be used as a verb to mean writing fics in which the relationship is central. "I usually ship Dramione. Theyre so much more fun to write than Ron/Hermione ships." OC(s): Noun/Adjective. An abbreviation for 'original character', or a character created by an author. "She's an OC". Can also be used to describe changes made to a character, so they are portrayed differently from the book. "Warning, contains OC-Draco. He has pink unicorn for friends, eats rainbows, and burps butterflies." OC personality: Noun. A personality belonging to one of JK Rowling's original characters, that has been altered. "Hermione has an OC personality in this fic. She doesnt like to study, and is a loner who ignores the rest of Hogwarts." AU: Adjective. An abbreviation for 'Alternate Universe' used to describe fiction that is not compatible with the flow of the original story or would never occur in the original Harry Potter world. "This fic is AU, and is set in a universe in which Professor Snape is wooed by an overeager Madam Pince." DH-compatible: Adjective. Used to describe fiction that is compatible with events from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. "I find fics that are DH compatible to be too angsty and depressing." Epilogue compliant: Adjective. Used to describe fiction that is compatible with the events from the epilogue of Harry Potter. "Epilogue compliant fics bore me." Fandom: Noun. As a noun it is used to to label the 'fankingdom' in which characters and events may not adhere to their original versions. "In the Harry Potter fandom, nobody is safe from random shipping" Fanon: Adjective. Used to describe anything which has been altered by an author, and differs from the original events of Harry Potter. *see also: OC, AU. "Warning, contains fanon Draco. His best friend is a house elf named Tinkerbell and he loves muggle disco music."

Fanfiction terminology continued: Movie-Verse: Adjective. Used to describe fiction that may not be faithful to the books, but adheres to events of the Harry Potter movies. "I've always been skeptical of Movie-verse fiction. It's not very realistic." Crossover Fics: Noun. A method commonly used by authors who cannot resist combining their favorite universes, or feel that 2 share many similarities and would make from an interesting combination. These fics combine elements of different books, movies, or comics. "Did you read that crossover fic? I loved it because I could read about Voldemort and Mrs. Lovett in the same story." Crack fics: Noun. Crack fics are the brainchild of late nights and too much caffein. They are written in a joking manner and often make no sense. Authors write these for fun and to amuse themselves when suffering immense writers's block. Crack fic is most often AU. "You've got to read this crack fic. Hermione dyes her hair purple and green, then turns Hogwarts into the nightclub of the wizarding world." Drabbles: Noun. Drabbles are short fics that are generally under 100 words. Theyre usually inspired by a word or an emotion, and depict simpler scenes and less plot than fanfiction usually does. Novellas: Noun. As in real life, novellas are multichaptered fics that contain complex plots and a developed storyline, and are just short of becoming novels. "That novella was so dramatic that I just gave up on trying to understand it." Time Periods: Authors are aware that there are many different timelines within the Potterverse. Fics may be set within the Founders' Era, the Marauders' Era, PreHogwarts (referring to Harry Potter's generation), the Golden Trio (referring to Potter's generation at Hogwarts), Post Hogwarts (referring to what happens after Potter's generation graduates), Second Generation (time periods that have the Potter generation's children as central characters), and AU (which encompasses time travel, modernizations, and all other time periods).

Famous Unconventional Couples of the Harry Potter Fandom Dramione: A term coined by the live-journal community of the same name. It ships Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger. Milano Fics often center around the challenges faced by the two in an Liguria effort to hide or maintain their relationship. Relies heavily on the phrase 'there's a fine line between love and hate' Genova Grabini/Hermionaise: Another term coined by live-journal Cinque Terre communities. These ships are Hermione Granger and Blaise La Spezia Imperia Zabini. These fics often follow different paths depending on Monaco which Blaise is used. Fanon Blaise is of italian descent and usually does not have blood prejudices (against muggleborns) unlike many of his housemates. He is often of mixed blood and is portrayed as being part Veela, which accounts for his mother's remarkable beauty. The Candy Cane Couple: Ships for Draco Malfoy and Ginny Weasley. The nickname refers to their hair colors, which are white-blonde and fire truck-red. Much like the Dramione ships, this ship centers around challenges faced by Draco and Ginny to have their relationship accepted by friends, family, and peers. The Dragon keeper and the Librarian: This ship refers to Charlie Weasley and Hermione Granger. As there is not much mentioned in terms of Charlie's personality he is generally fanon, and depicted as 'the 30 year old bachelor who finally fell in love'. Granger/Flint: An obviously named ship, it is of Hermione Granger and Marcus Flint. Entails the building and maintaing of a relationship most dont approve of, and relies heavily on the phrase 'opposites attract'.

