Heart Failure by Arnold M. Katz is a single-authored textbook on the pathophysiology, molecular biology, and clinical management of cardiac failure. It spans such widely separated disciplines as molecular biology, traditional biochemistry, organ physiology, and clinical cardiology. As a result, this thoughtful and knowledgeable book provides us with a unique and integrated view of this complex disease. Not too many authors are capable of successfully accomplishing such an immense task and making the resulting text enjoyable to read.However, as books on heart failure have become fashionableover the past few years, with numerous top sellers, Arnold Katz’s book will have to deserve its place within this cornucopia of available information on such a complex disease as cardiac failure, the mechanisms of which remain largely unknown. Despite this handicap, I feel that the book will be useful to medical studentsand trainees, as well as to practicing clinicians. In addition, basic scientists will appreciate the integration of information by a single author rather than the in-depth approach of specific areas of interest.
