We have tried something new with a breakfast at Jim Borgett’s. This did not take the place of our usual social event. Due to limited space we could not invite everybody. It was such a lovely outing that we shall definitely try a breakfast outing again at a bigger venue that will be able to accommodate all our regulars.

We are still busy with maintenance and renovations at the Clubhouse. I apologize for any inconvenience caused while we are busy, but I am positive that we shall benefit from it. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all that is helping with the renovations, especially Roche Hurter and his helpers.

Editorial My profuse apologies for the very, very late newsletter. Life got in the way. My sons were on my case about getting it out on time and then work projects and some other life things happened.

I’d like to ask everyone who attended the Milligan and also those who took part in the Liefie Bosch to email me. If you have a photo or two, please send them to me with one or two sentences about the experience. I have an idea for an article, but I’d like everyones input to make a success of it. Pretty please. One or two sentences and don’t worry about grammar or spelling. I’ll sort it all out in the article. I’m counting on you. 

tank becomes vapour. Those vapours are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.

SAVVA Technical Tip No 75 Saving Fuel This E-mail did its rounds some time ago. However, with the price of petrol escalating the way it is maybe it's worth considering its contents. I don't know from where or from whom it originated.

One of the most important tips is to fill up when your tank is HALF FULL. The reason for this is because the more fuel you have in your tank the less air is occupying its empty space. Petrol evaporates faster than you can imagine. Petroleum storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the petrol and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every litre is actually the exact amount.

“Tips when filling your car Only buy or fill up your car or bakkie in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the fuel, when it gets warmer petrol expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening your litre is not exactly a litre. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the petrol, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role. A one degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

Another reminder, if there is a fuel truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy, DO NOT fill up - most likely the petrol/diesel is being stirred up as the fuel is being delivered and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom. Hope this will help you get the most value for your money.”

When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapours that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapour return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your

Re- The SPEEDYQUIP MADIBA BAY CAR SHOW on 31 August 2013 The East Cape Street Rod & Custom Cars Club will hold its 4th annual Speedyquip Madiba Bay Car Show at the Otto Du Plessis High School Sport Field on Saturday 31 August 2013. Gates will be open to the public from 9 am. This Car show began in 2010, with about 150 cars being exhibited. Last year this figure has grown to 278 cars and 3900 visitors!!!!!. It is our aim to improve on last year’s figure with your participation, sponsorship and/or donations. This is a charity event for various old age homes, as well as animal welfare organizations. In 2012 we dedicated the proceeds from our Car Show to our nominated charities in the region. This event also provides a showcase for members of the motor trade to display their latest range of models, accessories and services to the public. Obviously everybody is welcome to display non motor related products. We have different sizes of sites available for participants at set rates as detailed below: (please note that electricity will not be available to any of the sites) Sites for car dealers at R750.00 per site of 12m x 6m. Sites for businesses at R250.00 per site of 6m x 4m. Sites for entrepreneurs at R100.00 per site of 4m x 4m. We extend a friendly request to all the participants of last year, to join us again this year, to make this even a bigger success, an event to diarize on our annual calendar. For all the new participants, come and join us in this fun event, if you snooze, you lose!!!!!!!!!! We will provide you with a monthly update about our progress and events planned for the day. We appreciate your favorable consideration to support this worthy cause!

pressure the tyre started. The greatest danger, and we see it often, is that these hot tyre pressures are reduced to the drivers recommended pressure, which may be 200kPa, or 2 Bar.

Tyre Pressure Maintenance Rodney Idris The pressures in your tyres on your vehicle should only be corrected to those recommended by the vehicle manufacturer when they are COLD. Cold means first thing in the morning and with the vehicle having travelled less than 1,5km after start up at town speeds.

If the tyres are hot, my suggestion is that you inflate them to 80kPa above the recommended pressure and, then, the following morning, while the tyres are still cold, correct the pressures to the vehicle manufacturers recommended pressures using your own tyre pressure gauge. Tyre Pressure gauges can be obtained from motor spare shops and many tyre outlets, and are well worth the investment. A good one will last you a life time.

Image: www.coopertyres.co.za

I think to most of us this has got to be one of the most inconvenient times to check and correct tyre pressures.

They also make a wonderful birthday gift, and would be a very useful piece of equipment to enhance road safety, if given at the time young people get their drivers licences.

After-all, we are normally running late, or want to get into the office early, or have a need to miss the traffic.

