The last few months have been exciting at GPA. Many magnificent greyhounds have stopped by the kennel on their way to their forever homes. Our annual picnic was a huge success. The Palm Beach Kennel Club and GPA chairpersons Jean Marks and Elaine Ebner worked diligently to make it such a success. Thanks to Theresa Hume and Karen Bradley and their staff from the Kennel Club. We can always count on them to go the extra mile for GPA. The Delray Affair was a greyt event again this year. Many thanks to Carol DiSimone and David Kurzman, who chaired the event, and all the volunteers who helped to make it such a success. We now need volunteers for the Sheriff's Department Summer Camp visits. The dates and locations are on the web site. Please visit and let me know if and when you can help. We are so grateful to all of you who support our efforts, whether by doing kennel work, manning meet-&-greets, maintaining our facility, or doing the daily administrative duties that keep the organization going. We appreciate every single one of you. Thank you all!

Mary Jo (“Mom” is what I really like to call her) bought me all sorts of new toys and I love playing with them. When I'm through playing with my toys, I put them all back in my "CONDO." All these toys just for me and a condo, too! Can you believe it? My favorite toy, however, is a plastic basin. I love running around the yard with it. As you can see my dad cut the bottom out so I can see where I'm going. Thank you, Dad! No more bruised nose. I've also made some new friends. My new bestest friend is Fluffy, a 7-year- old llaso apso, who lives next door. Fluffy is short! We walk together every night for about 30 minutes. He is teaching me to be a "normal" dog. For example, he has taught me that I should stop and smell every leaf and blade of grass. Our moms really appreciate these little rest periods in our walks-- that's what Fluffy told me, anyway. Another reason Fluffy is my best friend is that his mom seems to be a never-ending source of treats that are tasty and good for my teeth. I visit Fluffy a lot.

RUNWAY PROJECT: Mazie, the (I dream of) Genie, owned by Elizabeth Paquette, won "Most Regal" in the large-dog category at the Worth Avenue Association's Twelfth Annual Pet Parade and Contest, "Dress to Impress," held Saturday, March 11, 2006, in the Gucci Courtyard.

I already have a girlfriend. Can you believe it? She is a beautiful year-old cocker spaniel named Zeta. She comes to visit me every weekend and we have wonderful times running and playing. I remind her to watch out for the pool-- I don't want her to make the same mistake I did. I even share my toys with her, BUT ONLY ONE AT A TIME! After all they are MY toys. I'm truly enjoying retirement and am looking forward to many, many more years of relaxation. I really love my new family.

Congratulations Mazie, you look "Mahhhvelous!"

L

iving the life of Rodney

by Mary Jo Daurio

The good life started for me on February 4, 2006. I was adopted by a wonderful family. I now have a new dad, mom and grandma, George, Mary Jo and Julia Daurio, and live in a big house with a big backyard in lovely Deerfield Beach. Soon after my arrival to my new home I learned that the patio is not painted blue, it's a POOL! I did not find this out until I was surrounded by water. Why would my new parent put a pool in what I thought was my play area? Screened in, no bugs-- I'd have it made if I didn't have to walk around that pool. However, I learned something else that day: my new dad is GREAT. He jumped right in to rescue me. Immediately, I felt wanted and safe. What more could a dog ask for? After shaking off my unfortunate pool incident, and when they didn't ask me to leave, I continued to explore every inch of my new home. After about 2 hours, I found a soft place to lie down. I was a little tired after all that. Things are GREAT in my new family. They take very good care of me, but I did have to learn to obey some house rules. Rule #1: all the food in the kitchen is Off Limits! No sampling allowed! Now, I'm not crazy about this rule but it does make my family happy, so I've learned to just lie down at the kitchen entrance and behave myself. Rule # 2: all food in my bowl is mine, no one is going to take it, so I can take my time eating! This is a good rule, much better than Rule #1.

Your Greyhound’s Health GPA FL/SE will feature a different article from “Greyt Health” by Suzanne Stack, DVM in each issue of The Needlenose News. These articles are taken from Dr. Stack’s web site, WWW.GREYTHEALTH.COM Blood values considered normal for greyhounds may differ from those considered normal for other breeds. What do the results of your hound's annual blood test mean? Are they outside the "normal range?" THE BASIC PROFILE: - another measure of kidney function less affected by dehydraWhen that "basic profile" comes back from the lab, tion than BUN what can it tell you? The highlights in greyhounds are: - normally higher in greyhounds than other dogs The CBC The CBC (complete blood count) tells how many of each kind of blood cell is circulating. RBCs (red blood cells) contribute to the HCT or PCV (hematocrit or packed cell volume = the concentration of red blood cells in the sample). Hgb is the amount of hemoglobin in the RBCs. These numbers are normally high in greyhounds, low in anemia. MCV, MCH, and MCHC are calculations derived from RBC, PCV, and Hgb. The WBC (white blood cell) count is a total of the different kinds of WBCs in the sample - segmented neutrophils, bands, lymphocytes, monocytes, and eosinophils. The breakdown of WBCs is called the differential (diff) and by its makeup can indicate a normal dog or possible infection/inflammation. The "diff" gives the doctor clues to what process or disease might be causing an abnormal WBC. WBCs can normally run low in greyhounds. Platelets are the last component of the CBC. Platelets are the blood cells that form a "platelet plug" to stop the bleeding when you cut your finger. Greyhounds can run under or on the low end of normal platelet counts.

