Dietetics is the application of the science of nutrition to the prevention and treatment of disease and the promotion of health. In order to do this, students require an in-depth understanding of nutrition and metabolism gained from a combination of studies in physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology and food science. This can then be combined with consideration of the many factors influencing food intake, including social and psychological. The programme offers the opportunity for students with an interest in science, food, health and people to combine all these elements and ultimately to apply their knowledge in a future career in nutrition and dietetics and the promotion of health. The Department of Life Sciences has a long track record in dietetics education and has a first class reputation within the profession for the quality of its graduates. This is achieved by a blend of top quality teaching in excellent facilities alongside the development of independent learning skills in the students to allow them to reach their full potential. The BSc (Hons) Human Nutrition and Dietetics degree programme is designed to equip students with the knowledge, expertise and understanding necessary to perform as an effective practitioner in the 21st century enabling safe, ethical and dynamic practise. Students will find this course both enjoyable and challenging as they study the scientific basis of human health, assisting with the management of disease by diet and lifestyle changes.
