Presidential Perspective One of our new members informed me she was not receiving any of our mass emails. We worked on fixing the problem and found that I could send her a regular email, but when I sent a mass email, she didn’t receive it. I guess her email program has a BS filter (Blatant Spam). She has a Mac and I am Mac challenged, so I could not help her. She’s working on it from her end now. It did make me wonder if anyone else is in the same boat. I normally sent out 2 or 3 mass emails a month. All emails are Jaguar related, usually reminders of upcoming events and that sort of thing. No jokes or junk. If you are not receiving them, you might want to look into the reason why. You might miss out on something fun…. During our first Board meeting this year, we discussed a complaint from one of our members regarding our raffles. He felt they ran too long. We agreed that they can sometimes run a little long, so we decided to limit the number of raffle items to 8-10, and maybe quicken up the drawing procedure a bit. We tried this at the Boathouse brunch (article on page 8). It worked so well that at the beginning of the raffle I stepped out of the room for a minute, and when I came back, it was over! Extreme Raffle! Maybe we took it a bit too far. I enjoy watching members come up one at a time and choose the item they want. It gives us all a chance to get to know one another better and have a little fun. Well, it’s something we’re still working on. I will tell you this: some of the raffle items Diane has been selecting lately have been pretty nice! She tells me the reason is, more people have been buying raffle tickets lately, which provides her with more funds to purchase nicer gifts. The circle of life…. We had a great brunch at the Boathouse last January. Lots of people showed up. So many, in fact, that they reserved the whole restaurant for us that morning. Ta Ta, see you at the Joe’s Crab Shack! (Don’t go to the wrong one, you will be very lonely.)

Tom Wright’s 2006 X-Type

S H O W C A S E

M E M B E R

This is Tom Wright’s new 2006 X-Type. He writes: For years I had a collector car or two and mostly rode my Harley on a daily basis. This led, for example, to shopping at Vons at 8:00 AM Sunday morning so there would be plenty of parking for my Rolls-Royce. But then my “family” grew from one to two when I adopted Lily, my greyhound, and I started driving nearly everywhere so she could ride along. Struggling to keep mobile in these older cars was a continuing problem that was wearing me down, so I decided I needed a car from this millennium. continued on page 15

Brunch at the Boathouse

2013

Article by Stick Holmes

began well for the San Diego Jaguar Club. A better than expected turnout of 44 members showed up for a delicious brunch at the Boathouse restaurant located on Harbor Island. The weather was brisk and clear. The parking lot was filled with shiny Jaguars. It was all good. The entire restaurant was reserved exclusively for our Club. We even had our own menu with our logo on it.

We had our usual social hour, then began dining. The staff was extremely attentive and the food was delicious. After, we held a quick business meeting where our newer members were introduced, upcoming events were announced, and logo items were discussed.

The Club is always welcome at the Boathouse

As an added attraction, a large crane perched itself on a limb just outside the side window and remained there for the entire event. During the social hour, 2 dolphins were seen playing amongst the boats in the marina and, towards the end, a seal showed up in the same area and entertained us with his antics. Several Jaguars were spotted. (Get it.....spotted) Vic Chang and Diane McDonald

Member’s Showcase (continued from page 6) On the internet I found a list of reliable cars. Of course it started with a number of boring models, but then to my amazement I found the Jaguar X-Type right there with the Corollas, Accords and such! I did further research and found that this car was “27%” the same as a Ford Torus. Was it design hours? Number of parts? The weight of the parts? Who knew. But I instantly fell in love with the look of the car—the headlight “tubes” on the hood, the leaper—and the smaller size of the car, since I live in South Mission on a narrow alley with a skinny tandem garage. I did a posting to a Jaguar web forum asking about the model’s reliability. One respondent said that among his wife, his son and himself they had owned five X-Types and he listed the grand total of three trivial things that had gone wrong. Another claimed there were some in the ’02-’05 range that had experienced a rare but expensive problem with corrosion related to a sub-frame, so rather than doing a lot of checking on this I merely limited myself to 2006 and later X-Types. I ended up buying the car from a dealer in Costa Mesa. It has low miles and is virtually immaculate. The price was right too. Prior to this car, the most recent car I had ever bought was a 1978 Mercedes, so it’s been an education owning a 21st century car. I feel so out of it to be surprised when the lights and wipers turned themselves on when needed. The car handles very well with its all-wheel drive and cruising at 65 MPH the engine is loafing along at 2200 RPM. You get a lot of car for not too much money with an X-Type! So now I have a daily driver X-Type to go with my E-Type, Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud and classic Mini, but strangely I still feel funny about going food shopping at any time other than 8:00 AM Sundays.

Jaguar's Concept Speedboat Jaguar's design director, Ian Callum, has created a Concept Speedboat to support the launch of the new XF Sportbrake. Jaguar has created the ultimate accessory to go with its new XF Sportbrake - a speedboat penned by Ian Callum, the company's design director. Speaking about the Concept Speedboat, Callum said: "We recognise that both our existing and future customers enjoy diverse and active lifestyles. With the launch of the new Jaguar XF Sportbrake, we had an opportunity to create a vision of how our design philosophy might be applied to an alternative product, in which speed and beauty are also priorities.

