Introduction

● Transfluthrin is a fast-acting pyrethroid insecticide with low persistency. ● Transfluthrin can be used in the indoor environment like mosquito vaporizers and sprayers against flies, mosquitoes and cockroaches. ● Transfluthrin, may cause symptoms of poisoning including nervousness, anxiety, tremorskin allergies, sneezing, running nose and irritation. ● Its also a Neurotoxic chemical.

Methodology

The principles of laboratory animal care were approved by the Institutional Animal Ethical Committee (IAEC) Entomology Research institute, Loyola College, Chennai (Proposal Number: IAEC-ERILC-03/14). ● Wistar rats (21 days old Female) – 32 animals ● Pyrethyroid insecticide – transfluthrin ( used in mosquito vaporizers, coil and mats) ● Rats were maintained in plastic cages lined with heat-treated pine shavings bedding. Temperature, humidity, and light. rats were used and fed with standard pellet ● Rats were divided in to 4 groups ● One Group had exposure to normal air – control ● Other 3 groups were exposed to chemical in various concentrations 1 mg/kg,2 mg/kg,4 mg/kg ● Chemical Exposure was 4/H/day single exposure ● 14 days observation was done ● Samples were collected on 7th day and 14th day ● The animals were sacrificed by cervical dislocation (Ferah et al 2005) and the brains and lungs were dissected out, weighed and used for HISTOPATHOLGICAL analysis and SDS – PAGE profile.

● The results of the acute toxicity studies of transfluthrin on Wistar rats showed that the LC50 value was > 4 mg/kg. ● No mortality was observed in any of the control and test groups.

Discussion

This study clearly demonstrated that inhalation of transfluthrin caused notable histopathological changes in the brain and lungs, as well as in Protein Profile of the rats

Implications

1. Transfluthrin usage causes hazardous effects at various levels to Non target Organism like Rats and other mammals, including human beings

2. Pyrethroids based insecticide usage of Phytochemical Bioinsecticides may lead to less adverse effect than chemicals
