1. Describe how you are qualified for this position. Please list up to 5 specific examples (i.e. College/High School leadership experience) that can help you prepare for a leadership role with PWBS? I think I am qualified for this position because I’ve been very much so involved in PWBS for the past two years that I’ve been at Penn. I’ve gotten a chance to know many of the girls very well, and I think that this is extremely important when it comes to being a leader in the community. I think I’m qualified for the position because this past year I was really able to strengthen my organizational and leadership skills while being Fundraising Chair for PWBS. We definitely went through a number of struggles with much bigger (and very successful!) fundraisers this year, but it definitely made us a much together community, and we definitely had so much fun in the process! In high school, I was President of the Women’s Forum for a year. We often discussed a

number of issues going on in the community at our meetings, and we also hosted a number of fundraisers. Currently I’m also on the PennPals Exec. Board as well, and I am Secretary for that. This position has really helped me strengthen my leadership skills as well because every board member is in charge of a liaison group, and we must deal with any problems that arise. I believe that my experiences, as well as my devotion and dedication to PWBS really make me qualified for this position. 2. Describe your current and past participation with PWBS. What PWBS activities and events have you attended, were you a part of a committee, etc.? I am currently the Fundraising Chair for PWBS. I spearheaded the big Cake Pop Valentine’s Day fundraiser this past semester, as well as organized a number of bake sales. I’ve attended almost every GBM this semester except a few. I’ve also attended most of the big events including Relay for Life and the Smokes Bake Sale. Additionally, I currently attend all of the Board meeting weekly too. 3. What ideas, plans, or visions do you have for PWBS next year? Please be as specific as possible. (List up to 3) Next year, I would really like to expand the physician shadowing program. I would really like to get doctors from different fields more involved in the program. Specifically, I would like to reach out to the OB/GYN department and see if any of the women doctors there would like to participate. Personally I am extremely interested in this field, and I think it would be great to include. Another thing I would like to do for PWBS is really pay a lot of attention to retaining membership. I think this is something that PWBS has struggled with in the past, but we have seen a TREMENDOUS increase in our membership over the past year, and this is so exciting! I really hope to keep this going next year by strategically planning the GBMs like Amalie did this semester (a more chill one, and then an academic one, and alternating). Also I think the survey at the beginning of the year (or maybe it was mid-year) was a great idea, because I would really like to continue to make PWBS a group/community for the girls and really listen to what everybody wants from PWBS. If elected Vice President, I would like to be involved with fundraising still. Although I would not be spearheading any of the fundraisers, I think I’ve gained a lot of expertise this year and would be very much so willing to help out – Fundraising Chair can definitely be stressful and I would really like to do as much as I can to help. I would also really like to strengthen the community in PWBS next year by having more interactive GBMs occasionally, like social mixers. I would also really like to encourage more hangouts outside of the GBMs. Especially for me, I’ve really gotten to know a lot of the Board this year and I think we would have a lot of fun together just hanging out on more of a regular basis in the midst of all our busy schedules! 4. How much time are you prepared to commit to PWBS next year? What other time commitments do you foresee, if any? I’m very committed to PWBS currently, and I plan on continuing to be very involved next year. Next year I will be Co-Director for PennPals. However, I am already on the Board for PennPals and I know how much of a time commitment it is already to be on the Board, so I think handling this will not be an issue. Furthermore, I will continue doing research next year, which will be at least about 10 hours a week. Again, I am already doing that this year, so that will also not be a big adjustment.

In high school, I was secretary (and a founding member of) a group called TASC (Tolerance, Awareness, and Social Consciousness), which was a global awareness and fundraising group. I organized events with speakers from various organizations (such as Invisible Children, Cradles to Crayons, etc.) and ran many fundraisers and volunteer activities, as well as keeping track of attendance and managing the group’s listserv (sending emails about GBMs, keeping the email list updated, etc.). I was also the vice president of public relations (junior year) and then president (senior year) of the Spanish Club, which was a culture and language club with over 200 members. There were many community-wide events to organize as president, and as VP of public relations I had to communicate with district leaders and local newspapers to advertise those events. Freshman and sophomore year (of college), I was on the scholarship committee for my sorority, for which I helped organize professor luncheons, ran study hours, and helped organize rewards for people who reached their academic goals/had great academic achievements during each semester. Throughout high school, I also volunteered with an organization called Cradles to Crayons, which collects, prepares, and distributes necessary items (such as clothes, school supplies, etc.) to children in need. I was my high school’s liaison with the company, and helped organize district-wide fundraisers and volunteering events. My senior year of high school, I was the editor in chief of the yearbook, for which I managed teams of photographers and copywriters (while communicating with representatives from publishing companies).

2. Describe your current and past participation with PWBS. What PWBS activities and events have you attended, were you a part of a committee, etc.? I joined PWBS this year, and I attend most of the GBMs (as many as I can). I also participated in the Sisters in Science program, as well as the Physician Shadowing program. 3. What ideas, plans, or visions do you have for PWBS next year? Please be as specific as possible. (List up to 3) One thing I think we could do is have luncheons (or panels, etc.) with Penn alumnae who are currently at Penn Med School (or any other medical school nearby) so as to pick their brains (about applying to medical school, what they thought was helpful when preparing and applying, etc.). My sorority set up a small, casual lunch with a girl who graduated from Penn last year (who goes to Penn Med now) and she was a great resource!