- alanine transferase - released from damaged liver cells - aspartate transferase - increased in liver damage, muscle damage (including intramuscular injections), or hemolysis (breakdown of RBCs). The hemolysis can be as simple as from a difficult blood draw. - serum alkaline phosphatase - increased with liver disease, Cushings, steroids, some cancers & infections. Normally high in young, growing dogs. - total bilirubin - pigment increased in liver disease or hemolysis which causes dog, serum, and/or urine to turn yellow (jaundice = icterus) - creatine phosphokinase - enzyme released from damaged skeletal & heart muscle

- digestive enzyme increased in pancreatitis, intestinal disease, or kidney failure

- digestive enzyme which is more specific for pancreatitis The lab uses serum (what is left of whole blood once the cells are removed) to determine approximately 20 "blood chemistries." There are many other tests that can be run on serum. Most "chem panels" include:

- rises after eating or from pancreatitis, diabetes, hypothyroidism, or glomerulonephritis. - doesn't clog arteries in dogs.

Total Protein = the sum total of Albumin + Globulin "blood sugar" - rises in diabetes, pancreatitis, seizures, or severe near-death type stress - decreased in sepsis, insulinoma tumor, baby pups who don't eat often enough, but most often from sample sitting around too long before centrifuging

- a protein made in the liver - can be lost through damaged kidneys or intestines

- a protein produced in response to antigenic stimulation - increased in chronic infections and some cancers – blood urea nitrogen - increased in dehydration or kidney disease - decreased in liver disease - also increased in kidney disease Greyhound Pets of America, Florida-Southeast Coast

- increased in lymphoma & other cancers - decreased in kidney failure, post-whelping seizures, & hypoparathyroidism

- increased in kidney failure WWW.GREYHOUNDPETSFL.ORG

the Palm Beach Kennel Club, Theresa Hume, Karen Bradley and Jim (the grill master), worked tirelessly to make this, as they do at every event the Club is involved with, an event to remember. An event cannot be successful without its volunteers. This year Jean Marks and I co-chaired the picnic with LOTS of help. No one or two people can make an event successful. This one took many:

- chloride - potassium

Wally Griffin - transport supplies, set up and clean up Steve Booth - set up, clean up and raffle sales - sodium John Palmer - sign-in table Cathryn Vaughn - sign-in table Lastly are 4 calculations: Robin Vaughn - sign-in table John Ebner - signs - albumin/globulin ratio Benita Booth - balloons - albumin should predominate over globulin in the normal dog Penny Josephs - set up and clean up Barbara Masi - set up - BUN/creatinine ratio Rick Allen - clean up - helps distinguish dehydration from true kidney failure Marilyn Webber - sales-table chairperson Mace Tamse - sales - sodium/potassium ratio Betty Henderson - sales - screens for Addison's disease Pat Justin - sales Liette Dionne - sales = (Na + K) - (Cl + bicarbonate) Suzette Newcomer - sales - reflects acid/base status Tony Mangola - sales Tracy Elling -sales There are many other less important or more obscure possibili- Vicky Hudlin - raffle/silent auction ties for elevations and decreases in these parameters that were Lisa Rosenberg - photography omitted for space and clarity. Many values are only something Melody Tamse - 50/50 sales to worry about if they're either elevated or decreased, but not Phil Demeulenaere - photography necessarily both. These are the basics. Cynthia Demeulenaere - set up And all the folks who donated raffle and silent auction items.

2005 GREYHOUND PICNIC

by Elaine Ebner

The 2005 Annual Greyhound Picnic was held Sunday April 2, 2006, delayed by Hurricane Wilma. Even though technical difficulties forced us to change the location just 5 days earlier, the picnic was a resounding success! On a beautiful day, at a fabulous location, with our marvelous greys, what more could we want? Delicious foods and drinks? As always,

We all had a great time and are looking forward to our 2006 Annual Picnic (Fall). We hope the weather will cooperate so we can return to our cooler-weather schedule.

Check the events page of the GPA FL/SE website for details on ALL of our events! http://www.greyhoundpetsfl.org

by Rick Johnson Trapper Johnson Here is a photo of Trapper and his best friend, Sally. They have been together since Sally was a kitten. Sadly, Trapper passed away this past January. We had Trapper 9 years; he sure is missed around here. I have M.S. and am housebound and confined to a wheelchair. Trapper was more then a pet, he was a friend and he brightened my days.

