Automatic Transmission Fluids  Transmission Fluids

As complex as transmissions have become, transmission fluid selection and technologies have become equally complex. There is such a diversity of transmissions, such as dual clutch, CVT, 6, 7 and 8 speed systems. Gone are the days of one stop ATF fluid shopping, the ATF market has specialized, what works for one system is detrimental to others. We have seen the introduction of higher end Group III formulations, polyalphaolefins, high viscosity, low viscosity, economy Dexron and Mercon fluids leaving end users confused over which fluid to recommend for specific applications.

Below are some options and applications for most current market supply options: 1. DEXRON® VI (Licensed DEXRON® VI full synthetic ATF GM Approval #J-60158, product code 80565-630) - a low viscosity full synthetic automatic transmission fluid.  This specification was introduced by General Motors for 2006 model year vehicles, replacing the older DEXRON® III and previous categories. DEXRON® VI was a significant upgrade moving the base oil to full synthetic quality levels. Previous ATF D/M (DEXRON® III/Mercon) general fluids are still available for older GM vehicles, but are not licensed or subject to manufacturer review. Fluids are typically referenced back to the original DEXRON® III/Mercon approved fluid quality levels pre-2006 vehicles. DEXRON® VI is also backwards compatible to the following specifications:

DEXRON® III (H), DEXRON® III, DEXRON® IIE, Hyundai SP-IV, Toyota WS, Mercedes 7 speed and Nissan Matic S transmission fluids.   2. ATF D/M (CAM2 D/M ATF product code 80565-309) Suitable for use in all vehicles that recommend DEXRON® III (H), DEXRON® III/IIE, Type A Suffix A and MERCON® performance levels. Meets performance requirements of Allison transmission division C-4 and major hydraulic manufacturers' requirements for anti-wear hydraulic fluids. These ATF fluids are no longer licensed by General Motors and have been replaced by DEXRON® VI ATF.   3. High Viscosity Multi-Vehicle ATF (CAM2 Multi-Vehicle Full Syn High Visc ATF, product code 80565-389 & CAM2 Multi-Vehicle Syn Blend High Visc ATF, product code 80565356) -   Specially formulated to meet the needs of numerous transmissions where a High Viscosity ATF is specified; >6.8 cSt @ 100C. High viscosity multi-vehicle fluid is suitable for use in imports such as Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, BMW, Mercedes, Mitsubishi & Nissan and in domestic vehicles such as Ford, GM & Chrysler; or in vehicles that previously called for DEXRON® II/MERCON®, MERCON® V, & ATF+3®/+4 fluids. These fluids are "not" recommended for use in the following transmission and fluid types: CVT, DVT, 6 speed, Dexron VI, Mercon LV, Mercon SP or Toyota SW. 4. Low Viscosity Multi-Vehicle ATF (CAM2 Full Syn low viscosity Multi-Vehicle ATF, product code 80565-298) Specially formulated to meet the needs of numerous transmissions where a Low Viscosity ATF is Specified: < 6.4 cSt @ 100. Low viscosity multi-vehicle fluid is suitable for use in DEXRON® III (H), DEXRON® III, DEXRON® IIE, Hyundai SP-IV, Toyota WS, Mercedes , 7 speed, and Nissan Matic S transmission fluids. 5. MERCON® LV -formulated by Ford Motor as a "fill for life" fluid for post 2008 factory fill, for use in Ford, Mercury and Lincoln vehicles requiring MERCON®LV. This fluid is a low viscosity premium product. Not recommended for use in applications where MERCON® V, CVT or Type F Automatic Transmission Fluids are referenced. These fluids are not currently readily available beyond Ford.CAM2 is planning on releasing a viable fluid in the near future to cover this specification.     6. MERCON® SP is a premium-quality fluid designed, engineered and recommended by Ford Motor Company specifically for use in Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles that require MERCON® SP type fluid. This is the transmission fluid used in select 2005 thru 2008 Ford vehicles equipped with the 6HP26 and 6R60/6R75 transmissions. MERCON® LV is approved for use in some Ford transmissions formally recommending MERCON® SP. CAM2 is planning on releasing a viable fluid in the near future to cover this specification. 7. CVT ( CAM2 CVT, product code 80565-300) - Full Synthetic transmission fluid specifically designed for use in North American Vehicles equipped with either chain or push belt CVT applications.