Another thing we could do is have luncheons (again, or panels…but everyone loves food!) with science professors (especially those who usually teach the common pre-med courses) so as to get to know them better before/while we’re taking their classes. I think it’d be nice to get to know our professors outside just the context of lectures and office hours! I also think it would be a good idea to have discussions with some of the upperclassmen in PWBS about specific pre-med classes (especially the notoriously difficult classes, like organic chemistry), in which we can discuss when it’s best to take the class, who the best professors are, how to study, where to find the best practice problems, etc. I know we did something similar to this during our Advanced Registration Panel, but I think it could be helpful to do more detailed/focused discussions about individual classes. 4. How much time are you prepared to commit to PWBS next year? What other time commitments do you foresee, if any? Next year, I’ll be volunteering in a lab a few hours a week, and I am in a sorority. Other than that, though, I won’t have any other activities that require a big time commitment. This year was really hectic and busy for me, but I should definitely have more time next year, and I would love to get more involved in PWBS!

Name: Rebecca Trillo School(s): College Year: 2016 Major(s)/Minor(s): Bio Major with Psych Minor Email: [email protected] Phone Number: 908-418-3661 Top position you will be running for: Secretary 1. Describe how you are qualified for this position. Please list up to 5 specific examples (i.e. College/High School leadership experience) that can help you prepare for a leadership role with PWBS? I believe I will be a good secretary because I am very organized and reliable. In high school I was the secretary for my local chapter of the Juniorettes, which is a community service organization. As secretary I gained experience recording the minutes at the meetings and was responsible for all of emails that were sent out to the members of the chapter, and I believe that this experience will be very useful to me as PWBS secretary. Also, I know this past year that the secretary assisted the community service committee, which I was a part of this year. If the secretary does the same thing next year, I already have experience with how the committee works and what kind of events they like to plan and be involved with, so I believe I will be well suited for the position. 2. Describe your current and past participation with PWBS. What PWBS activities and events have you attended, were you a part of a committee, etc.? This year I was a member of the community service committee. As a member of this committee participated in and helped out with several events including Kids Judge, the cupcake sale, the Smokes bake sale, and Relay For Life. I also participated in other PWBS evens like physician shadowing, and I attended almost every GBM throughout the year.

3. What ideas, plans, or visions do you have for PWBS next year? Please be as specific as possible. (List up to 3) I think it would be fun for PWBS to have a few more social events, like a movie night or a BYO, so that the members could get to know each other better. Also, I think next year the community service committee should try find a walk or 5K that the whole club could participate in. I also think that PWBS should try to have more physicians come to speak at the GBMs since these seem to be some of the most popular meeting among the members. It would be great if at the beginning of year we had members fill out a survey that told us which specialties they are most interested in so that we could try to bring in speakers that we know the members will find interesting. 4. How much time are you prepared to commit to PWBS next year? What other time commitments do you foresee, if any? I will be able to commit as much time as necessary to PWBS next year. The only other major time commitment I will have next semester outside of classes is a research position, but I will mainly be doing that in the early afternoons and will be free almost any night for PWBS meetings and events.

Describe how you are qualified for this position. Please list up to 5 specific examples (i.e. College/High School leadership experience) that can help you prepare for a leadership role with PWBS? In high school I held leadership positions in nearly every club with which I was involved. Senior year I was president of my Student Council, National Honor Society, and Interact Club, which was a community service-based club that partnered with Rotary. I have also been the secretary of my high school’s student council, so I have not only leadership experience but a pertinent position to what I would hopefully be doing for PWBS in the fall! As for at Penn, last year I help with the organization of Penn Preview Days as a shift captain, an experience I feel demonstrates my ability to organize for a larger group in a college setting. 2. Describe your current and past participation with PWBS. What PWBS activities and events have you attended, were you a part of a committee, etc.? This year is my first year being involved with PWBS, but unfortunately has been a tough year commitment-wise as I have been out of town with family troubles nearly every weekend of the second semester and unfortunately had to miss events such as the Columbia trip and Relay for Life. However, I have made it to every

GMB I possibly could have and helped with the decoration and distribution of the cake pops. Next year, regardless of whether or not I receive a nomination, I plan on becoming much more involved and joining a committee! 3. What ideas, plans, or visions do you have for PWBS next year? Please be as specific as possible. (List up to 3) First, I would like to see PWBS have a guest speaker or two that represent the few of us (like myself) that are not pre-med! I would be interested in coordinating a faculty chat with a professor who conducts research on campus in the medical field, and also with someone from CURF who could help younger members to better understand the process of becoming involved in research. Secondly, and along a similar note, I would like to see the physician-shadowing program extended beyond just physicians. I think it would be really interesting to have the opportunity to shadow local researchers or public health figures in order to see the other sides of medicine that perhaps you wouldn’t think about when doing a trip to just the OR. Of course, I would be more than happy to facilitate this addition to the current shadowing program. Finally, I envision a strengthening of the ‘sisterhood’ that an organization like PWBS has the potential to create. Although this may sound corny, I feel that it is really important for the girls to meet up more that once a week to study, de-stress, etc. Additionally, I would like to set up an informal e-mail or Google group where the girls could ask and answer questions for each other or set up hang outs outside of the GBMs! 4. How much time are you prepared to commit to PWBS next year? What other time commitments do you foresee, if any? I plan on dedicating myself 100% to PWBS next year! I am incredibly excited about using this society as an outlet for exercising my leadership skills that I feel have been untapped thus far in college. I really love everything that PWBS represents and am excited to pursue the commitment with an open mind and an open schedule!

