hat’s hot this summer? Who would know better than our Reference, Teen and Children’s Librarians? Here’s what they’ve been reading: Amy Garrett, Head of Adult Reference Services recommends Maid of Murder, a funny, cozy mystery by Amanda Flower. The author also just came out with a sequel, Murder in a Basket, and has started a new Amish mystery series that’s coming out soon. Amy’s a real baseball fan, so we shouldn’t be surprised that she also liked Calico Joe by John Grisham. For history buffs, she suggests After Camelot: A Personal History of the Kennedy Family —1968 to the Present by J. Randy Taraborrelli. Amy reads books for all ages, and highly recommends Bootleg: Murder, Moonshine, and the Lawless Years of Prohibition for teens who like nonfiction.

Summer Buzz

Barbara Nelson, Assistant Head of Reference Services, enjoyed Defending Jacob, by William Landay. Susan Falkman, Reference Services Librarian, loved A Discovery of Witches, a contemporary thriller that begins when a long-lost, enchanted manuscript turns

up in Oxford. You’ve just got time to read it before the next book in the series, Shadow of Night, comes out on July 10 – It’s sure to be very popular. Christina Getrost heads up our teen programming. Her favorites this summer are two books by Veronica Roth, Divergent and Insurgent, featuring a teen heroine in a dystopian future Chicago. Both are real page-turners. She also recommends Legend, by Marie Lu. From our Children’s Department: Betsy Adams really got into the Hunger Games series. She’s currently reading Catching Fire and looking forward to Mockingjay.

CONTENTS Meet our Summer Reading Program Artist, Laurie Bulger Chevalley!

Have you noticed the wonderful window paintings in the Children’s Department? These are painted during the summer months and for some holidays by one of our own staff members, Laurie Bulger Chevalley. Laurie works as a Shelving Page but she also has a BFA in Graphic Design and a BFA in painting and drawing from the University of Akron. As you can see, her talents extend far beyond her daily responsibilities at our library. Don’t miss her latest creation upstairs in our Children’s Department!

ow many years have you worked at the library and what positions have you held? 14 years. I’ve been the head of reference services, and then I’ve been director for about eight years.

W

hat is your favorite service at the library? It’s hard to pick. There are so many, but I think it’s our friendly customer service. Our staff is always trying to make you feel welcome, and I feel that’s one of our strengths.

W

hat does the library mean to you? It’s a community gathering place. It’s a great place to explore and find interesting and amazing facts. We also have great programs and services. After all, a library isn’t just a place that holds books and DVDs. We’re all about providing information to the community, so it’s an exciting place for the community to come. It’s their library.

W

hat do you think the library has done to serve the community better? We’re very excited about our passport system that we’ve recently put together. We just completed a year of providing this service, and we have brought in literally hundreds of people to fill out applications for passports and get their photos taken. It’s going to be very successful for the future bringing in new revenue streams for the library. We do this seven days a week, and the program is a very big success.

W

hat’s your favorite feature of the library’s website? I like our home page. When you log onto our website you immediately find all kinds of information about what’s going on at the library today. We have a lot of exciting programs and services, and it gives you an opportunity to browse and see what’s happening at the library.

W

hat is your favorite book? James Clavell’s Shogun is a great adventure story. It won the Pulitzer Prize, and it takes you on an amazing journey through Feudal Japan. It’s very fast paced, and I feel as if I’m taken back in time. I’ve read the book twice.

W

hat was your favorite book when you were a

child? That’s easy. The Cat in the Hat. My mother read it to me, and we went through the whole series. I got my library card, and I was able to get it and check out that book. It made a real impression, and I still remember it to this day.

I

f you could have a super power, what would it be? I guess I would want to have more energy, to be able to do more things and to be able to help people. I would like to be able to not sleep as much so I’d be able to read and keep up on things to do at home. It would allow my wife to give me more work around the house.

