January First Grade Family Fun 2015 READING
Fluency: Books on Tape/CD are a great way to provide examples of reading with fluency for your child. While listening to the story, make sure your child has a copy of the book and is following along with the words. You may also want to record your child reading a favorite story and then have him/her compare listening to the book on tape to their recorded reading. Comprehension: Making Predictions: When children make predictions about what they are reading, they stay more involved with the story. A prediction is based on what the reader knows about the characters, where the story is taking place, and what has happened so far in the story. The questions: What do you think will happen next? or How do you think the story will end? encourage children to make inferences and predictions about what they have read. Nonbook Reading Activities: Put on a play: The play can be performed as part of a family celebration or a special event. You can help your child create the play based on a favorite book, movie, or story they wrote. Scripts can be printed out, costumes can be created, and lines can be memorized to make the play more special! WRITING Encourage your child to write about his/her ‘Winter Break’ special times with family or fun activities with friends. Remind your child that adding describing words will make their story fun to listen to or read. SPELLING ● Scrabble Tile Word Builder each player selects 10 tiles and places them face up. The first player makes a 2 letter word, the next player adds a letter to make a new word. Play continues until no more letters can be added. The last person to add a letter earns a point and then the game starts over. ● Practice spelling words in trays of sugar, salt, pudding, or shaving cream.