High school: -Co-editor of school’s art and literary magazine, also the events manager as which I organized our poetry slams and increased historical turnout -Treasurer then vice-president of French club -Assistant teacher at California Tamil Academy College: -Assistant editor for Synapse: Undergraduate Medical Journal -New Initiatives Chair for Penn Science Across the Ages -on the Events Committee for PWBS 2. Describe your current and past participation with PWBS. What PWBS activities and events have you attended, were you a part of a committee, etc.? I joined the club my freshman year and although I was not part of a committee then, I attended many of the events and got to know the board members. Some of the things I participated in freshman year were some of the fundraisers, including the hot chocolate one, participating in the (Leukemia? Not completely sure I’m remembering it right) walk downtown, the physician shadowing program and multiple speaker and more casual club events. As a sophomore, I joined the events committee and had a really great time working with the girls in it. I helped brainstorm events, attended most if not all of the committee meetings, reached out to physicians for the physician shadowing program. I got to know more people in the club and really enjoy going to the meetings. 3. What ideas, plans, or visions do you have for PWBS next year? Please be as specific as possible. (List up to 3) -More social events so the group can really get to know each other better and have opportunities to casually talk about pre-medical life with upperclassmen giving underclassmen and each other some tips and tricks. A dinner, BYO or even ordering in food and having a “networking” opportunity would add another valuable dimension to the club. -More walks and one-time community service opportunities-again a great time to connect with peers in the group and be doing something good. -A panel on different types of research—there are so many different fields available to students at Penn but I feel that coming in, those with no previous research experience which is probably the majority, feel as if basic science research is the main viable type to get started in. We should give them the opportunity to get to know more before seeking out opportunities. Apart from clinical vs. wet lab vs. computational, we can also go over the different fields like developmental, immunology, virology, etc. Speaking from personal experience, I would have loved to have had the opportunity to learn these things earlier and in a more organized fashion than I did. 4. How much time are you prepared to commit to PWBS next year? What other time commitments do you foresee, if any? I’m willing to commit the amount of time it takes as a board member (from what I’ve heard about 2-3 hours a week which I can do). I will be taking a normal course load and continuing with my other activities including the clubs listed above, tutoring and research.

(List up to 3) - Insomnia Cookie Fundraiser for Charity – I have seen numerous groups this year work with insomnia cookies to raise money and it seems to be an extremely popular and successful way to do so. - Penn Medical School Tour/ Shadow Day – Maybe we could organize a day in which members could attend school with first or second year medical students to get a better idea of how medical school can be - PWBS BYO- This club is great but since it only meets once a week it does not foster much unity like other clubs do. I propose having a semester BYO to build more unity and so that not every meeting is so serious.

1. Describe how you are qualified for this position. Please list up to 5 specific examples (i.e. College/High School leadership experience) that can help you prepare for a leadership role with PWBS?  In high school, I served on my school’s Key Club Executive Board for two years and as President for my senior year. During this time I had to find volunteering opportunities in my community and I feel this experience will definitely be useful while serving in this position. From these positions I also learned how to coordinate with different organizations and I also learned the best ways to motivate general members to come out to service events.  I was also Editor-in-Chief of my high school newspaper, which allowed me to develop my skills in dealing with my peers and I think this skill would help me with motivating PWBS members to come to service events. I also was able to develop my organizational skills and learn how to take initiative, all of which would help me as community service chair. 2. Describe your current and past participation with PWBS. What PWBS activities and events have you attended, were you a part of a committee, etc.? I only just joined PWBS this semester, but I have been to ever GBM this semester and I am really loving the group and I want to get more involved! I was unfortunately already on a friend’s team at Relay, but I did come to Relay and participated in the PWBS Zumba! I also participated in the PWBS Physician Shadowing and it was extremely helpful! 3. What ideas, plans, or visions do you have for PWBS next year? Please be as specific as possible. (List up to 3)  I would love to begin a relationship with CHOP and Ronald McDonald House where, some girls could volunteer there with the children every week  I would also love to look for opportunities to collaborate with Penn Red Cross so girls could volunteer at blood drives  Lastly, I think it would be awesome if we could volunteer weekly at the Clyde F Barker Transplant House