Cliches of Fanfiction: ‘Im trying to be a very serious writer, but can only write crack-fic’ Horrendous fics written by 12 year olds, with a plot that consists of a multitude of OC characters that coincidentally resemble their friends. These OC characters are often in committed relationships with the characters of their choice. Often written "lyk thi$!!!!!!1111!!11!!!!1111oneoneoneoneone!!!!11 LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLROFLMAO!!!!111!!". Writers of this infamous fanfic demographic are known for their lack of creativity and loyal adherence to cliched plots. Some writers are not capable of using proper punctuation marks, or utilizing the ‘spell check’ tool on their word processors, and the majority make up for their lack of creativity with excessive descriptions. A short example: Dongju was sat in her spinning chair (with a high black, plastic back. And the red mesh seat) in her canary yellow hobo shirt (that wuz kinda see throo cuz she washed it two many tymz) and blue,pink,orange,yellow,sky blue striped pajama pants (jus b/c she wux cool lyke dat) and had an expression of supercalifragalistic-expialidocious Rage on her face, as she read the horrible attempt at fanfiction. ‘Im a very indecisive person that does not know the basic law of fractions’ The are fics where harry/ron/hermione have a hot/super powered/half veela/half vampire/half demented/half 'founder'/ half somehow related to voldie, twin/family member, that was previously not known of. these fics usually consist of over dramatic descriptions of sibling rivalry and conflicts that are anti-climatic. A Short exmaple: “AHHHHHH! who are you?” “Well its a really long story, but if you insist. I am your half veela, half vampire, half siren, half boggart, half troll, half mermaid, half centaur, half acromantula, half gnome, half kneazle, identical twin sister. Your father happens to be the evil megalomaniac that you’ve been trying to kill for 7 years now. When we were born he decided to send you off to live with muggles, because he thought it make for some really great dramatic irony after you succeeded in killing him. Oh and did I mention? I have super powers that allow me to read minds, fly at will, become invisible at will, conjure up forces of nature that are part of your worst nightmares, and I can force people to do whatever i want. Im also totally evil, and planning on stealing your boyfriend.”

Cliches of Fanfiction continued: ‘Im a romantic at heart, and I wish my love-life were more like this’ These are fics where dramione have been in secret relationship since 3rd/4th/5th/6th year and is rvelaed in 7th year much to horror of dumb&dumber/supportive friends (harry and ron, depending on which ver.) and the taunts/admiration of syltherin house (again, depending on the version.). Ron and/or Pansy will often think of some kind of plan to break up the two, and it will miraculously succeed. (considering the combined intelligence of the 2 barely rivals that of a flobberworm.. usually). Hermione and Draco will have jealous lover's tiff until one of the "good" characters gets them back together. This "good" character is often blaise zabini (who has secretly liked hermione since 3/4/5/6 but wants to see her happy with draco, Ginny who thinks Draco is uber-hot and is jealous but wants her to be happy/who doesnt understand why a smart girl like Hermione has fallen for Draco but still wants her to be happy/ Harry, who has stopped being the self centered idiot tht he is to realize that Hermione was actually happier with Draco than without him. Hermione and Draco get back together, and in the case of multi-chaptered fics, the epilogue involves ultra-mega-insanely sappy plot where hermione is either pregnant/has kids/both/ and/ or is sending her kids off to hogwarts/etc... with draco. yay. ‘Im a conservative person that likes having my plot written out for me’ Dry epilogue compliant fics that have ron & hermione, ginny & harry, and the rest of weasley clan. A Short example: “Oh Ron, We dont have time for you to play quidditch with Harry! We have to go meet your parents at the Burrow, for Sunday Brunch! Besides, he’s your brother in law. Cant you just see him next time we go see Ginny? Shes been asking me to come over and babysit their 23rd kid anyways.” ‘Im a true fanfic-er at heart, and the entire Potterverse is my creative playground.’ Second generation fics of scorpius and rose. Because nobody is safe from fandom, not even 11 year olds. A Short Example:

Mrs. Blackwell said so, very clearly, at the beginning of the year. I wrote down all the rules in the front of my notebook—so I wouldn't forget, of course—and, well, she really should have known, shouldn't she?" Frustrated, she twisted her body around until she was sitting, legs folded into a pretzel, arms crossed over her chest. "Do you think I'm a freak?" "Many children have imaginary friends. How old is she?" "Nine. She'll be ten in three months." "I see. Tell me, does she have any other friends, real ones?" "Well, Hermione's such a smart girl, and you know how children are…she's just never meshed well with other girls her age." Imagination The setting sun filled the back yard with golden light. Hermione sat, watching the dust motes swirling in the last light of the day. "It's tomorrow, you know." She glanced across the porch to a green and white lawn chair, twisting her hands in worry. "I'm afraid to go to Hogwarts, Lily. What if I can't find my classes? Or what if I don't know enough?" She paused, brow furrowed, lip clamped between her teeth. "What if I'm rubbish at it?" "You'll do fine." Lily smiled. "You'll love it, I'm sure." "But what if no one likes me?" "Nonsense. Why wouldn't they like you? Why, I bet you'll make a friend on the train, before you even get to Hogwarts." "You think so?" Hermione glanced up at the other girl, who was fading away with the evening sun. "I promise." Hermione watched as Lily slowly disappeared into the darkness. Sighing, she stood up, entering the back door and climbing up the stairs to her room; she had to pack, after all. And then maybe she'd read Hogwarts, A History one more time… …just in case. Mrs. Granger looked out the window where her daughter was sitting, speaking to what seemed to be an empty lawn chair. "Still talking to Lily, then?" Her husband asked, coming closer to peer out the window with her. She glanced down at the fine vellum envelope she held, the green ink boldly proclaiming its source: Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Her brow furrowed in thought—"You don't suppose…"—she looked up at the empty lawn chair, then back at the envelope once again. Mr. Granger followed her gestures, his gaze flickering between the empty chair and the envelope. Their eyes met. "Well, that's a relief," Mr. Granger said, smiling out the window at his daughter and her 'friend' before leaving the room. Mrs. Granger sighed; of course her daughter wasn't crazy, she was special. She was a witch.
