thermal or violet CTP plates? Why continue to use a system with expensive laser replacement costs? Cron UV-CTP is a fast, high quality and robust CTP.
NEWS December 2013 No 21 As we come to 2014, and the fact that this marks the centenary of the start of the Great War in 1914, we thought we’d look back at what our forebears were saying in the 1914 edition of Penrose’s Pictorial Annual. In fact that Annual contained no hint that such a conflict was going to engulf the World. Yet there will have been many signs that Europe was on the brink of disaster. Probably, people in their ordinary lives just hoped that things would just get better—not so very different from today. The Penrose Annual was founded in 1895 and edited by William Gamble, one of the founders of this Company in 1893, until his death in 1933. He was a remarkably farsighted man who wrote and spoke about developments and the future of graphic reproduction. Usually, his pronouncements, viewed from our standpoint a century later, have proved amazingly accurate. However, at the close of 1913, he wrote regarding offset printing;

Is your old CTP costing you too much? Why waste money on expensive thermal or violet CTP plates? Why continue to use a system with expensive laser replacement costs? Cron UV-CTP is a fast, high quality and robust CTP system delivered and installed by Hunter Penrose. With adjustable resolutions from 1200 to 3000dpi, it will hold 1% and 99% screens at 300Lpi on Artemis UV-P plates, within just 14 minutes from digital input to clean offset printing. With 2000 systems installed (17 in Africa), Cron is the leading UVCTP manufacturer today. A wide range of sizes is offered from GTO up to Very Large Format (VLF). All come with a choice of 16, 32, 48, 64 or 96 lasers, depending

Specimens we have seen of the best off-set work from America show that, although very pretty and soft effects are being obtained, there is still wanting the crispness and fullness of the letterpress half-tone. We feel, after seeing this work, that we must renew the opinion that offset can never displace the half-tone block for many purposes. Well, it goes to show that you can never be right all the time. Let’s just hope that our World Leaders can get it right in 2014 in a way which their forebears in 1914 got it so spectacularly wrong. Hopefully, economic prospects in many parts of the World are improving, after some years of difficult conditions in Europe. Most encouragingly, many of the leading countries in Africa are seeing quite substantial growths in GDP and this is aiding their increased investment in infrastructure project and capital spending for industry. We’re very grateful for the continued support from our customers in 2013. We hope to continue to play our part in developments in the Printing Industry.

on the required output speed. We guarantee these lasers for 200,000 plates. When any diode eventually fails, the system gives the same image quality with the remaining ones. Single lasers can be replaced – you never replace a whole laser head And Hunter Penrose Artemis UV-P (similar to conventional positive PS plates) cost 25% - 35% less than thermal or violet plates! For high volume output, the multi-cassette autoloader stores up to 500 plates in three different sizes. The in-line plate processor is fitted with digital conductivity monitoring, capable of reducing developer consumption. Cron CTP is compatible with all known RIPs. We supply the excellent Torrent basic and workflow RIPs, as well as specialist applications such as Dynastrip automatic imposition and page pairing for book, newspaper and magazine formats.

Our Cron systems are guaranteed for two years.

A Blanket for All Seasons Commercial sheet-fed, coldset or heatset web, continuous forms, carton printing, metal printing, UV inks and coatings – Hunter Penrose has blankets for all these applications. Let us know what blankets you have tried on your press and which types work well for you; there will be a blanket in our range to suit. Hunter Penrose has technical drawings of blankets for most offset presses, and for some unusual ones as well. We keep records of all our customers’ blanket sizes. When first ordering, please give us the name of the press and the size of the blanket, and whether it has metal bars. If your press manual has a drawing of the blanket, send us a copy. Commercial sheet fed Glossy magazines, brochures, company reports etc must be printed with the sharpest possible dots and with controllable dot gain. The blanket’s surface rubber should be formulated with these requirements in mind, for efficient ink-transfer with low ink and water settings. The blanket’s compressibility should allow for precise dot reproduction without thickness variation and without excess pressure.

mandrel presses we supply special UV self-adhesive blankets in various thicknesses. Mounting the blanket While tensioning a new blanket, just apply 75 % of the recommended torque value (preferably using a torque wrench). After a short press run (300 - 500 cylinder revolutions), retension with the full recommended torque value. A common cause of blanket failure is over-tensioning. Underpacking For web offset applications hard (polyester) and underlays are recommended. Avoid underlays with a rough surface, but a fine matt surface can prevent slippage of the blankets on the underlays. Self-adhesive underlays are better if you are using a reliable and consistent type of blanket. Foe sheet fed, hard calibrated manila mounting materials (Type S paper) is recommended in case of high expectations regarding print quality (dot gain). Soft mounting materials (under-blankets) are appropriate for good coverage of uneven stocks, for better mechanical resistance to excess pressure (smash/wrap resistance, ink piling, web change etc.) and for care of older printing machines. For cylinders with bearer rings, the total pressure should be calculated to 0.05 – 0.10mm over bearer height. Type S underlays are available in a wide range of thicknesses.

Coldset web For newspaper and book printing, the blanket must be strong enough to run at high speed, and to control the travel of the paper web through the press. Some web presses run best with so-called positive feed (blankets tend to push the web forwards), others respond better with neutral or negative feed blankets. The blanket must resist paper dust and be shock-resistant, especially for an older press. Heatset web A heatset blanket should combine the precision of commercial sheet fed with the strength and dynamic properties of a web blanket.

The heatset web blanket must fulfil all the quality demands of commercial sheet fed with the strength to run at high speeds.

UV printing UV inks and UV blanket wash can easily damage blankets (and rollers) if the rubber is not suitable. There are special UV blankets, and also a dual-purpose type which will print with conventional inks and most UV inks. Coating Coating blankets are available for water-based and UV coating. The surface may be easily cut and peeled to make shapes. Continuous forms and labels Narrow-width offset and hybrid offset/flexo presses often need a blanket with special low-profile metal bars for a narrow cylinder gap, or else a self-adhesive blanket. We supply both – and for conventional or UV inks. Metal decorating Printing on flat tinplate with presses such as the Crabtree or Mailander demands a blanket with not only supreme strength and smash-resistance, but today ever higher quality dot reproduction for the fine screens used in 4colour metal packaging. For 2-piece can printing on

Reliability and strength are needed to survive the tough conditions of newspaper printing.

Blast from the past It’s got to be more than 50 years since the last woodenbodied Hunter Penrose process cameras were made. Yet at least once a month we are contacted by someone from round the world who has just found one or just bought one. We guess that between 1893 and about 1960, thousands were sold all round the world. It’s nice to know they’ve lasted.