4. How much time are you prepared to commit to PWBS next year? What other time commitments do you foresee, if any? I am prepared to commit at least 4 hours a week to PWBS. Besides my classes, I am in FIMRC and I hope to get involved in some research. I feel I would definitely have enough time to dedicate to PWBS. Name: Carly Sokach School(s): College (SAS) Year: 2015 Major(s)/Minor(s): Biology, Classical Studies Email: [email protected] Phone Number: 570-709-9548 Top position you will be running for: Community Service Chair 1. Describe how you are qualified for this position. Please list up to 5 specific examples (i.e. College/High School leadership experience) that can help you prepare for a leadership role with PWBS? Current Memberships and Leadership Positions: - The College Dean’s Advisory Board (DAB): DAB is the student advisory board for the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. We work on student planned initiatives to bring about change to the College both academically and socially (including the Bioethics minor, the Journalism minor, College Palooza, College Cognoscenti, etc.). In my one year on the board I have served as both Secretary for the entire board as well as Committee Chair for the project that I initiated dealing with reforming the Advising system within the College. These positions have put me in touch with many people dealing with the College Office and College administration at Penn. Also, working in the committee setting promotes team building as well as an adaptive nature in order to compromise with administration and work through any possible problems presented. - REACH for College Mentorship Program with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP): I am a mentor for the REACH program run through CHOP. This is a transitional medicine program that brings high school students with chronic illnesses to seminars to teach them how to deal with their chronic illnesses and stay healthy in college. The seminar occurs once a semester for two nights and involves both the students and their parents. I currently have integrated my field hockey team (Penn’s varsity women’s field hockey team) into this effort for the seminar this spring as the main volunteer source. I will be taking a leadership position with the organization in the summer as the program hopefully expands to be a year-round mentorship initiative. - Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY): HOBY is an organization based in localized seminar that aim to provide high school sophomores with the essential leadership schools to make differences in their local, university, and professional communities. I have continued to be involved in the Central PA branch ever since I attended the seminar as a sophomore in high school. This year I will be an associate facilitator, helping the lead facilitator lead and teach our group of 10-12 students throughout the 5 day seminar in May. - University of Pennsylvania Varsity Field Hockey: While being an athlete at Penn may not necessarily qualify me for a board position on PWBS, it had taught me some valuable lessons that would provide the board with a unique new insight. I work in a team setting every day with field hockey, requiring the synthesis of many opinions and personal contributions. Field hockey has also taught me to manage my time and balance

my schedule. I now invest heavily in clubs and organizations that I feel passionately about and divide my time around them. 2. Describe your current and past participation with PWBS. What PWBS activities and events have you attended, were you a part of a committee, etc.? I have been a PWBS member for 2 years now. Last year I attended GBMs, faculty chats, dessert sale fundraisers, and movie screenings. This year I am happy to say that I am a much more active member. I am a member of the Community Service committee, have of course attended GBMs, faculty chats, information sessions (advanced registration, MCAT, Princeton review, etc.), study breaks, and social events. I have also either baked and/or sold during all of our bake sale fundraisers. I participated in CHOP card writing as well. I helped attach the messages and deliver the cake pops for our large fundraiser. Finally, I applied for and was accepted to participate in the physician shadowing program. Due to some personal and family issues that I will describe more in detail later, I was unable to complete my shadowing this semester but I will hopefully be shadowing my physician when I am here during the summer working. 3. What ideas, plans, or visions do you have for PWBS next year? Please be as specific as possible. (List up to 3) I am incredibly passionate about community service and try to incorporate it as much as possible into my college life. I am also a major advocate for helping individuals find ways and the time to incorporate community service into their daily lives. As community service chair I would really like to give PWBS members more community service options that would basically allow them to find an organization or a particular volunteer activity that they are interested in and make it a larger part of their lives. Individuals are more likely to continue performing community service throughout their lives if they find an organization that they believe in and feel strongly about. In my opinion, community service in PWBS is currently focused around 2-3 major events, preventing our members from having that exposure. I would want to continue our participation in campus-wide events like Relay for Life and Take Back the Night. I would, however, like to initiate a larger PWBS-backed community service initiative that could either be exclusive to our organization or open to other Penn students. This event could involve campus-wide fundraising followed by participation in the event. The event would hopefully benefit a national organization in hopes of members developing ties with a set organization and continuing their participation and involvement at home. Second, I would like to support smaller weekly or monthly events in order to encourage frequent participation in community service. These events could involve several members getting together to volunteer at the Soup Kitchen to serve dinner on the first Friday of every month, volunteering at a local health clinic or similar events. These options would be regular and varied in order to allow participants to access a wide range of volunteer opportunities. Third, I would create a database on our website of potential volunteer opportunities and organizations that would require a more long-term commitment (suitable for during the summer and useful for inclusion on resumes). This database would be organized by major cities and would allow everyone in our organization to access the contact information for both national and local organizations that could benefit from volunteers. 4. How much time are you prepared to commit to PWBS next year? What other time commitments do you foresee, if any?

