Course Description Haruki Murakami is one of the most influential contemporary Japanese writers. In this course, students will read his major works (in English translation) in chronological order and examine how the writer’s work has been transformed throughout his career. The course will also explore social, cultural and/or historical contexts of each work. An emphasis is put on careful reading and students’ own creative interpretation of texts. Academic Dishonesty Policy The College's Honor Code will be enforced. Grading Scale • 15% Discussion questions - Submit a discussion question the night before each class session by email. It’s due at 2:00 a.m. on the day of each class. I will compile them and present them in class and in WebCT after class. • 20% Response journal- Each student keeps a journal in WebCT. You can post as many times as you like in a given week. Write at least 200 words in total per week. • 30% Three analysis papers (500-600 words each) - Read the instructions and study the sample paper provided in WebCT carefully. Upload the files in WebCT. • 15% Midterm exam (an online, open-book exam) - We will not meet in the classroom. It will be available in WebCT at 9:25 a.m. on the exam day. Download it, open it, take the exam, and upload it back in WebCT by 10:40 a.m. • 20% Final exam (an online, open-book exam): We will not meet in the classroom. It will be available in WebCT at 8:00 a.m. on the exam day. Download it, open it, take the exam, and upload it back in WebCT by 11:00 a.m. A 100-90 B+ 85-89 B 80-84 C+ 75-79 C 70-74 D 60-69 F Below 60 • No make-up exams or late assignments will be accepted unless the reasons are beyond your control and can be properly documented. • Regardless of the type of assignments, everything you write must be spellchecked and follow the rules of standard English grammar and composition. • All the references to texts must be accompanied by page numbers. • All the papers and exams must be submitted in either the Word format or Rich Text Format (RTF) in WebCT.
