January 2014

Happy New Year, everyone! (and welcome to the first all-electric edition!) Let’s start off as we mean to carry on by wishing all Quay Sailing Club’s members, their families and supporters a very Happy New Year - best wishes to you all for a healthy and prosperous 2014, and we hope we can get some sailing in this year!! About a third of the Club’s entire membership packed themselves into the bar to see in the New Year in grand style, with some left wondering how we did all that food and real champagne for just £4 a head! The answer is that we have a talented bunch of volunteers that run the Club for you and nothing pleases them more than you lot smiling and laughing and generally enjoying yourselves - which you did with great abandon on New Year’s Eve - some

ears are still ringing from those foil horn things that you all blew at midnight (and for several long minutes afterwards) to see out 2013 and welcome in ‘14. A great time was had by all and thanks to Tom for manning the music all evening and Joy for wielding the pots and pans and making sure everyone got fed! Vice Commodore John Barnes put in a double shift behind the bar and looked as fresh at the end as he did at the start - how did he do that? Thanks to all of you who braved the elements to party along into the wee small hours and if you missed out this time, why not try and get along to the next one? A lovely day for Brunch down the river - Boxing Day and a bunch of members sent off down the river in almost ideal conditions to the beach near Dandy Hole where they broke out the leftover turkey, mince pies and Christmas cake to enjoy a spot of brunch after a hard row / motor / paddle to get down there. It was great to see so many folks out on the water that day, if only for a short while due to the neap tide, and this has become an annual treat in the winter sailing programme. We either try to do this on Boxing Day or New Year’s Day (looking good for 2014) as it depends on the tides and we often end up in the bar. In fact one year recently we skipped the river bit due to the weather and had the picnic in the clubhouse! See - it always turns out OK and we always have fun! # WANTED # WANTED # WANTED #

Both the Club’s Treasurer and Membership Secretary are standing down this year and we wish them all the best in whatever they do next some sailing, maybe? Both jobs are very important to the Club (so important that the Mem Sec post will be upgraded to a Flag Officer post at the next AGM) so if there’s anyone out there with an aptitude for bookwork, is methodical, trustworthy and honest, please step forward and fill some big shoes - the Club can’t function without them - one collects the money, the other keeps tabs on it! They’ll both tell you they’ve enjoyed their time in office, but all good things come to an end. If you can step up, please let the Commodore know via the editor, the website’s ‘contact us’ link or the club post box.

T

hanks to QSC’s Moorings Officer, Chris Warren, for all his efforts during the recent high tides to keep your boats and equipment safe. Along with his helpers he got most of the floaters under control and even bringing one boat back to QSC from far flung shores! Watch out for a repeat of the springs between January 31st and February 2nd - they’re 5.8 and 5.9m so please make sure your kit and boats are safe and secure, so Chris doesn’t have to!

WE WAS BRUNG UP PROPER !! CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OUR FRIENDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's, & 70's Why? First, we survived being born to mothers who drank while they carried us & lived in houses made of asbestos. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, raw egg products, loads of bacon and processed meat, tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes. Our baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints and we had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets. When we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes, not to mention the risks we took hitchhiking……... As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags, drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle... Take away food was limited to fish and chips, no pizza shops, McDonalds , KFC, Subway or Nandos. All the shops closed at 6.00pm, didn't open on the weekends, yet somehow we didn't starve to death! We shared one soft drink bottle with four of our friends and NO ONE actually died from this. We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner shop and buy Gobstoppers, Bubble Gum and some bangers to blow up frogs with. We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soft drinks with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because......WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!! We could leave home in the morning & play all day as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. We would spend hours building our gocarts out of old prams and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built tree houses and dens and played in river beds with matchbox cars. No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K. We didn’t have Playstations, Nintendo Wii, X-boxes, 999 channels on SKY, no video or dvd, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms....WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them! We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones & teeth & there were no lawsuits from these accidents. Only girls had pierced ears! We ate mud pies made from dirt and worms and they didn’t live in us forever. You could only buy Easter Eggs & Hot Cross Buns at Easter... We were given air guns and catapults for our 10th birthdays, We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them! Mum didn't have to go to work to help dad make ends meet! The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the police! Our parents didn't invent stupid names for their kids like 'Kiora' and 'Blade' and 'Ridge' and 'Vanilla' We had freedom, failure, success & responsibility and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL ! And YOU are one of them! CONGRATULATIONS! You’ve had the luck to grow up as kids before the lawyers & the government regulated our lives for our own good. Didn’t do us any harm, did it? Have a great life!

Extract from the TECF January newsletter - MCZ News The Tamar Estuaries and Whitsand Bay are both amongst the first 27 Marine Conservation Zones to be designated by the Government. The designation is the culmination of many years work to have in place a coherent network of marine protected areas as set out in the Marine and Coastal Access Act of 2009. The Tamar Estuary MCZ consists of two spatially separate areas: The Tamar and Tavy Estuaries from a line just above the Tamar Bridge right up to the tidal limits, and also the Lynher Estuary from Jupiter Point also up to the tidal limits. Reference should be made to 'The Tamar Estuary Marine Conservation Zones Designation Order 2013' which came into force on 12 December 2013 and defines the area, the features and the conservation objectives and is available from here: https:// www.gov.uk/government/publications/marineconservation-zone-2013-designation-tamar-estuary The Whitsand and Looe Bay MCZ is an inshore site located off the south coast of Cornwall and runs from a point near Queener Point on Rame Head across to Hore Stone just west of Looe; the inland boundary is the mean high water mark. Reference should be made to 'The Whitsand and Looe Bay Marine Conservation Zone Designation Order 2013' which came into force on 12 December 2013 and defines the area, the features and the conservation objectives, available from here: https://www.gov.uk/ government/publications/marine-conservation-zone-2013 -designation-whitsand-and-looe-bay There’s loads more information to be found on the Tamar Estuaries Consultative Forum’s website - this info came via the PPSA and all QSC boaters should be aware of what’s involved in the MCZ’s closest to us.

Everything else

The RYA recently launched a new section of their website for affiliated clubs only. To access the range of resources you’ll need an ID and password - both available from the Club’s Hon Sec, the editor or a committee member. The PPSA are after more volunteers to help them, particularly at Regatta time. More details from Dave Moore, QSC’s rep on the PPSA, via the editor if you’d like to be involved.  This is the first all-electric edition of the QSC newsletter but we’ll still have a few printed copies in the clubhouse. Membership cards are a pain to print and laminate as well as an expense for the club. Over a third of members didn’t pick theirs up from the bar last year so from this renewal we’ll only supply one where you specifically ask for one.