I am prepared to commit as much time as necessary to PWBS. Currently, my major time commitments include field hockey (daily practice) and Dean’s Advisory Board (2 weekly meetings). I definitely have the time to devote to PWBS and would be willing to rearrange my schedule to do so. Also, if elected, many of the projects that I am hoping to implement can at least be started and accomplish some logistical steps during the summer. I will be in Philly working an internship all summer and I feel like this would be a great way to spend my spare time. Thanks for your consideration!  Name: Iris Wu School(s): College Year: 2016 Major(s)/Minor(s): Biology Email: [email protected] Phone Number: 614-743-0958 Top position you will be running for: community service chair 1. Describe how you are qualified for this position. Please list up to 5 specific examples (i.e. College/High School leadership experience) that can help you prepare for a leadership role with PWBS? I was the secretary of my high school’s Medical Careers Club, and my tasks were primarily focused on contacting speakers to visit our organization and finding relevant events for the club to participate in. One such occasion involved our members staffing an event hosted by a local hospital that was offering free screenings for cardiac arrhythmia, following a tragedy involving a student in my grade. Also, I was vice president of French Club and set up collaboration between the two organizations for a Doctor’s Without Borders speaker. This was to raise awareness of the globalization of medicine, as well as the great potential and responsibilities to the world at large that the medical profession carries. Overall, I have experience not only participating in a wide array of community service events throughout my time in high school and at Penn so far, but also helped tailor it to the organization’s purpose. For instance, in my high school cheerleading team, we reserved a spot on a Race for the Cure walk route to cheer on the participants as they passed by. I like looking for ways to integrate the particular organization’s purpose to the event for the dual satisfaction of meeting the objectives of the organization and doing so in the context of a tangible, beneficial cause for the community. 2. Describe your current and past participation with PWBS. What PWBS activities and events have you attended, were you a part of a committee, etc.? I am a freshman, so this is my first year with PWBS. I served on the marketing committee, helping plan events such as the Halloween bake sale and with advertising, in designing and distributing fliers. With fellow committee members, I also brainstormed ideas on how to present the events on the website and Facebook page, which I jointly manage with Emily Zhang. For instance, I suggested that all photos taken at a particular event be sent to a common email address, so that they could be uploaded onto the Facebook page. To add incentive for photo submissions, I noted that we could allow photo submissions for a contest at the end of the year.

I helped staff the Halloween bake sale, deliver the Valentines Day cake pops, and attend the GBMs whenever possible. 3. What ideas, plans, or visions do you have for PWBS next year? Please be as specific as possible. (List up to 3) While I undoubtedly support the causes of the events we have had so far, such as the Relay for Life, I hope to schedule in more events like the Kids Judge contest that involves direct participation and for a more focused, concrete cause. I would like to take this further by finding organizations where the commitment is not on one odd occasion but something in which members’ involvement can be continued. For instance, at the moment, I volunteer with a free after-school tutoring program for the Philadelphia Bangladeshi community, consisting of a very recent group of immigrants. A number of the pupils are young girls, many of whom have interest in the sciences and perhaps the medical profession, so I hope that club members can offer their time to not only pass on their knowledge but also serve as role models to the female students. Members can go back each week, at any time slot they find convenient within the time that the program runs each day. It’s these smaller, lesser known communities where I feel we can make a significant, unmistakable impact. 4. How much time are you prepared to commit to PWBS next year? What other time commitments do you foresee, if any? I can commit up to a few hours per week for PWBS. At the moment, I am not sure what other organizations I will continue to be involved with. Besides coursework, one obstacle I see is the time I need to spend working in a research lab, but the hours are flexible.

Fundraising Chair Name: Kristy David-Ramphal School(s): College Year: 2015 Major(s)/Minor(s): Major: Biology Minor: Anthropology Email: [email protected] Phone Number: (631) 943-2470 Top position you will be running for: Fundraising Chair 1. Describe how you are qualified for this position. Please list up to 5 specific examples (i.e. College/High School leadership experience) that can help you prepare for a leadership role with PWBS? For fundraising chair: I organized a kick-a-thon fundraiser on my own at my karate school in high school to raise money for St. Jude’s children’s hospital. During freshman year at Penn, I was on the fundraising committee in APO. We organized a Rita’s Italian (Water) Ice fundraiser for schools in West Philly. Community Service: In high school, I was secretary of key club junior year and vice-President senior year. General Leadership: I am a peer advisor for the incoming freshman class. This will make me a good resource for other members in PWBS for selecting classes and general advice about being pre-med.

2. Describe your current and past participation with PWBS. What PWBS activities and events have you attended, were you a part of a committee, etc.? I have been involved with PWBS for the past two years. This semester, I tried my best to come to every GBM. The meetings I missed were mostly due to review sessions scheduled at the same time. I helped at the bake sale in the fall and this spring I attended Relay for Life. This semester I joined the events committee because I wanted to be more involved. 3. What ideas, plans, or visions do you have for PWBS next year? Please be as specific as possible. (List up to 3) If elected as community service chair, I would like to set up a reference page online for PWBS members with specific information on the processes for getting involved with clinical volunteering. I am currently in the process for becoming a volunteer at Planned Parenthood, the VA Medical Center, and CHOP, and I am familiar with the processes for HUP and the UCHC clinic. This page could also contain feedback from other members who have volunteered at the listed locations. In addition, as part of the planning committee for Take Back the Night, I would like PWBS to be more involved with this event next year. 4. How much time are you prepared to commit to PWBS next year? What other time commitments do you foresee, if any? At the moment, I am not on the board for any other clubs. I am in Alpha Phi Omega and ASAP, but these activities do not take much of my time. ASAP is one meeting a week and APO events are often during the day on the weekends. I do not plan to be working much in the upcoming semester, other than clinical volunteering once a week and possibly tutoring. I am willing to commit as much time to PWBS as needed. As a junior year I should have a good handle on time management (hopefully).

