ROLE TITLE:

Newsletter Editor

RESPONSIBLE TO:

Branch Chair This is a voluntary position and does not carry a salary

ROLE OBJECTIVE Working with both the CIPD Manchester Branch Committee and Personnel and Development practitioners out in the field you will be responsible for sourcing members and individuals in the field to provide articles, comments and advertising for the bi-annual CIPD Manchester Branch Newsletter and communicating with them regarding appropriate deadlines. Working with a designer, printers and mailing houses; you will be responsible for issuing content to them and reviewing, approving and signing off the completed Newsletters, and managing with them the deadlines for issuing out to our branch members in a timely manner. Working within the parameters of the Sponsorship Agreements and advertising guidelines. Liaising with people/companies who wish to advertise in the newsletter.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Decides the theme/content of each newsletter – in line with the Branches annual mission statement – and in conjunction with the Branch Committee. Ensure that the theme/content is reflective of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and current areas of interest to HR Professionals 2. Sources and liaises with potential article authors and advertisers and sets deadlines for draft completion. 3. Checks articles are not advertorial for businesses. Also checks they contain articles which are balanced in argument, fair and factual in content. 4. Compiles final version of articles which may include writer biography and picture, etc. 5. Decides on newsletter pagination (Flat plan). 6. Liaises with the designer on design and layout of the newsletter pages. 7. Reviews the initial draft of the newsletter from the designer / printer. 8. Checks that suggested amends have been made as required. 9. Liaises back with Authors for final print approval and sign off. 10. Liaises with design / print team over deadlines for publication and distribution. 11. Being organised and timely to ensure publish deadlines are met 12. Ensuring a high standard of publication is maintained.

PERSON SPECIFICATION       

 

The Editor must be an HR professional whom is a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development The Editor must be aware and up to date with current areas of interest, legislation changes and topics which are affecting the HR Professional A high standard of written skills including proof reading, being able to digest and process lots of information and working in HR areas not necessarily within your comfort area Proficient in email and use of Information Technology is essential. The Editor must remember to conduct themselves in a professional, polite and respectful manner as they are representing the CIPD in their capacity as Editor The Editor must have a methodical and organised approach to their work in order to keep on top of the whole process. The Editor must be confident enough to be able to go back to authors and have work re-edited with constructive, helpful pointers – therefore experience of writing articles would be a definite advantage. The Editor may have to reject articles at the final stage and be able to handle these delicate situations with tact and professionalism. The Editor must ensure that all the content of the newsletter compliments each other or offers a balanced view where opposing theories exist. Also that content is compliant with any Sponsorship Agreements in place and advertising guidelines. Must understand and ensure copyright and use/permission for images, etc. The Editor must ensure that content in the newsletter does not breach existing copyright legislation.

This role is not a constitutional requirement. The term of office should be for no more than three years. The person undertaking the role of Newsletter Editor must: o Be able to communicate at all levels o Be aware of own limitations and ask for assistance where appropriate o Be able to write, review and edit excellent copy to a high standard. o Be able to negotiate newsletter content with branch members, and others in the field To apply for the role please email your CV and a covering letter to Joanne Pugh, [email protected] by 5pm, Friday 14 September.
