Introduction In consideration of the insured agreeing to pay Lumley the premium stated in the schedule, Lumley will provide the scope of cover stated in the schedule.

Definitions The words below (and any derivatives of them) have the following meanings when they appear in bold: Accessories: accessories and spare parts of the vehicle (including when temporarily removed from the vehicle), such as (but not limited to): on board computers, telephone installations, load securing or protection equipment in, on or in connection with the vehicle. This definition does not apply to any item of electrical or communication equipment not permanently affixed to the vehicle’s electrical system. Accident: a happening or event occurring in New Zealand that is unintended and unexpected by the insured. Agreed value: The gross value given on the current valuation provided by a certified valuer, or the full purchase price of the vehicle if purchased within the last FIVE years unless superseded by another certified valuation. A valuation is current for up to FIVE years from the date of issue. If no certified valuation is provided then market value applies. Bodily injury: the death of, or bodily injury to, any person, including disability, sickness, disease, shock, fright, mental anguish or mental injury.

Self Containment A remit was passed at the 2009 AGM where it is now a requirement of joining the NZMCA, that new members will have their motorhome/campervan/caravan certified self contained within three months of joining, or purchasing/completing their motorhome/campervan/caravan. There are three reasons why the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association Inc. is promoting self containment: 1. To protect the health and well being of our members when using their motor caravans. 2. T o protect the environment in which we live, and through this promote more stand alone areas where we may park without the support of services for three days. 3. To avoid financial impositions and prosecution for inappropriate dumping of waste. If you have a toilet, fresh water tank and wastewater holding tank why not see if your vehicle can qualify for a self containment warrant? The sanitation of vehicles is not covered by the plumbing and drainage regulations, so in 1976 the NZMCA Executive wrote a Standard of Self Containment for members to follow to equip their motor caravans satisfactorily. This became a national Standard which has been administered by the Ministry for the Environment since 1990. The Standard was reviewed in 2001. The new national Standard is the NZS 5465:2001, NZ Standard for Self Containment of Caravans and Motor Caravans. The New Zealand Motor Caravan Association encourages all members to make their vehicles selfcontained. A self-contained vehicle is designed to completely meet the ablutionary and sanitary needs of the occupants (including water for drinking and cooking) for a minimum of three days without requiring any external services or discharging any waste. Wastewater is collected in holding tanks then disposed of via a dump station. Dump stations are connected to reticulated sewerage or septic tank systems, therefore the treatments used in the wastewater must be approved toilet treatments that, when used in the right quantities, do not affect the operation of these systems. Dump stations are listed by Area in your Handbook Travel Directory. The Standard specifies the requirements for sanitary plumbing and drainage installations, making sure every motor caravan seeking a self-containment warrant is fitted with the following equipment: • Water supply (12 litres per person minimum) • Sink • Toilet (3 litre sewage tank capacity per person) • Holding tank (same or larger volume than fresh water) • Evacuation hose • Approved waste tank treatments • Sealable refuse container (with lid).

Certificate of Self-Containment A self-containment certificate proves compliance with the Standard. At present it is the option of the owner. However, in the near future it will become a requirement for “Independent Stays” where there are limited or no external facilities. Already, in many areas, independent stays are allowed only for self-contained vehicles, for example – district wide in the Tasman, New Plymouth, Clutha and Buller Districts; and on some reserves in the South Wairarapa, South Waikato and Waipa Districts. Every motor caravan equipped as per the Standard may be presented for the issue of a selfcontainment certificate and a warrant of compliance.

Self-Containment Of Motor Caravans Introduction Self Containment is the ability to meet the ablutionary and sanitary needs of the occupants of a motor caravan, for a minimum of three days, without needing any external services or discharging any waste. All waste and sewage is to be disposed of at a waste dump station, which is connected to a sewerage or septic tank system. You shall not use chemicals in the self-containment system that could affect the operation of the dump station and attached systems. The following covers the requirements for self containment in motor caravans only. For full details on Self-Containment purchase a Standard NZS 5465:2001 from Standards NZ, or contact a Self-Containment Testing Officer who has a copy of the Standard.

Water Supply The motor caravan shall be fitted with a fresh water tank. The tank shall hold at least 4 litres per person that the motor caravan is to accommodate for three days. (i.e. a minimum of 24 litres for two persons). The tank shall be: 1. M  ade of a material that is inert and opaque, and be capable of storing fresh water indefinitely, while maintaining its potability. 2. A  dequately supported and fastened to the motor caravan so that it does not cause any hazard whilst the vehicle is traveling on the road. 3. F itted with an inlet of not less than 25 mm diameter (or 12mm diameter if pressure fed), and have a cap or seal to prevent foreign matter entering the tank. 4. If of rigid construction have an air vent of not less than 6 mm, fitted with a device to prevent the entry of any contaminant into the tank.

Water Reticulation Water reticulation shall be in opaque non-toxic pipe. Clear plastic pipe shall not be used. A typical plumbing layout for a motor caravan is shown in Fig. 1. Explanation 1. C  lear plastic pipe admits light, which encourages the growth of algae in the pipe. This discolours the water, and has potentially harmful effects on your digestive system. 2. W  here a water-heating device such as a gas califont is installed, the hot water reticulation should be in 10 mm annealed copper or pipe suitable for hot water. This pipe is easily routed around corners and can be installed in one length from the gas califont to the outlet tap. The flow of water through the 10 mm pipe is more than adequate, as the gas califont restricts the water flow so that the gas flame will heat the water in the pipe as it passes through the flame. A large diameter pipe holds a lot of water which is wasted while waiting for the hot water to come through the pipe. Remember the more water you save the less you have to carry in the motor caravan fresh water tank and ultimately hold in the waste tank.