W

hen you were a child, what was your favorite subject in school and what was your least favorite subject? I liked geography a lot. I felt that I got a chance to open up a book and look at the world from so many different perspectives. Taking geography really opened up my eyes to how big the world is, and how many adventures I can have. Least Favorite Subject: I would have to say lunch, because it was too short, always in the way, and I just was involved in so many activities and sports I felt lunch was a bother. I would just eat as I was going from class to class.

W

hat is your favorite animal and why? My wife and I have two cats, and they are always getting into trouble. I’m thinking maybe I should write a children’s book about it. They’re always into mischief, a lot like Spike. We’ve had two cats for years, and they actually adopted us. They came to live with us and are now part of our family.

Craig Mancuso

What’s on your

Nightstand? H

ow long have you been a library trustee?

I joined the Board of Trustees in 2003.

W

hat’s your family like? Kids? Siblings?

My wife Debbie and I have a 4-year old girl, Samantha who loves going to the library to get books. She really enjoys the wonderful programs put on by the Children’s Department.

W

hat do you do in your work life?

I am a science teacher. I teach Physics and Earth Science at Springfield High School.

A

re you passionate about any particular hobby?

I love history and reading about and visiting historic sites.

D

o you have any pets?

We have had two rescue dogs, but the last one passed away a few months ago. A new rescue dog will be moving in soon. We have some tropical fish, and my daughter has a beta fish she named Spike, after the turtle in the Children’s Department.

W

a kid?

hat was your favorite book when you were

I do not remember having any one favorite book. I do remember that I was often reading books about history and aviation.

W

now?

hat’s on your nightstand (bookwise)

I recently read Unbroken, an incredible true story of survival in WWII. Right now I am reading A Slave in the White House: Paul Jennings and the Madisons.

W

ho are your top five favorite authors?

I rarely read fiction, but Stephen King is my favorite fiction author. I have enjoyed books by Erik Larson, Simon Winchester, the late Stephen Ambrose, Dava Sobel, David McCullough, and many others whose works bring the past to life.

—continued from page 1 Amy Thomas says The Lemonade Wars series is just perfect for summer (suggested for ages 8-11). Kids into historical fiction should like The Trouble with May Amelia, set in pioneer Washington State. For a summer-themed book for middle-schoolers, try Water Balloon, by Audrey Vernick. And what could be more summery

than mermaids? The Emily Windsnap series, by Liz Kessler is another of Amy’s picks for ages 8-12. Jen Grill likes Plunked. With a sixth-grade pitcher as its main character, this book is a good choice for baseball season. Jen also likes Little Blog on the Prairie. Historical reenactment meets the internet when 13 year old

Genevieve sneaks her cell phone into Frontier Family History Camp. Lastly, Gloria Adams just can’t say enough about the beautiful writing in Icefall, a Nordic-flavored fantasy novel by Matthew Kirby. It won a 2012 Edgar Award and should enthrall kids ages 8 – 12.

Meeting Room Renovation Mary Lou Phipps recognized

Movies Wednesdays: July 11, 18 & 25 1 PM

Join us for popcorn and movies as we present these films on Wednesday afternoons at the library: Journey 2: The Mysterious Island [July 11]; Big Miracle [July 18]; and HOP [July 25]. These movies will be held in the Stow-Munroe Falls Room at the library and are cosponsored by the library and the Friends of the Library.

Have you seen the newly decorated Stow-Munroe Falls Room yet? This meeting room was recently dedicated during a private ribbon cutting ceremony on May 23. The renovation was made possible by a generous donation presented to the library by one of our very own library patrons, Mary Lou Phipps. New carpeting and custom designed graphics for each of the walls were included in the project. If you haven’t attended one of our programs lately, be sure to stop by for a visit. The photograph shown above gives you a sneak preview of what’s to come when you look inside. The library wishes to extend sincere thanks and gratitide to Mary Lou Phipps for her remarkable support and contribution.
