Keywords Goodeidae . Central Mexico . Zacapu Lake . Endangered

Common name: Cherehuita. Conservation status: Endemic, endangered, NOM-059-ECOL-2001 (DOF 2002). Should be included in Appendix 1 of CITES as critically endangered according to the IUCN criteria (Domínguez-Domínguez et al. 2008). Identification: Differs from the other Goodeinae by the presence of 30–37 dorsal rays. Drawing by Aslam Narvaez-Parra (UAQ). Recently, Hubbsina was proposed as a synonym of Girardinichthys and H. turneri as a different species, Girardinichthys ireneae (Radda and Meyer 2003). We do not agree with these proposals, according to molecular and taxonomic studies (Moncayo-Estrada 1993; Doadrio and Dominguez-Dominguez 2004). Distribution: Cuitzeo Lake basin, Michoacán (without records since 1980) J. P. Ramírez-Herrejón (*) : M. Medina-Nava : O. and currently restricted to Zacapu Lake Basin, Michoacán. Type locality: Cointzio, Michoacán, Mexico. Abundance: low: in Zacapu Lake comprising 9.7% of total fish numbers (0.076 individuals·m−2) (Moncayo-Estrada 1993). Habitat and ecology: Inhabits lentic ecosystems: mean temperature of 18.0± 1°C, high dissolved oxygen and high transparency. Feeding: Carnivorous second order consumer, diet includes microcrustaceans, chironomids, and amphipods (Moncayo-Estrada 1993). Reproduction: Matrotrophic viviparous, reproductive period extends from April to November, 2-month gestation period. Threats: wastewater from and water extraction by Zacapu city, and the introduced exotic fishes: Cyprinus carpio, Micropterus salmoides and Oreochromis spp. Conservation action: Zacapu Lake was declared a regional park in 2004 and a RAMSAR site in 2005; however, no conservation actions have been taken. Two wastewater drainage channels have been constructed to bypass the lake, although heavy rain causes overflow into the lake. Conservation recommendations: Waste-

water should be diverted from the lake. Pumping of spring water should be restricted. Introductions of exotic species should be prevented. An assessment should be made of the current environmental condition of the lake. The captive breeding program conducted at UMSNH, in Morelia, Michoacán, México, should be reinforced by other universities or organizations. Indiscriminate collections of this species should be actively discouraged.