A lot of us are also loyal to the local service station, so find it more convenient to fill up with fuel and have our mini service on the garage forecourt on the way home. The problem here is that the tyres are Hot. The tyre pressures may well have built up by more than 20%, and you will have no way of knowing at what

car was knocked down to a 'unnamed buyer'.

World’s oldest running car sells for record price Email from Riaan Hanekom

The Dos-a-Dos (Back-to-Back) Steam Runabout was built in 1884 by George Bouton and Charles-Armand Trepardoux for French entrepreneur Count de Dion, who named it 'La Marquise' after his mother.

This is the oldest motor vehicle car in the world that still runs. It was built one year before Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler invented the internal combustion engine. The world's oldest running motor vehicle has been sold at auction for an astonishing $4.62 million , more than double the pre-sale estimate, as two bidders chased the price up in a three-minute bidding war.

In 1887, with De Dion at the tiller, it won the world's first ever motor race (it was the only entrant to make the start line!) covering the 32km from the Pont de Neuilly in Paris to Versailles and back in one hour and 14 minutes (an average of 25.9km/h) and, according to contemporary reports, hitting a breathtaking 60km/h on the straights.

Count de Dion winning the first ever motor race.

The 1884 De Dion Bouton et Trepardoux Dos-a-Dos Steam Runabout drew a standing ovation as it was 'driven up onto the stage' at Friday's RM Auction in Hershey, Pennsylvania - to prove that this 127year-old car really does run! - And attracted a starting bid of $500 000, which was immediately doubled to $1 million. Encouraged by the applauding crowd, the bidding went swiftly up to $4.2 million - 4.62 million including the 10 percent commission before the

La Marquise has only had four owners, remaining in one family for 81 years, and has been restored twice, once by the Doriol family and again by British collector Tom Moore in the early 1990's. Since then, it has taken part in four London-to-Brighton runs and collected a double gold at the 1997 Pebble Beach 'd'Elegance in California'.

EPVCC BREAKFAST AT JIM BORGESS’S DEER PARK HOME Desireé Nel

On the 14th of July the EPVCC enjoyed a breakfast outing, instead of having an evening social function at the Clubhouse. It was a chilly morning with a slight drizzle of rain so we had to move indoors and could not make use of the beautiful deck overlooking the green meadow. Nevertheless, everyone feasted on a hearty breakfast cooked by Jim Borgess and his wife which was served by a very able waiter Llewellyn!

Now, if I could just get my hands on that one!

And this is where the fresh OJ comes from…

2013 SAVVA NATIONAL TOUR FOR VEHICLES MANUFACTURED BEFORE JANUARY 1981 Hosted by the Free State Veteran Car Club from 25 – 29 September 2013, in the picturesque Eastern Free State area. As with previous National Tours hosted by our Club, the three day competitive event, at an extremely reasonable cost, will emphasize usage of the old cars and kindle new and existing relationships. We would like to request older owners, with older cars, to make a concerted effort to participate. Those not interested in the formal reliability run, may enter as noncompetitors, allowing them to enjoy their old cars on the open road.

IDENTITY CRISIS We received the following email from David Stubbins in New Zealand: “Greetings to you from New Zealand. I got your address off your clubs web site and hoped that you may be able to help me identify this old motorcar. It belonged to my grandmothers family and I estimate the date of the photo to be somewhere between 1903 to 1912. My gran was born and lived in Cape Town. The back of the picture said “Seat stuck in the Oliefants river after the bridge had been washed away near Modderfontein”. The car was dragged out of the river by a span of horses at a cost of 2 pounds – a small fortune in those days!! I am not too sure if Seat Motorcars were made or were available in South Africa at that time. The registration incidentally was CA1803.”

Ed’s note: This reminds me somehow of an old Alfa Romeo. They had those sloped bonnet pieces between the nose and the windscreen. The decal is also round, the way the old Alfa decals were. I may be hopelessly wrong, though. Anyone with any info…please let me know so that we can pass on the info to David. 

I have a 1932 Chrysler CP Eight sedan (RHD), which is in need of a full restoration and I am trying to find out if there are any of this model or similar in South Africa including Dodges and Plymouths. I do know that there is a 1933 Imperial Eight Coupe in Cape Town, which I saw at a show some time ago before I had even set eyes on my car. The '33 Imperials were basically CP Eights under their skin. I later contacted the owner, Mr Rolf Schwerdtfeger, but he subsequently sold it. Would you know of any such cars or similar in South Africa or anyone who may be able to assist with parts for them?
