Gita e’Corsa

Che una bellissima giornata!

Words and Photos by Fred Russell

What a beautiful day! The last time NWARC held a Gita e’Corsa event was in 1998, but on June 29, 2013 it was back in all its glory! Initially started back in the early 90s, spearheaded by our long time member, Don McKay along with the late Lorna Moore, the event was well attended with great cars and fun people. The name, Gita e’Corsa, was a suggestion by Carlo & Lino Durante with Gita meaning an “outing” or “event” while Corsa means “track” or “race”. Thanks to the planning efforts of Mirko Freguia and others, this year, the event came back to life true to the name and spirit with a wonderful Track event combined with a nice show/drive event. The day started early for the Corsa side with people at the track the night before, and others arriving at The Ridge Motorsports Track in Shelton from 5 AM onward. The track still has that air of newness with an excellent surface, nice turn stations, clean paddock area, and almost no structures. There are no grandstands or viewing areas. Restrooms are rental outhouses and there are no facilities for food and drink. To supplement this Mirko had partnered with a few wonderful vendors to be at the track so the outside edge of the paddock area had food, drink, shirts, car parts, motorcycle, toys, and even car repair vendors… all there to add their values to the day. In addition, the Club trailer was there with the awning set up with club info as well as vendor info on the tables. The club also had helmets or gloves to loan out to those enjoying a ride a long in a race car. The track was shared by NWARC and the others who were part of Turn 2 Lapping’s clients. This meant that there were plenty of extremely fast Porsches, BMWs, Corvettes and a Ferrari. Around the paddock you could find Lotus, Honda, Mazda and more all taking their turns on the differing lapping sessions. Then in a coned off special area set aside as “little Italy”, were the Alfa Romeos. Among those present were, Dean Sinnott who had come all the way from his soggy wet Calgary to be part of this fun. Mirko Freguia and Chris Benny both had their Milano track cars running. Garth Stein brought out his GTV, which ran well and scrubbed a few miles off his thin tires. Ken Calhoun brought his wide-body GTV out from Ellensburg to run for the day. We also had Dave Kingstone with his GTV and Rene Claudio and his fast Giulietta Spider race car. Earl Krygier brought out his BMW and also enjoyed the day. The day went well with each person enjoying plenty of track time. In fact, I saw a few toward the afternoon who had

Gita e’Corsa Cont’d... another session to run, that skipped their track time. Perhaps the fact that The Ridge Motorsports track can give you a good workout, or perhaps the very warm day, but either way they were tired. The Gita side allowed people to sleep in a little more on June 29th… though some of us didn't understand that. I washed the car at 11:30 PM the night before, then was out waxing the car by 7 AM in preparation for the days events. The day started with Alfa Romeo being the featured marque at the popular car gathering known as Exotics@RTC. This show, held each nice Saturday, draws in amazing cars from an old Citroen DS to brand new Lamborghini Aventadors or McLaren MP4 12Cs. This day we enjoyed 12 beautiful Lamborghinis among them 3 of the Gallardo based Super Trofeo Stradale, which is amazing as there are only 24 in the USA. The only way to top that for crowd appeal was when 3 of the Alfa Romeo 8cCompetizione showed up. “How often will you see 3 of these cars in one place?” asked Tom Nault, organizer of the Exotics show.

The organizers wanted these cars side by side so the owners, Pasquale Perrina, Eric Hawley, and Mike Leonetti moved to center stage in the show to park their cars. In addition, we had 20 more Alfa Romeos on display with 2 164s, a few Milanos, Spiders from differing years, a GTV6, a wonderful 2600, and a GTV. There were a number of Fiat 500s in our group as well including a couple Abarths. This gathering worked as an excellent start point for our drive to the race track in Shelton to join up with the Track folks. One wonderful addition was Steve Schaeffer who showed up with one of the Cycle Car racers he enjoys. These gas powered cars are made to resemble a downsized vintage open wheel car like a Bugatti, Alfa, or on this day, a Maserati. With a little help from Miguel Salguero, Steve was able to get his fun toy running, and with goggles and helmet on he drove through the crowd at the show giving everyone a chance to see, hear, and photograph something special. This brought a smile to the face of all who watched. Very cool. At 11 AM, the folks headed out from Redmond in a long line of 20 cars with our trusty route guide in hand. The path took us along the west side of Lake Sammamish before heading over Newcastle, then some freeway to Tacoma and the Narrows Bridge. Once on the Kitsap Peninsula, we followed back roads for 35 twisty miles along the

