Professor Ha-Joon Chang Reader in the Political Economy of Development at University of Cambridge

“23 Things They Don’t Tell You About Capitalism” 24 May 2011, Tuesday 10.00am - 12.00noon CSC Auditorium, Civil Service College

About the Lecture We may like or dislike capitalism, but surely we all know how it works. Right? Wrong. Today, most arguments about capitalism are dominated by free market ideologies and unfounded assumptions that parade as ‘facts’. With the help of the ‘Dead Presidents’ on the dollar bills, Walt Disney’s Rescuers, an Indian bus driver named Ram, and sheep-burning French farmers, Ha-Joon Chang’s new book, 23 Things They Don’t Tell You About Capitalism (Bloomsbury USA, January 2011), tells the story of capitalism as it is and shows how capitalism as we know it can be, and should be, made better.

In this lecture, Cambridge’s Professor Chang will argue why contrary to what most mainstream economists believe, that there’s no such thing as a free market; that most people in rich countries are paid more than they should be; that if you assume the worst of people, you get the worst; that free market policies rarely make poor countries rich; that people in poor countries are more entrepreneurial than people in rich countries; that more education in itself does not make countries richer; that equality of opportunity may not be fair; that financial markets need to be less, not more efficient; and that good economic policy does not require good economists!

This lecture is jointly organised with Economic Society of Singapore.

About the Speaker Born in South Korea, Ha-Joon Chang is a specialist in development economics and reader in the political economy of development at the University of Cambridge. In 2005, Ha-Joon was awarded the Wassily Leontief Prize for Advancing the Frontiers of Economic Thought. He is author of Kicking Away the Ladder: Development Strategy in Historical Perspective, which won the 2003 Gunnar Myrdal Prize, and Bad Samaritans: Rich Nations, Poor Policies and the Threat to the Developing World. His latest book 23 Things They Don’t Tell You About Capitalism was published by Bloomsbury Press in January 2011.
