Today’s presentation There is evidence for negative health disparities when people with intellectual disabilities are compared with their peers.

Reliable measures can help to gather comparable health data and to monitor change over time.

This presentation outlines the procedures adopted to develop and implement a set of health indicators for persons with intellectual disabilities in Europe.

(art 25).

Health disparities and intellectual disabilities

Measures of health: indicators

Indicators can be classified into six categories on the basis of what it is they measure: health outcomes, risk factors, intervention coverage, structure, process, and non-health-related results. Murray 2007

Survey of health of n=1269 persons with ID in Europe: some findings • Most participants (77%) lived independently or semiindependently, with their families or in group homes with fewer than 16 residents.

• Countries varied in the proportion of persons living in hospitals or nursing homes.

• About one-half of participants were in the ‘overweight’ or ‘obese’ categories.

• Rates of health checks were not optimal, especially for gender-specific conditions
