Our programme • • •

A 32-hour course specifically developed to prepare practising lawyers or trainees for the ILEC exam Training focused on all four skills: speaking, listening, writing and reading Extensive work on expanding legal and business vocabulary and improving accuracy

What are the aims of the course? • • • • •

Improved drafting of common legal communications in English More accurate understanding of different types of legal texts Better comprehension of spoken English on legal topics Study of common language pitfalls in commercial legal practice Familiarisation with the tasks in the ILEC exam

Why choose the ILEC? The ILEC is a high-level language qualification for lawyers (set at levels B2 and C1 of the Common European Framework of References for Languages) and assesses language skills in a legal context. It forms part of the Cambridge ESOL1 examinations portfolio and has been developed in collaboration with Translegal – Europe’s leading firm of lawyer-linguists. The ILEC is based on realistic tasks of the kind legal practitioners would be expected to encounter in their daily working lives. Successful candidates are able to use the language in practical situations, participate in meetings and discussions of a legal nature and express opinions clearly, and are able to understand and to produce texts of various types, including letters and memoranda. Studying for the ILEC will help learners to improve their language skills and to use them in a wide range of legal contexts. Examinations are delivered through Cambridge ESOL's network of authorised examination centres throughout Europe and beyond.

Who is the certificate for? The ILEC is for law students and practising lawyers who are seeking employment in an international legal setting. It includes practising lawyers who are: • seeking new employment in an international commercial law context; • seeking promotion within their own organisation; • learning English as part of a training programme. It includes law students who are: • seeking employment in an international commercial law context, e.g. law firms, company legal departments and government agencies; • intending to study law where the course includes a significant English language content, either in their own country or abroad. Furthermore, it aids legal employers with the hiring and training of personnel, and law faculties and language schools with the selection, placement and graduation of their students.

Internationally recognised The ILEC is a Cambridge ESOL examination, produced and assessed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, in collaboration with Translegal, which are Europe’s leading firm of lawyerlinguists. The ILEC is recognised in Belgium and abroad by: • De Orde van Vlaamse Balies, “erkend voor 32 niet-juridische punten” • L’Ordre des Barreaux Francophones et Germanophones de Belgique, with “un point de formation permanente par heure de formation” • The European Law Students’ Association • The European Company Lawyers Association • The European Young Bar Association • The International Association of Young Lawyers
