Attendance Policy and Class Participation: We will meet on twice a week for two hours. I expect you to come to each class session well prepared to contribute meaningfully in German to class discussion. I will subjectively evaluate the quality of your participation at the end of each class session on a six-point scale (100-94-86-80-74-68-62-50-0). Should you miss more than three class sessions unexcused, I will assign for each day of absence the grade of “0” (zero) and deduct from your final course grade “2” (two) point for each class session missed. The total number of points accrued by the end of the semester will determine this component of your final course grade. Homework will be assigned for every class session. Homework comprises discussions of written, audio and video texts as well as grammar and vocabulary exercises. You are required to submit electronically the answers to all exercises one full day prior to the next class session. If you fail to meet this deadline you will receive only half credit for work submitted by the time we meet for class; homework submitted after our class session will receive no credit. I will evaluate the content of each component of grammar, reading and listening assignments on the following scale: 75% or higher correct (3) — 60%-75% correct (2) — less than 60% correct (1) — not submitted (0). One of your major weekly assignments is to complete a brief composition based on exercises in the textbook. These compositions will be graded according to a rubric to be distributed in class. The number of points accrued for all homework assignments by the end of the semester will determine your final grade for homework. Quizzes on vocabulary and grammar will be assigned with at least one week advance notice. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped before the final quiz grade is calculated.