"The Concept Speedboat looks powerful. It follows, in so many ways, the idea of a traditional speedboat but with the sleek and fast characteristics that you would expect from a Jaguar Car." The boat features natural teak decking on a gel coat fibre-glass hull. The carbon-fibre fin is "inspired by the iconic Jaguar D-type", and the fuel filler caps by the Series 1 XJ. Inside the Concept Speedboat, which measures 6.1m long, is a 2+1 seating layout. As the name suggests, the Jaguar speedboat is a concept only; Jaguar states that it is a design project commissioned to support the launch of the XF Sportbrake. (Article from The Telegraph)

By Paul Novak, Chief Judge, San Diego Jaguar Club This article provides information about the Jaguar Clubs of North America (JCNA) Concours d’Elegance to help you understand this interesting aspect of Jaguar ownership. If you currently participate in concours, I hope this will help you enjoy it more. If you have never participated, I hope this will encourage you to join in the fun and competition. Each JCNA sanctioned Concours d’Elegance provides for Entries in Champion Division, Driven Division and Special Division. Champion Division is the most demanding since it challenges its Entrants to research, prepare, and present their Jaguars in their original, authentic, and factory-delivered configuration and condition. All Champion Division Entries will have their interiors, exteriors, engine compartments, and trunks (boots) judged for authenticity, condition, and cleanliness. Tools and manuals are also judged. Driven Division similarly challenges the Entrant, however the Entries do not have their engine compartment or trunk (boot) judged and certain convenience and safety related authenticity exceptions are allowed. The exteriors and interiors of Driven Division Entries are judged to the same standard as Champion Division Entries. Tools and manuals are not judged. Special Division is intended for factory and non-factory prepared race cars and limited production Jaguars, production Jaguars privately prepared for racing, modified production Jaguars and Jaguar powered vehicles with replica Jaguar bodies. Special Division cars are judged only for condition and cleanliness. As you can see, concours participation includes pretty much all Jaguars except for those that have been modified with a non-Jaguar engine. Entries in Champion, Driven and Special Division compete for scores and awards at the local, Regional and North American level with scores tracked and reported by JCNA on their website. The JCNA Concours Rule Book can be downloaded for free from: www.jcna.com

Wiring Diagrams Available My name is Tom Jenkins I live western Sydney Australia, I own an xj 6L S2 (1975 4 door), my back ground is mechanics and now computer services for the past 12 years. Out of decades of frustration working with "hard to read" wiring schematics I decided to make a project to convert as many if not all (eventually) of the jaguar schematics with requests such as Triumph TR series, the schematics I have produced as you’ll see by the sample are fully colour coded, all files are pdf with hyperlink interaction, all files come with item index, item # ,grid reference, chassis model #’s relating to the specific diagram & some models include chassis location for wiring, relays etc. I also endeavor to convert to other languages on request. I would like to offer your members & associates access to this information, I initially offer these schematics for free with a request of a voluntary donation to the value the user believes it’s worth to them, any donations received will automatically receive any updates to files, an E book version suitable for 10 “ readers & an invitation to add a picture or 2, web link information to sites they like to suggest all listed on a dedicated site> http://members.optusnet.com.au/~tomj1711/index.html . Donations are used to help purchase those hard to get quality diagrams from around the globe, many donors are from many countries from the U.K. – France – U.S.A – Germany – Denmark – Australia – N.Z to name a few. I have found by offering the choice of voluntary donation that the Jag community which I’m a member of are more than willing to be a part of something that’s an exclusive offer as I do not make this offer anywhere else other than to Jaguar clubs & forums. JAGUAR CLUBS OF NORTH AMERICA 2012 CONCOURS AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED!

2012 was a great year for the San Diego Jaguar Club. Along with all the extraordinary events we held, several of our members did quite well in the JCNA sanctioned Concours competitions. Eight SDJC members placed within the top 3 in the North American Standings and three more placed in Regional. There’s a chart on the next page listing our members and their awards.

Ken Smith’s 1961 XK150 DHC

In order to qualify to win a North American award, you must enter your Jag in at least three competitions in the same class in the same year at any JCNA sanctioned event. North America includes the US, Canada and Mexico. Regional winners are required to compete in at least two competitions in their region in a year. Our Southwest Region includes California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado. Scoring is accomplished as follows: Champion Division scores are based on 100 being a perfect Jaguar, just like it came out of the factory. Driven Division scores are based on 10 points being perfect with some slight modifications to the car being allowed understanding they may be driven to work daily. Champion Division and Driven Division are judged to the same standards except that in Driven Division the engine, trunk, tools, and manuals are not judged. We had one Jag, an E-Type in Preservation Class (19A). Preservation Class is a class within the Champion Division. In this case, the car must be unrestored or near original, over 20 years old, well prepared, and in good to excellent condition.

