Preface

F

rom September 15th to 17th , 2015, Québec City hosted the 5th International Scientific Conference on Hardwood Processing (ISCHP 2015) and the International Academy of Wood Science (IAWS) Annual Meeting. The conference is part of the continuing series of conferences previously held in Canada (2007), France (2009), USA (2011) and Italy (2013). The main objective of this conference was to bring together the scientific and research communities working on hardwood, from the forest to the end-user, to share knowledge and ideas. International experts, scientists, government employees, hardwood industry representatives, suppliers and customers were invited to discuss recent progress and innovative work in this valuable area. It is essential to emphasize the disciplinary and cultural diversity of participants, who came from 15 different countries to contribute to the advancement of knowledge on hardwood processing. The ISCHP 2015 Organizing and Scientific Committees would also like to thank and congratulate the participants for the great quality of the presentations. It was obvious during the conference that our scientific community is diverse and dynamic, but the importance of the challenges we are facing imply that we must continue to reinforce our collaborations and develop innovative research programs around the topic of hardwood processing. For instance, the importance of biorefining and bioenergy work has increased in this latest edition of the conference. As the organizers have already indicated that it will be one of the main research topics of the next edition, this will probably remain a trend in Finland. We hope to meet you again in 2017! Topics covered by ISCHP 2015 Hardwood Forestry and Quality Hardwood Processing and Optimization Hardwood Product Development and Performance Hardwood Market and Sustainability Hardwood Properties

T

he organization of this 5th edition of ISCHP conference could not have been done without the support of many individuals and organizations. I would like to thank everyone for their support to make this conference possible. Thanks also goes to the Organizing Committee for all their work in preparation for this conference. The Scientific Committee contribution was critical to review and assuring the quality of the paper manuscript. The Editorial Committee has done a great job managing all peer review processes and assuring the scientific quality of the papers presented. We would also like to thank FPInnovations and Laval University, as well as Cnr-Ivalsa, FCBA, LUKE and Virginia Tech who supported this conference. We also thank IAWS for joining us and for their contribution and help with this conference. Organizing a conference needs some external financial supports, so many thanks to the Government and the industry for their sponsorships. Also, thanks to Preverco and “Simard Cuisine et Salle de bains” who opened the door of their facilities for the technical visits. Finally, special thanks go to Natalie Noël, Carole Flouret, Pierre Blanchet, Alexis Achim and Julie Ferland, as well as the Communications group of FPInnovations for their technical work.