Name: Palmila Liu School(s): College of Arts and Sciences Year: 2015 Major(s)/Minor(s): Biological Basis of Behavior Email: [email protected] Phone Number: 469-667-3538 Top position you will be running for: Fundraising Chair 1. Describe how you are qualified for this position. Please list up to 5 specific examples (i.e. College/High School leadership experience) that can help you prepare for a leadership role with PWBS? I served as president of the Penn chapter of AMWA (American Medical Women’s Association), which involved organizing GBMs and board meetings, coordinating trips to volunteer at the Eliza Shirley Shelter (a homeless women’s shelter in Center City), pursuing new community service initiatives, and working to receive CHAC recognition. In high school, the most notable leadership experiences I had were as vice president of my school’s French club, as well as co-founding the engineering club. For both, I helped to manage

finances and competitions. For French club, I organized and directed events, such as picnics, the annual Mardi Gras mini-carnival, monthly French movie night dinners, and French caroling at nursing homes. For engineering club, I helped to arrange and lead engineer speaker events. Ultimately, through each of these experiences, I’ve learned a lot not only about myself—what I am capable of and what I lack—, but also about the skills necessary to become an effective leader. I’ve learned not only how to have a vision for the group, but also how to convey it in a way that serves to inspire the group as a whole. Perhaps most importantly, I’ve learned about responsibility—that becoming involved yourself in an organization isn’t conditional upon how free you are on a particular week. I’ve learned that instead, becoming a part of a group means making, rather than finding, time for something that you hold a particular passion. 2. Describe your current and past participation with PWBS. What PWBS activities and events have you attended, were you a part of a committee, etc.? I’ve been involved with PWBS ever since the fall semester of my freshman year. Being a part of PWBS has been an amazing experience so far, especially with regards to the mentorship and community involvement. It’s been uniquely inspiring to listen to the experiences of those in the medical / research fields now, as well as to get to know the other members of the group. Aside from regularly attending the weekly GBMs / speaker events, I’ve been actively involved on the fundraising committee for two years now. I’ve had a lot of fun and have overall really enjoyed being able to work together with the committee to organize the bake sales (Light the Night last year, and the Smokes / fall events this year) and the Valentine’s cake pop fundraiser. 3. What ideas, plans, or visions do you have for PWBS next year? Please be as specific as possible. (List up to 3) I’d think it’d be great to see PWBS continue to expand its presence on campus. One possible avenue we could explore might be to collaborate with other groups on campus, with regards to community service opportunities. Girl Scouts at Penn, for example, holds a science and technology fair for Girl Scouts in the Philadelphia community, where different campus organizations hold an educational twenty-minute “segment” on that year’s theme. (Last year’s theme was “scientific legacies,” celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Nobel Prize being awarded for the molecular structure of DNA). It might also be interesting to invite dual-degree medical school students to speak to the group. I know we’ve had several MD/PhD students for panels this past year, but it might be worthwhile to gauge the possible interest in learning about different MD combined degree programs (MD/MBE, MD/MBA, MD/MPH, etc.) and how students pursuing these combined degree programs envision their future careers. 4. How much time are you prepared to commit to PWBS next year? What other time commitments do you foresee, if any? Around five hours a week on a regular basis, or more if a particular event is taking place that week. I’m prepared to dedicate any amount of time necessary to fulfill my own responsibilities and to help out with the organization in general.

Possible time commitments:  AMWA: 3 – 4 hours/week.  Possibly TA’ing again for Pipeline: 3 hours/week, but during regular high school hours.  Possibly returning or finding a new lab research opportunity: 5 – 10 hours/week.  Possibly enrolling in a MCAT class in the spring. Name: Kinjal Shah School(s): SEAS Year: 2016 Major(s)/Minor(s): Bioengineering Email: [email protected] Phone Number: 908 315 6945 Top position you will be running for: Fundraising Chair 1. Describe how you are qualified for this position. Please list up to 5 specific examples (i.e. College/High School leadership experience) that can help you prepare for a leadership role with PWBS? I believe that I am well qualified for this position because of my experience as part of the fundraising committee this past year. As an extremely involved member of both PWBS and more specifically the fundraising committee I attended most if not all meetings and also helped plan and attended all fundraising events including the cake pop sale and the bake sale. In high school I also had many leadership positions that required me to plan fundraising events as well as GBMs and community service events. For example, as Co-Founder and Vice President of Montgomery High School’s first Community Service/Pen Pal club, I helped plan numerous bake sales as well as ran advocacy campaigns and expanded out club in its first year to include over 70 members. Additionally, as Public Relations Secretary for my high school’s Interact Community Service Club I helped plan the Man of the Year fundraising event which is Interact’s main event of the year and also helped to plan bake sales, t-shirt sales, and helped orchestrate a school-wide hoodie in which we raised funds for Homes for Hope. Additionally, I gained even more experience fundraising as part of the Fundraising Committee for Penn Timmy Global Health through which I have planned a movie night, contacted various restaurants for collaborations, and have begun planning a large event for next semester. Also, as an engineer, I would be able to help any engineers that join the club in discussing how pre med requirements fit into engineering majors. Also, I have been an EMT in the past and have also volunteered at hospitals and shadowed physicians and so I believe I would be able to help give advice to younger members. Thus, through these various experience I feel that I will be extremely well qualified and dedicated to this position because of the experience I have had as well as because of my dedication to PWBS. 2. Describe your current and past participation with PWBS. What PWBS activities and events have you attended, were you a part of a committee, etc.? As a freshman, this was my first year participating in PWBS and it was one of the best decisions I made in my time here at Penn. I attended every GBM I was able to and also was part of the Fundraising Committee. As a member of the Fundraising Committee I came to almost all fundraising committee meetings as well as helped plan all fundraising events included the bake

