OPTIONS FOR LEARNING

Honors Diploma Program Students interested in participating in the Honors Diploma Program should contact the JHS gifted & talented coordinator Meredith Aby for an application. The application can be filled out at any point during the four years but no later than February of the student’s senior year. Careful thought in course registration is essential to successfully completing the requirements of the program. Please plan accordingly when making course selections.

THE HONORS DIPLOMA Introduction: The Honors Diploma Program is designed for students who wish to participate in a comprehensive, 4-year advanced academic program resulting in honors graduation. It is available in all grade levels and offers a wide variety of topics and subject matter. In order to receive an honors diploma, a student needs to maintain at least a B average and complete honors, or advanced placement courses, in language arts, social studies, science, and/or mathematics. At least 2, but no more than 6 of the credits required, must be in, art, music, world language or Project Lead the Way. To complete the honors diploma requirement in art, a student needs to take the prerequisites for Honors and/or AP art plus the Honors or AP Art class. In music, a student must be in Wind Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, or Connection. In World Languages, a student must complete courses through the Advanced Placement level. To complete the requirement in Project Lead the Way students must take at least one Project Lead the Way course. Note: Students must complete all terms of a course to receive credit toward the honors diploma.

Courses that fulfill the requirements of the Honors Diploma Program: Each trimester of any Honors, AP, or Project Lead the Way course taken will count as one credit toward the Honors Diploma. Courses taken prior to the transistion will be granted 1 credit for each term taken. Language Arts

The Honors Diploma program offers students a way of demonstrating their desire to pursue an advanced course of study throughout their four years in high school. The courses included in the program provide an opportunity for students to enrich their learning experience, cultivate habits of independent analysis, creativity, collaboration, leadership, and intellectual skills. Success on AP exams can even provide college credit for work done here at Jefferson.