San Diego Jaguar Club Board of Directors Minutes January 9, 2013 The meeting was called to order at San Diego European Motorcars at 6:30 pm by the President, Stick Holmes. The following board members were present: George Klein, Nedra Rummell, Grant Rummell, Jay Stamets, Craig McLaughlin, and Dannie McLaughlin. Also present were Dan Jensen and Rex Ryan, Functional Chairs; and Vic Chang, Director Emeritus. Also attending were Rhonda Migliaccio and Tom Peake from the organizing committee for the La Jolla Concours/La Jolla Motorcar Classic to be held on April 7. Rhonda described the event and how it is continuing to grow in both size and prestige; John detailed the need for volunteers. Stick offered to send a mass e-mail to Club members regarding registering for the show and how to volunteer. Secretary’s Report. The minutes of the November meeting were unanimously approved via e-mail by the Board members prior to the meeting. Treasurer’s Report. The Treasurer’s report shows the Club effectively broke even in 2012. After substantially subsidizing the holiday party, the club still has a healthy cash reserve in the bank. With such healthy reserves, Dan, Craig and Rex suggested the Club continue to underwrite occasional Club events. Dan reported that all letters to newsletter advertisers have been sent out and advertisers have a deadline of February 1 in which to pay for their ads. Dan reported he has already received one payment. First Vice President’s Activities Report. Events Review: The election luncheon and the holiday dinner dance were both deemed a success with good food and good fun. The grand opening of Jaguar San Diego at San Diego European Motorcars was described by those in attendance as spectacular with an impressive F-Type display. Events Preview: 1/12 – brunch is scheduled at the Boathouse; 2/16 – planning for lunch at Joe’s Crab Shack is well in hand and the Board decided on a cost of $26 per head; 2/23 Surf and Turf with JOC LA; 3/9 Club drive to Mike’s BBQ; 4/5 – new members night will again be held at Lake San Marcos Country Club; 4/21 – Rolling British Car Day; 5/11 – AutoWerks Tour with dinner afterward at Ginghams; and a drive – perhaps to Pechanga - sometime in June with Harvey Williamson to organize. As always, details will be available on the Club’s website and in the newsletter close to the date of each event. Craig requested that the La Jolla show on 4/7 be added to the Club’s calendar and Nedra mentioned that Tom Krefetz is willing to host a tech session before the Concours in July. Membership Report. The following individuals were presented to the board for membership: Ray Hemphill; Edward and Gail Hoffman; and Renee Konstantine. Upon a motion by Craig and seconded by Vic, these individuals were unanimously approved. Nedra reported that the Club currently has 192 members and that to date, 105 have renewed. The JCNA renewal deadline is 2/1 so Nedra will follow-up with members who have not yet renewed. In order to encourage timely renewals, the board discussed perhaps adding a $10 surcharge in the future to renewals that come in after the JCNA deadline. Nedra also said the roster is in the works and Dannie volunteered to help with proof reading. Finally Nedra shared a member’s comments about the raffle with the Board. After discussion the Board agreed to limit the number of raffle prizes to no more than 10 per event and to speed up the drawing. Newsletter Editor’s Report. Stick will continue as newsletter editor until a replacement is found. Functional Chair Reports. Craig, the Club’s BCCC representative displayed a beautiful trophy that will be used to encourage participation in all British car club events. The award will be given at the end of the year to the club whose member receives the most points based on participation and/or volunteerism during the year. Stick reported that the website has been updated. Old Business – 1) The new brochures are available and George and Nedra reported that they have been distributed to Jaguar San Diego, Mel’s Auto Repair, Jaguar Carlsbad, Original Specialists, and Coventry Motors. They will be delivered to Cavallo Motorcars and Classic Showcase in the near future; 2) Stick will follow up with the Kearneys regarding ordering logo items. Nedra pointed out that if we’re not going to reorder certain items, they should be taken off the order form in the newsletter. Stick will follow up regarding pricing for additional grill badges, and Dan will talk to Katherine Partain who has information regarding pricing on red polo shirts; 3) The Board will discuss British Car Day categories at the next meeting. New Business – 1) The Board entertained the feasibility of purchasing a new laptop, iPad and/or projector. After discussion it was agreed that because the Club only uses a computer a couple of times a year, borrowing one from a member is sufficient; however, the Club’s projector needs to be replaced and Grant will investigate the cost; 2) Stick reported that he appointed Rex Ryan as the Club’s dealership liaison to Jaguar San Diego; 3) Stick also reported that Pete Pickslay was appointed as the Club’s representative to the Car Club Council of Greater San Diego. By previous electronic vote, the Board approved the CCC membership fee; 4) the Board endorsed an earlier vote giving the Club’s AGM delegates, Dick Cavicke and Tom Krefetz $150 each to help offset the costs of the trip. As there was no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:45p.m. The next board meeting is scheduled for February 13, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. at Jaguar San Diego. Respectfully submitted by Dannie McLaughlin, Secretary February 2013
