The School Fettes College, founded in 1870 and administered by the Governors of the Fettes Trust, is an independent school of some 750 boys and girls. There are 560 students in the Senior School (13-18 years), of whom 75% are boarders, and 190 students in the Preparatory School (7-13 years). The School is in membership of AGBIS (Association of Governing Bodies of Independent Schools). The academic staff consists of the Headmaster (a member of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference), the Headmaster of the Fettes College Preparatory School (a member of the Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools) and seventy-five full-time members of the Common Room. There is a strong Old Fettesian Association. The School stands in a magnificent park of approximately 100 acres close to the centre of Edinburgh. The main building contains the Chapel, the Library, some classrooms, the Medical Centre and two boarding houses. The Preparatory School and the other six boarding houses, the Dining Hall, the Music and Art Schools, the Concert Hall, the Science laboratories, a classroom block, the Sports Centre, the All-weather Games Pitch, squash and fives courts are situated in the grounds. A new boarding house has been built adjacent to the Science School to accommodate the whole of the Upper Sixth Form. There are extensive playing fields. The College has been fully co-educational since 1980.

Modern Languages at Fettes College We are a dynamic and enthusiastic department committed to promoting positive attitudes to language learning. Every student has the opportunity to enjoy learning at least one foreign language and to achieve excellent results. Last year 76% of students taking IB at Standard, Higher and Ab Initio level achieved the top grades (6&7) – well above the international average. At A Level (Edexcel), nearly half the students achieved A* or A, and students achieved a 91% pass rate overall. At GCSE (AQA), 75% of students achieved A* and A grades with a 100% pass rate overall.

Students take two modern foreign languages in the Third Form and at least one to GCSE, bucking the national trend. Students choose from French (for non-beginners), German, Spanish and Mandarin. We offer IB Standard and Higher Levels in French, German and Spanish and IB Ab Initio in German, Mandarin and Spanish. Native German speakers can take German Language A: Language and Literature for the IB, and for native Mandarin speakers we offer Mandarin Language A: Literature. Other languages (e.g. Arabic, Italian, Japanese, Modern Greek and Russian) can be studied outwith the curriculum and a few students sit public examinations in these languages each year. In recent years we have had several Oxbridge applicants with a good success rate. German, Mandarin ad Spanish are offered in the Prep School as part of Activity time for at least one half term per year to provide pupils with a taster of the language. The Department is also seeking to promote Mandarin among its feeder prep schools. We offer excellent teaching and facilities and many of our students go on to use languages at university and beyond. Every student has the opportunity to speak regularly with a native speaker to develop spoken fluency and build confidence. We have outstanding ICT facilities including a Smart Board in every classroom and a state-of-the-art digital language laboratory. We aim to combine communicative methods with grammar-based teaching, developing students’ confidence and precision in their work and improving communication in their mother tongue. For each course teachers make use of a designated textbook. However, while the textbook provides some shape to the overall structure of the course and is a useful resource, teachers make use of a wide range of paper-based and interactive resources, many of them self-produced, gathered from years of experience but always of relevance to the students we teach. These include worksheets, quizzes, games, music, internet videos, interactive websites, Boardworks (www.boardworks.co.uk), film, poetry and cartoons. A list of Spanish courses and the textbooks we use is given below. Currently four exchange programmes are in operation with schools in Paris, Munich, Madrid and Yangzhou. These regular exchanges and visits help develop confidence and interest in the subject, as well as helping students to make friendships that can last a lifetime. Students also run a thriving Modern Languages Society, organising events and inviting guest speakers from academia and industry. Last year, to celebrate Chinese New Year, different schools came to Fettes and gave highly entertaining performances of Chinese music and dance. We currently run Immersion Mornings with five other schools in German, French and Spanish.
