WELCOME >>> The Australian Festival of Travel Writing is now ready for boarding Get Out of Your Comfort Zone! This year’s festival will uncover the wonders and delights of crossing borders, challenging perceptions about other peoples, places, and politics, exploring the art and ethics of travel, revealing industry secrets and providing great insights into researching and writing travel narratives. We’ve lined up an excellent array of internationally acclaimed writers, broadcasters and travel authorities to inform, present new visions and encourage spirited debates about travel: from musings on new Burma and timeless India, to dilemmas about voluntourism and sustainability, tourism integrity in China, a surfer’s perspective of the world, grape-escaping and vagabonding, the business and pleasure of travel, writing workshops and writing competitions. Join the gathering for all explorers of humanity, from frequent flyers to travel dreamers! The world is a peaceful place when we get out of our comfort zones. A uniquely convivial gathering of international writers, unrivaled in the world of travel writing. Tilar J. Mazzeo is the New York Times best-selling author of books on wine, travel, French culture, and the history of luxury, including The Widow Clicquot: The Story of a Champagne Empire and the Woman Who Ruled It, The Secret of Chanel No. 5: The Intimate History of the World’s Most Famous Perfume, The Back-Lane Wineries of Sonoma, The Back-Lane Wineries of Napa, and the forthcoming The Ritz at War: Luxury in Occupied Paris. She divides her time between California wine country, New York City, and coastal Maine, where she is Associate Professor of English at Colby College.

A superb event, carried off with aplomb, and without a single hitch. Meg Mundell is a prolific author of fiction and a freelance journalist. She has written for major newspapers and for Lonely Planet. Her first novel, Black Glass (Scribe, 2011) won numerous awards. Her book-in-progress is a trucking memoir, Angel Gear: the Secret Life of Trucks.

The next best thing to travelling is the idea of travelling. I believe this festival is an important addition to Melbourne in its role as a City of Literature and also to the fields of travel literature, culture and industry in general. Elaine Lewis’ book Left Bank Walz (Random House in 2006) portrays her founding and running of the first Australian bookshop in Paris, a hub of Australian literature where she hosted, among many, David Malouf, Helen Garner, Nikki Gemmell and Nick Earls.
