JESUS OF NAZARETH CENTER FOR HOLY LANDS STUDIES SUMMER INSTITUTE Course Number/ Jesus of Nazareth Instructor: Mr. Marc Turnage COURSE SYLLABUS COURSE DESCRIPTION A study of Jesus’ life and teachings within their historical, cultural, and physical settings. Primary attention will be given to placing Jesus’ message within the context of first-century Judaism. OBJECTIVES 1. To place Jesus within historical-cultural matrix of first century Judaism 2. To understand Jesus’ sayings and teachings within linguistic-cultural settings of first century Judaism 3. To introduce students to archaeological data and its significance for understanding the life of Jesus 4. To develop a historical reading of Jesus within the historical, cultural, and linguistic settings of first century Judaism TEXTBOOKS David Flusser with R. Sources, Ancestry, and Birth 2. Law 3. Love and Ethics 4. Kingdom of Heaven 5. Son of Man 6. Jerusalem 7. Death METHODOLOGY The course will consist of readings in primary and secondary sources, classroom lectures and discussions, as well as a number of field studies and onsite learning in Israel. Prior to arrival in Israel: students will read and write a four-page, double-spaced book review on Dave Flusser’s, The Sage from Galilee. This review is due upon arrival in Israel. Students are expected to come to class having read the assigned readings and ready to participate in the classroom lectures and discussions. Students are expected to attend every class, field trip, and class related lecture during their time in Israel. Course Synthesis Paper (see Summer Institute Final Course Requirements)