We were his second family,. He was 6 when we got him; he was 15 when we lost him. He made us laugh every day.

companion as you work in your home office…big puppy eyes watching you blow-dry your hair…a retired racer taking retirement very serious…then comes the "down" side. On March 21, 2006, our 12-year-old female brindle "DUBIE" started to throw up blood…immediately she was taken to the vet…she was now bleeding from her behind…her final day had arrived. DUBIE, you were our first beautiful greyhound…we miss you very much…all our love to you in puppy heaven! Betty & Jack Burke (your puppy parents) Blossom Burke (your greyhound sister)

Trapper Johnson & his best friend, Sally, the cat by Louise Glover Ellie Mae Glover Ellie Mae passed away Sunday, March 12th. Her story sounds similar to Jewel's. She had several massive strokes and neurological problems. We had to put her to sleep. We had her 5 years. She was 12 years old. She had a long and wonderful life and joins our late Marley. They are now running together on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.

Dubie Burke by Stephanie Aebersold Memories of Hank (No Starch) Ellie Mae Glover Hank was a gorgeous black tuxedo boy who loved to play soccer every chance he got. To know him was to love him. Whenever I , DUBIE DALER - Pat C.O'Murrigan 12/01/93 - 03/21/06 by Betty Burke or anyone, was at the kennel to do a turnout, there was Hank Life is like a roller coaster…there are many "ups" and then the with his blankie or stuffie in his mouth, wagging his tail and just "downs." Being a parent of a greyhound sure is an "up" …the waiting for his turn to run in the pen and push around his big needlenose in your face each morning reminding you a new day is soccer ball. beginning…the amusement of watching a greyhound running in I first met Hank in 1996, while visiting the GPA kennel, which figure-8 fashion in the backyard…a needlenose nestling in your was then located on Gulfstream Road, in Lake Worth. My initial neck sharing its unconditional love…a puppy toy being presented impression of him was that he didn't exactly look like a greyto you as you return home from work each day…a puppy walk in hound. You see, Hank was one of those greys who had a somethe neighborhood…a puppy ride in the back of the van…a puppy what squarish head and a not-so-needlenose. He was three years vacation with the family…a puppy hug… a computer old and when we moved to our new facility on con’t pg. 11

Belvedere Road in December of 2000, and I began to volunteer on a weekly basis, our love for each other grew. In 2002, Carleton and Eda Holt and their sons Richard and Hayden had lost their greyhound Baron, but still had another greyhound, Eagle, and Brandy, a Husky mix, when they adopted Speedy from our kennel. They knew when they took Speedy home that Hank would soon follow and indeed he did, two weeks later. It was a new- found freedom for Hank to live in a home with a huge fenced yard and a swimming pool, which he soon learned was a constant source of water for drinking and for cooling after all those soccer matches. He and Brandy became fast friends playing tug of war and smooching with each other. Hank got to take vacations in the Holt's motor home. He loved long walks in the neighborhood and even got along with the two cats also residing at his new home. I was totally blessed to be able to visit that happy boy on several occasions. It was hard to believe he was a senior hound. He was still playing ball as hard and fast as he always did and he always greeted me with wonderful chin nibbles, kisses and a helicopter tail. In 2005, Eda found a lump in his tongue. It was removed and found to be malignant melanoma. A few months later it grew back larger than before and Hank had surgery a second time. All during his recovery, he was still a happy, ball-playing boy. He and Brandy romped in the yard just a few days before that menacing tumor finally began to get the best of him. He could no longer push around his soccer ball or eat. On March 4th, a few days after his 13th birthday, Eda, Carlton, Richard and Hayden, Brandy, Speedy, Tex and the kitties all lovingly helped him to the Rainbow Bridge. Hank will be missed by all of us who knew him. There is no doubt in my mind that he is now playing ball and running with Baron, Eagle, Sport, Chloe and all the other racers we have loved and lost.

Polo Zap

by Abbey & Gary Zap

It is with greyt sadness that I tell you that Pat C Payola, aka Polo Zap, went to join his beloved Timber at the Rainbow Bridge. Polo was our first greyhound; he introduced us to this wonderful breed. He taught us how independent (read: stubborn) a dog can be. He was protective without barking, he was loving without kissing, he was needy of ear scritches, playful with his big, crocodile jaws clapping away, demanding of his meals and devoted beyond description. He loved all meats, raw or cooked, fish, fruit and bagels. Gary and I will miss him deeply, as he enriched our lives more than I can say. When he and Tomcat were younger, Tommy use to nip on Polo's toes or tail and Polo would swing his big head around and bark a warning; but he never tried to connect. He and Timber (our mix who died in July '03) were such a bonded couple. Polo mourned her so hard, Jesse graced our home just two weeks later. We weren't ready, but Polo was. You long-term list members have read many "Polo escapades," but my favorite was the time he went for our friend Paul. Paul was agitated and talking with his hands, walking toward me. Polo flew/leapt at Paul and I grabbed him en route, and said, "Paul is our friend, Polo,”. Then he just stared at Paul. It took years before he could greet Paul without growling. My big, parti-colored, wonderful boy is now gone from our home, but never from our hearts. Now the cycle begins again. I know that in time our hearts will open to another, but right now all we feel is pain