NWARC July 2013 newsletter page 2

Gita e’Corsa Cont’d... many shorelines on the scenic way to Shelton. The drive took us 2.5 hours total which was nice on backroads with beautiful views of our NW. Though the normal straight drive to Shelton should be only 1.5 hours on a sunny Saturday, this day had freeway backups and even the Freeway path took 2.5 hours so our route was an excellent choice. Arriving at the track just after 1:30 PM we were able to stretch our legs, eat lunch, and catch up with the Track folks as to how the day had gone for them, so far. At 3 PM, we rounded up the Scenic drive folks for a different drive. Following Mirko in his Milano track car, the line of 18 cars filed onto the race track for a few Parade Laps. The 1st lap was the slowest as we roughly followed the line that Mirko showed us around the track. Then, the second, third, and fourth laps were a little quicker with the gaps between some of the cars opening up a bit. This was a great opportunity for many of us to get an entry level taste of how this track feels while enjoying our Alfa Romeos, Fiats, Lancia, or Lotus. As we returned to the Paddock area from these laps, we found Mike & Keith Willson’s ‘74 GTV had stopped running with what appeared to be a fuel pump issue. While I suggested stealing the pump from Garth’s unguarded car, other more ethical folks simply applied Alfisti talent. Ben from Group 2 Motorsports quickly checked on the car and found an item in the car’s trunk had moved and knocked a wire loose that cut power to a few things… it was quickly remedied with no thievery required. The day’s events went very well and that only happens when the weather, location, and planning meets up with the outstanding numbers of members who turned out for the Gita e’Corsa. Thanks to all who helped put this together, to the vendors who supported and shared, and to all the people who came to Redmond Town Center, and those on the drive. What a wonderful outing… er, I mean Gita!

President’s Column

I’ve heard the complaint that Alfas aren’t reliable. Well, I’ve never owned a new one so can’t really say. Most of the problems I’ve had with mine have either been due to old age or entirely self inflected. This time I came upon a failure that was due to age and self inflicted, by a previous owner! My Milano has ABS and as I was just about to turn into my driveway the flex hose from the pressure pump to the brake line sprung a leak. Since it’s the pressure side it wasn’t a drip drip leak but a spray. Nice mess, but once the accumulator emptied itself all over the engine and driveway I could have a look. Ok, no big deal with the hose failure. Called Alfa Parts Exchange and ordered a new hose (and right rear GTV6 tail lens). Will be here in five days or so. After a day I thought “why didn’t I ask around locally?” Called JVR and he had two! Off to his house and got the hoses. This is going to be a piece of cake! I am on this! Pop the hood and start wrenching. A 15mm socket for both the banjo fitting on the pump and the other end as well. Noticing the old hose looks like one of those Army/Navy, i.e. AN hoses with the steel braided outer jacket and was a small diameter hose compared to the original. Not bad but it shouldn’t have failed in my view. Next was to attach the replacement hose to the brake line . . . It doesn’t fit. What’s going on here? Recheck, sure enough, it doesn’t match. I go to my bolt bin (I have those little bits sorted as I have to know what the sizes they are), and start checking. The original is metric and the other is 7/16”-20. Now what?

By Merril Gordon

I don’t have the tooling to change the fitting back to metric nor the skill. A parts store could be able to provide a replacement. I take the hose to NAPA and they keep it over the weekend. Uuugg, I don’t want to wait! Monday morning the owner calls and says he can’t source it. He suggests I take it to Dreamers in Everett. Never heard of it, sounds like a stripper joint. I search on the web and it’s legitimate. That evening after work I drive from Boeing field up to Everett. It’s bad enough getting home but continuing in heavy traffic just burns time, but I make it in an hour and fifteen minutes. It’s an AN4 hose, fourteen inches long . . . and they don’t have one, but they can have it tomorrow. Great, I get to do that driving drill all over again tomorrow. I finally get that blasted hose and I’m ready, having my fill of driving my old full size gas-hog pickup. It’s a dog too, not responsive at all. Pop the Milano’s hood and install the hose. Turn in the ignition to activate the pump. Brake fluid spraying everywhere, shut off shutoff!!! Leak’s at the banjo fitting. Rotate and tighten a little more. More spray, crap! What’s wrong? I stare at it a while then remember the previous owner had the fitting sitting on a washer. Sure enough the banjo thickness is thinner than the hose fitting. Add a washer and retest. Spray, spray aaahhhHHH!!! Off to the hardware store for rubber and plastic washers. FAIL!!!! What’s going on??? These banjo fittings wouldn’t be around if they didn’t work. I tried numerous combinations all producing leakage. I even got close enough to do a test drive and that version failed as well. Finally thought about copper washers as copper is soft, but is it too soft and maybe brass or bronze would be better? Back to the hardware store (third trip) and found copper ones. Good enough for another try. I’m so gun-shy I clean up all mating surfaces and add gasket sealer and let sit for 15 minutes. Put it all together and cinch it down. Then I go do something else as I want to give those washers time to form or deform to the pressure as I hope that improves the seal. Two hours later I torque the bolt just a little more. Then I turn on the ignition. . . . . no leaks! YEAH!!! Take it on a test drive. Still good. Go on another short drive to the parts store and buy another quart of brake fluid to replace the quart I bought the other day when I started working on this problem. Tomorrow I’ll drive to work and see if it holds. That new quart is in my trunk. I’m sure many of you have had difficult problems like this as well. The upside was not having to perform repairs beside a busy road … in the dark …while raining … with the wind blowing. I don’t want to have to go through that again though. Anyone need an original ABS hose? Actually three, but maybe I should give John back one or two. Merril Gordon NWARC President with a back ache!

