Hell? Yes. Hell? Yes. of Hell and What Awaits Those Who Die Without Christ Understanding the Reality Understanding the Reality of Hell and What Awaits Those Who Die Without Christ

The message of Hell is missing from many churches today. We are now reaping the results of failing to bring that message. We need to “sound the alarm” in the church that Hell is a real place those that do not know Christ will inevitably go there. Paul said, “knowing the terror o f the Lord, we persuade men” (2 Cor. 5:11). God’s message on Hell is meant to be disturbing. William B ooth said, “If I could have it my way, I would not send my young ministers to seminary or Bible college. I would have all of them spend five minutes in Hell. After they had been in hell for five minutes, they would be motivated to become the greatest evangelists this world has ever known.” If we are going to prepare people for a place called Heaven; we must preach about a place c alled Hell. There are certain realities about Hell that we can glean from the Scriptures.
The ______________________ of Hell
SURVEY: 76% of the people polled believed in Heaven; but only 6% believe in Hell. The Los Angeles Times reported that the mention of “hell” from American pulpits is at an “all time low” as a result of the influence of secularism on Christian theology. There are 3 Common Views on Hell: 1. “The Hell W e Create On This ______________” – this is as bad as it gets! 2. “Annihilation” – teaches that the punishment for unbelievers is that they just simply cease to exist ( Revelation 20:14 proves this is wrong). 3. “______________________” – Because God is good, He will eventually welcome everybody with open arms into Heaven. Revelation 14:11 says, “And the smoke of their torment a scends forever a nd ever, and they have no rest day or night.” Jesus Himself repeatedly declared that there is a Hell and that Hell is an actual place (see Matt. 25:41,46). Jesus s poke on the subject of Hell 53 times. He spoke twice as much about Hell as He did about Heaven. Jesus wanted us to be assured of that fact that just as certain as there is a Heaven, there is a certainty of a place called Hell. If Jesus was deceiving us about the reality of Hell, how can we trust Him when He tells us about Heaven?
The _____________________ of Hell
Who are the residents of Hell? Matthew 25:41, “Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels.” Man was not made for hell and hell was not made for man. In Isaiah 14, Satan tried to take over the throne of God, but obviously failed in their rebellion. God prepared a place to eternally remind them of the consequences of their spiritual rebellion. Is Satan in Hell now? No. He is “the prince o f the power of the air.” However, during the last judgment of God, Satan and his demons will be c ast into the lake of fire with ever other unbeliever. Why? Because Satan chose to set himself in opposition towards God. There will be no resident in Hell that did not choose to spiritually rebel against God. Even though God did not create hell for people, those who make the same choice Satan did will suffer the same judgment. Matthew 5:30, “And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut if o ff a nd throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole b ody to go into h ell.” Jesus is not saying that you should mutilate yourself to go to Heaven. The point is, “Whatever price you have to pay – miss Hell! Don’t go to Hell no matter the c ost.”

What is Hell really like? The Bible uses three words to describe Hell: 1. “_____________” (Hebrew) or “_____________” (Greek) = the place of the dead. This is the place people go to now but it is not the lake of fire. Hades is a “holding cell” for unbelievers until their final judgment at the G reat White Throne. 2. “__________ of ___________” – Rev. 20:10, “Death a nd Hades were thrown into the lake o f fire. This is the second death, the lake o f fire.” 3. “____________________” – The word Jesus most often used. It was a place in Israel

where human sacrifices were made to the god Molech. It later became a city dump where fires burned continuously and the remains of dead animals and executed criminals were brought to be burned. Maggots worked in the filth and it was said that you c ould hear wild dogs gnashing their teeth as they fought over the rotting flesh. It was the most repugnant place in the known world. Jesus taught, “Do you want a picture of what Hell is like? Look at Gehenna!” Here is a Snapshot of What H ell Is Like… • _____________________ -‐-‐ Luke 16:24. Believers will receive a new body in Heaven, but did you also know that unbelievers will receive a new body that will allow them to endure eternal punishment in Hell? Their bodies will burn in the lake of fire but they will not be consumed. • _____________________ -‐-‐ Luke 16:25. In Hell, everyone will have a perfect memory and every regret will be eternally remembered. Much of the agony of Hell will be the remorse of knowing that they wouldn’t be there if they had made the right choice. • _____________________ -‐-‐ Mark 9:48 – Hell is a place where “their worm does not die, a nd the fire is not quenched.” Gehenna was a breeding ground for worms and maggots. Jesus says “their worm” because each person’s level of regret will be unique to that person’s life. It’s impossible to imagine having all of eternity to remember the things you would give anything to forget. • _____________________ -‐-‐ The Bible seems to indicate that just as there will be rewards in Heaven, there will likely be degrees of punishment in Hell. There are 18 passages of Scripture that seem to indicate that there are different levels of punishment in Hell (see Luke 12:28; Matt. 11:22) • _____________________ -‐-‐ The fear level will be beyond imagination. Psalm 73:18-‐19. What have been your most terrifying experiences on this earth? Those experiences are nothing compared to hellish fear. • ______________________ -‐-‐ Jesus said in Matthew 13:42, “And [God] will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping a nd g nashing of teeth.” There will be emotional anguish expressed by this continual, never-‐ending gnashing of teeth. • ______________________ -‐-‐ There is no purpose of any kind in Hell. Ecclesiastes 9:10, “No work, nor device, n or knowledge, n or wisdom in the grave [Sheol].” In Hell, you are a nobody regardless of any fame, fortune, or status you had on this earth. Psalm 88:12 and Isaiah 26:14 says that you will be forgotten by all. • ______________________ -‐-‐ Matthew 25:30 s ays that it will be a place of “outer darkness.” Jude 13 calls it the blackness of darkness forever. If you die without Christ, you will never see another glimmer of light. God is the author of light and in Hell, there will be no more light because God’s presence will not be there. • _______________________ Pit -‐-‐ Imagine the feeling of falling and every moment you fall further and further away from the only source of help, truth, and love. You know you’re going in the wrong direction and you’d give anything to go back but you can’t. • No ____________ or _______________ -‐-‐ Revelation 14:11 says that they have “no rest day or night.” No matter how much pain we have on this earth, our bodies will always give out and we will sleep…but not in Hell. There will be no relief at all. • ________________________ -‐-‐ It will be a place of complete isolation. You don’t have any friends, family, or fellowship in Hell. In essence, Hell is solitary confinement for eternity. • ________________________ -‐-‐ Proverbs 11:7, “When a wicked man dies, his hope perishes.” In Hell, there is no “next time” or a “second chance” – you are c ut off and banished from God’s presence forever. • ________________________ -‐-‐ Luke 16:26. The reality of Hell’s torment will be c ompounded when a lost person realizes that 100 trillion years from now – he will still be there.
The ______________________ from Hell
Our church exists because Hell exists. If there is no Hell and everyone is eventually going to go to Heaven – then we might as well close up our doors. All men are only a heartbeat away from death. Who do you know in your life that needs to hear the gospel? Life is not a game. We cannot afford to gamble on eternity. If today, you are not 100% certain of your salvation, you need to make sure you get it right. God has placed between you and Hell a bridge called the cross of Jesus Christ. He died in your place so you don’t have to go there if you choose to believe and receive His offer of eternal life.