sale and the cake pop sale. We also had plans for a Butter Beer sale but due to time, costs, and feasibility this was not able to be planned for this semester. Additionally, I attended Relay for Life this past week and met a lot of the members on a more personal level which was a lot of fun since I have not gotten to know many of the members through GBMs. Overall, I believe I have been an involved member in PWBS this past year and I would love to be able to continue this involvement as part of the board. 3. What ideas, plans, or visions do you have for PWBS next year? Please be as specific as possible. (List up to 3) I believe that PWBS can do a lot more with fundraising and community service as a science oriented club. One idea that I had is that we could collaborate with Penn Science Across Ages to help bring young females from around West Philly to Penn and teach them about being pre med and the things they could possibly do while still in high school. In this way we would be able to share our experiences and help young women interest in biomedical sciences. Additionally, we could also collaborate more with the med school and perhaps organize tours of the various departments of the medical school or the hospital for those who may be interested. This would really help students at Penn see what part of medicine excites them. Also, this may lead to opportunities to talk more with physicians and professors. Lastly, I really feel that the club should have more bonding events and perhaps have a mentoring program within the club which would match upper classmen with the underclassmen in the club to help answer questions about medical school, applications, areas of interest, etc. I think this program would also foster more community within the club. 4. How much time are you prepared to commit to PWBS next year? What other time commitments do you foresee, if any? I am prepared to commit as much time as is needed in order to make all of our goals a reality as I really enjoyed being a part of PWBS this past year and would love to give other members the same experience next year if given the opportunity. The only other time commitments I have at the moment are that I am part of Penn Model Congress and Penn Timmy Global Health which require monthly or bi-monthly meetings and so should not interfere with my involvement in PWBS. I am extremely dedicated to the club and would be excited to be a part of the board next year.

1. Describe how you are qualified for this position. Please list up to 5 specific examples (i.e. College/High School leadership experience) that can help you prepare for a leadership role with PWBS? As Public Relations Chairwoman, I would like to broaden our scope of contact with other groups and continue to strengthen our prevalence on campus. I feel qualified by being a people-person and so am able to reach out via phone/in person/email to companies like Princeton Review to discuss ideas. I also have gotten to know different people from different groups around campus that could help us branch out. Also in this job description is marketing (I believe), and I would love to get involved more with designing flyers/apparel to publicize our society. In the past two years at Penn, I have served as Secretary of PWBS, Class Rep for Alpha Iota Gamma (pre med frat), Peer Advisor for the College, and Programming Chair for the Rodin Theater Residential Program. Through these roles, I have gained experience reaching out to people, making sure people feel included, and communicating to people what needs to be done (delegating-wise) or advice (from me or higher sources). I feel that I have a lot to contribute still to this organization, and would be very happy to fulfill that as Public Relations Chair, Secretary (again), or Webmistress! 2. Describe your current and past participation with PWBS. What PWBS activities and events have you attended, were you a part of a committee, etc.? I have been with PWBS since freshman year. Last year I participated in our MCAT Quizzo and attended general meetings as well as partook in the Physician Shadowing Program. This year I served as Secretary on board and sent out emails each week. I came to the GBMs, both faculty chats and social events. On the side, I recruited a few girls to join us as well. I participated in our Relay for Life event with advertising and leading Zumba!! :) Also, I helped run a shift at the Kids Judge! Event. I was also co-committee chair with Diana for Community Service. While CHOP was pretty strict in letting us come to visit, I understand better what should be done in the future. Our committee meetings, though few, were productive in generating ideas that the girls were interested in seeing our society achieve. I think we can improve how we go about it next year.

3. What ideas, plans, or visions do you have for PWBS next year? Please be as specific as possible. (List up to 3) 1. I would love to get PWBS to partner with more groups, pre med or other professional, to hold events and speakers on a larger scale. We could join up with PMA/the Women’s Center (more)/LPMA (new)/sororities (ZTA perhaps? Philanthropy is Breast Cancer or APhi again for Cardiology-related philanthropy). 2. I would like to have some discussion-based meetings such that more people are involved with the activity and can learn more about Healthcare, for instance, and current medical events. Maybe just as simple as starting off each meeting with a current event and then having the girls either in groups as ice-breakers or as a whole say something.

3. I also think we should improve upon things we tried out this past year! We should bring back an MCAT Quizzo event and publicize better. We should get a group together for CHOP every other week to volunteer maybe. Or once a month. We should make the Sisters in Science a more structured opportunity by meeting with your group after each meeting or something. And finally, the Study Buddies: we should re-establish groups throughout the semester so that people, especially freshmen, don’t forget about the opportunity.

4. How much time are you prepared to commit to PWBS next year? What other time commitments do you foresee, if any? I am involved on campus with ZTA, AIR (premed frat), and Club Tennis. I will be starting as an RA next year though, and so in the beginning of the fall I might be pressed for some time, but if I take on something it will get done. I will be able to do both board and GBM meetings next year (if we can change the Tuesday time? If not I’ll be able to come the first half-hour on Tuesday) plus the necessary planning/talking time that the position should require. And as a side note, I’ve really loved being in PWBS. I’ve not only made some amazing friends here, but I also have learned so much. I would not have the scope of knowledge I currently do about being a pre-med woman had it not been for this club. Being on board and seeing the inner-workings and making a difference for everyone involved has been truly rewarding.