NEWS Circuit of the Americas (COTA) appears to be close to signing another race for its fall calendar. The event could bring 600 vintage cars to the circuit in southeast Austin for an Oct 24-27 event. With the great new track they are anticipating a number of European entries "It has taken on an international flavor," said Jon McKnight, Director of Events for SVRA. “There could be 12 classes for racing and that some of the cars would be from the pre-World War II era, including a 1936 Alfa Romeo. Many of the cars are one-of-a-kind. Some are famous cars that have won events." This might be a great chance for some of us with old Alfas to get on that great new track. The Nat’l Convention is happening next week. If you want to drive down or back in a small group… Contact Fred Russell at 425 308 6621. He’s leaving Saturday July 6th to get to Rohnert Park on July 8th. The return trip leaves July 12th to return to the Seattle area July 14th.

Reservation Time!

Our travels will be on Sept 14,15,16. Plan to chip in $20 planning fee per car, and make sure you have your Passport, and a flashlight. We’ll also start the drive with a breakfast at the Original Pancake House on the Bothell-Everett Highway, just North of Bothell. Arriving at 8 AM means you eat breakfast before we head out. Arriving later means you join us as we leave at 9 AM on our drive. Following the North Cascades Hwy and its rugged, beautiful mountains. Next we drive through Loup-Loup Pass, going past the sight of the Sheep Massacre, then stay in the fun town of Omak on Saturday night. Our hotel that night is the Best Western Peppertree Inn. That evening, there is an 3 hour optional tour to Grand Coulee Dam to see the new laser show on the huge spillway, which makes for a nice white screen. The good side is it cool to see the laser but it does mean you’ll be out a little late. That may get in the way of your wine and party plans! On Sunday, we’ll enjoy breakfast in Omak then wander up north, passing the numerous orchards of the Okanagan River Valley. Turning west, we’ll follow up the scenic Similkameen River to the tiny border crossing known as Nighthawk. It’s a rather sleepy spot named after a ghost town nearby. Thanks to tighter border security, there are a few more people around than when I went through here 20 years ago and it was just a house by the side of the road. Because we’ll be entering Canada, don’t plan to have any hidden fruit, weapons, or photos of Anne Murray with a mustache. We’ll travel westbound back through the Cascades on Canada’s Crowsnest Hwy. Our speeds will be down a little for safety as we watch for bear, cougar, elk, deer, moose, sasquatch… all common along this stretch. We’ll take a short hike… along a short, paved flat pathway touring the Othello Tunnels and the river below. (No bears allowed.) Our Sunday night, we stay at Harrison Hot Springs Resort with a group dinner that evening! Monday morning, we visit a historic old country store, then tour the beautiful Minter Gardens before heading back across the border to the USA. This means that you will each want to ensure you have your Passport in good standing and you’re not a convicted felon. Both are key for crossings.

July 27th

Our fourth annual Viva Italia Car & Motorcycle show will be held on July 27th and once again, Columbia Winery in Woodinville will be our host location. Open from 10:30 AM - 3:30 PM, to all Italian marques. The event is proceeded by the Alfa Romeo Day at the Exotics at Redmond Town Center so we should get some nice carryover of participants. This is a great chance to enjoy sharing your Italian car or motorcycle with others… perfect garage queen, club racer, or dusty daily driver can all display side by side. It is a no-cost event, but we ask that you bring a donation of non-perishable foods or money for the local food bank. As an open event, you can come and go when the timing works best for you. No judging, no rules, just the enjoyment of Italian style and engineering. Where: Columbia Winery 14030 Northeast 145th Street in Woodinville NWARC July 2013 newsletter page 6

Save the Date!

Aug 3rd!

Once again Ken and Louisa Case will be sponsoring a local drive event this August. The event will take place August 3 starting at 11:00 AM and will last about three hours. Participants will leave from the Burger King located at 1705 NW Gilman Blvd in Issaquah (just south of exit 15 on I-90). The drive route will cover interesting out-of-the way mostly two lane back roads. In the middle of the drive we will stop to refresh and visit points of interest in Black Diamond. At the end of the event we will return to Issaquah, stopping at Extreme Pizza (660 Front St N) where we can have a snack and share our experience. Save the date, and be sure to come. A good time was had last year, and the plan is to do it again.

Tow Dolly Timeshare?

Anyone Interested?

There are times we need to tow a broken car, project car, or a new purchase car and we end up borrowing a trailer, calling a tow service, or renting a tow dolly. Most of us have faced this choice a few times. A suggestion was floated to me that perhaps a few of us would like to pool our money and simply buy one to use when the need arises. If only a couple people buy in, we can get a good used one for around $1000. If a few buy in, we may want to splurge and buy a new one for around $2300. We would have to share the cost to license and insure it, but those details can be worked out. Whoever agrees to store it may be able to buy in at a reduced portion cost, as well as perhaps not pay towards the license and insurance expense. Last thought… if your reading this and suddenly remember that you own a perfectly good Tow Dolly, you may want to sell most of it to this timeshare Tow Dolly venture. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this!
