Session 12 – God slot script In this session we’re thinking about how God speaks in unexpected ways and says unexpected things. So, let’s have a look at some of the unexpected ways in which God speaks and some of the unexpected things he says. Are you ready? Of course, I’m not just going to tell you about these things – that would be what you would expect. I’m going to do this in an unexpected way. Let’s begin with ‘Pictionary’.

Draw pictures to represent ‘Moses and the burning bush’. No speaking, hand gestures or writing words is allowed. Once the young people have guessed what you’re drawing, continue with the script. I bet Moses never expected God to speak to him through a burning bush. I also don’t reckon he expected God would ever ask him to do something that big. Moses must have been completely blown away when God told him to go to Pharaoh, ask him to release the Israelites after they had been slaves for hundreds of years, and then to lead them on an epic journey to the Promised Land. God speaks in unexpected ways and says unexpected things. Do you like charades?

Without speaking, act out the title of ‘Jonah and the big fish’. Once the young people have guessed what you’re acting, continue with the script. Jonah would have been shocked after God told him to go and preach to the Ninevites. They weren’t Jews – he didn’t want God to have mercy on them; he wanted God to destroy them! God said something that Jonah really didn’t expect. It’s not surprising that Jonah ran away! But then even more unexpected things happened – God made it quite clear how much he wanted Jonah to go to Nineveh by sending a fish to swallow him and help him on his way. Jonah really wouldn’t have been expecting that.

Right, let’s move on. How about a little bit of fancy dress combined with hangman?

Dress up as an angel (white sheet and halo should do the trick) and ask the group what you are! Then write the following dashes onto a large sheet of paper and play hangman. _ _ _ _! _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _. (Mary! You are going to have a baby.)

Again, I doubt Mary expected this. God speaks in unexpected ways and says unexpected things.

We’ve got time for one more example. Anyone for a mime?

Without speaking, act out the story of ‘The Good Samaritan’. Once the young people have guessed what you’re acting, continue with the script. When Jesus was on earth, he said some very unexpected things and often did so with stories that would have taken people by surprise. Does anyone know what Jesus was trying to communicate through this story? Perhaps this anagram will help you:

In advance, write this anagram on a large sheet of paper and hold it up at this point. VEOL ROUY IMESEEN [love your enemies] That’s right. Jesus was saying that we should love others – even our enemies! His Jewish audience would have been shocked that Jesus expected them to love the Samaritans, because Jews and Samaritans really didn’t get on. So you see, God really does speak in unexpected ways and says unexpected things.