Budget Manager Name: Diana Blidarescu School(s): College Year: 2014 Major(s)/Minor(s): French Studies / Chemistry, Biology Email: [email protected] Phone Number: 408-702-5204 Top position you will be running for: Budget Manager 1. Describe how you are qualified for this position. Please list up to 5 specific examples (i.e. College/High School leadership experience) that can help you prepare for a leadership role with PWBS? 1. My past experience as Community Service chair has prepared me for a board position in PWBS. I understand the time commitment and work load that PWBS presents and I am more than ready to tackle the job. 2. Working in a research lab has prepared me for the position of Budget manager. Being responsible for running my own experiments required me to prepare ahead of time and keep track of lab reagents. You must plan in advance to obtain the necessary reagents for your experiment. This job pushed me to be conscientious about my work, and it will make me aware of how PWBS spends its budget. 3. Through my experiences volunteering and traveling abroad, I am well-versed in communicating with others. I am able to represent PWBS in a professional manner. The

position of Budget Manager requires interaction with the administration (SAC), and I am capable of discussing our needs with SAC to obtain the funding we need. 2. Describe your current and past participation with PWBS. What PWBS activities and events have you attended, were you a part of a committee, etc.? Since freshman year I have been a PWBS member. I was paired up with Stephanie Baranovic in the Sisters in Science program, and she was an invaluable mentor to me. PWBS was truly a great resource for me as a freshman when I was figuring everything out. It is a great feeling to be on the other side of that relationship and to now offer advice to others about the pre-med life at Penn. I enjoyed participating in the MCAT Quizzo event last year, and I think that this event has a lot of potential for next year. Last year I served as the PWBS representative to PCUW, and I hope my schedule permits me to resume that responsibility next year. As Community Service chair, it has been incredible participating in Relay for Life and seeing the passion that Penn students have for their community. 3. What ideas, plans, or visions do you have for PWBS next year? Please be as specific as possible. (List up to 3) 1. Cooperating with other organizations for fundraisers: From my experience in the fundraisers this past year, I saw the need for more woman power and more publicity. I believe that it would be really beneficial financially as well as socially to work with other female or pre-med organizations. As some of our members are in sororities or pre-professional fraternities, there is a huge untapped resource that we should utilize. 2. Growing in campus presence: While our listserv reaches hundreds of women on campus, there is still room to grow in terms of PWBS presence of campus. I would like to establish a more defined identity of PWBS. One potential idea to achieve this is to develop closer ties with the medical school. It would be great if the students and faculty were more aware of us. I think a mentoring program between PWBS members and medical students is an achievable goal for next year. 3. Setting a budget: While my predecessor did a fantastic job of understanding our club’s finances and being responsible for the funds, I would like to establish a system which makes it easier for the entire board to understand how much money is allocated to us and how we can spend it. During social events, there was a lack of organization in terms of spending money. It would easier to establish a set protocol. It is crucial we get a club credit card and bank account and that we set up online banking so that we can plan our events more smoothly. 4. How much time are you prepared to commit to PWBS next year? What other time commitments do you foresee, if any? I am prepared to commit up to 5 hours a week for PWBS next year. Other commitments include involvement in the Penn Bioethics Journal, working in a research lab, being a Big Sister, and volunteering at the Veterans hospital.

Describe how you are qualified for this position. Please list up to 5 specific examples (i.e. College/High School leadership experience) that can help you prepare for a leadership role with PWBS? I have been managing the PWBS website for the past two years, so I have thorough knowledge about all the technical details of the website. In the past two years I have added many new features to the site and maintained it regularly. Of course, I am committed to further improving the site whether it’s through my own ideas or other members’ suggestions. I am also the co-chair of the marketing committee. Together with Kelsey and our committee members, the committee has used Facebook, Twitter, and the website to effectively advertise our events and our club to reach new Penn students. For the past two years, as a part of the board I have always worked cooperatively with the other board members on our events and GBMs. And it has always been fun, even when things get a little crazy some times. 2. Describe your current and past participation with PWBS. What PWBS activities and events have you attended, were you a part of a committee, etc.? I have been part of PWBS for the past three years. As mentioned above, I have been PWBS’s webmistress for the past two years. I am currently co-chair of the marketing committee, and I was co-chair of the fundraising committee last year. A great part about the PWBS board is that we all work closely together with each other for events and activities, so I have helped with and/or attended a majority of PWBS events such this year as the activities fairs, Relay for Life, and, of course, our Cake Pops sale. I also attend GBMs regularly. 3. What ideas, plans, or visions do you have for PWBS next year? Please be as specific as possible. (List up to 3) A major goal for PWBS has always been to expand and recruit new members. I think for next year, we should use Facebook and listservs more to try to reach more Penn students. To have more member participation and general interest in leadership positions, we can have our members organize/plan a GBM on their own. For the website specifically, I think it would be helpful to have a page that contained all the opportunity announcements included in each email. Sometimes so many things can be hard to keep track of, so it’s helpful to have everything organized into one page.

4. How much time are you prepared to commit to PWBS next year? What other time commitments do you foresee, if any? Besides from classes and doing research, I don’t have any other major time commitments next year. I’m prepared to commit 5hrs/week to PWBS or as much time as needed.
