A Job Well Done On July 16, six pipe insulators (X33) and X71 Foreman Howard Dobie were recognized for a “job well done” by leadership for responding to an urgent situation at the Kesselring Site in New York. “The crew willingly made personal sacrifices to travel to the Kesselring site for insulation removal and restoration work being completed on one of the site’s training prototypes. The team was not only successful in their work but completed a 10-day job in only six days,” said Kent Williams, NNS director and site manager at Kesselring. Director Jim Coppa kicked off the event by congratulating the team on their hard work. “I really appreciate the sacrifice, ownership, accountability and quality of work that you all did on such short notice,” he said to the crew. “Having

not worked together in the past, you came together with flying colors and the job was completed with a magnificent showing of your talent! I can’t say enough about your dedication to the department and to the company. Each of you are ‘top shelf’ employees and I can’t tell you enough how proud I am to be a part of your team.” Crew members Ricky Dunston and Derrick Gay both agreed that the job was a huge team effort. “We all pulled together to get the job done,” said Dunston.

Eight Years “Accident-Free” and Counting... X15 Shipbuilders working in the Fab Shop’s Shape Field were recognized by department leadership and Structural Fabrication and Assembly (SFA) Director Rob Hogan for operating eight years without a personnel injury and seven years without a crane accident while performing more than 270,000 lifts. To celebrate the achievement, the shipbuilders were treated to a steak luncheon with baked potatoes, corn, salad and cake.

Barry Fallon, X15 superintendent, congratulated the team. “Going eight years without a single injury is awesome,” he said. “You all are showing that zero injuries can be achieved. X15 Safety Task Team Leader Marty Womack, added, “This proves that you can be safe and meet quality, cost, and schedule goals. There is no excuse for working unsafe to meet other goals -- safety is number one.”

SHIPs Network Hosts Annual Summer Picnic More than 325 SHIPs Network members and their families attended this year’s annual Summer Picnic on Saturday, July 20 at Big Bethel Park in Hampton. Attendees took part in face painting, corn-hole games, water balloon tosses, and sack races. A DJ was onsite to provide music and there was plenty of food for all attendees. “Every year I look forward to the SHIPs Network Summer Picnic,” said Tabitha Boone (E26). “It’s a great way to unite family, friends and meet new people while having fun.” Mike Yankanwich (X36) attended the picnic for the first time this year. “I had a great time,” he said. “Being able to socialize with shipbuilders outside of our typical work environment was the highlight for me.” SHIPs Network is the largest employee resource group (ERG) at Newport News Shipbuilding. All shipbuilders are eligible to join. For more information, visit the SHIPs Yardnet website.

NNS Hosts Area Teachers for Summer Internship Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) is hosting 24 area teachers for the company’s second annual teacher internship program. Two sessions are being held; July 8-19 and July 29 Aug. 9. During the two-week, paid internship, teachers learn about trades at NNS through hands-on activities, guest speakers and tours through various shipyard shops. Matt Mulherin, president of NNS, spoke to the first group on July 9. Mulherin provided an overview of how teachers can provide a link between STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education and the positions at NNS. Product Training Manager Jeffrica Key (O26) worked with and managed the group for the two weeks. “NNS is

committed to attracting and hiring the best possible people for our business,” Key said. “Career Pathways along with Trades Training affords teachers and counselors from the Peninsula and Southside the opportunity to learn about the shipbuilding process with hands-on experiences and panel discussions. This higher level awareness is then brought back to students helping them make better decisions about their future. It also steers candidates with the appropriate skill sets and motivation toward the type of work we do here at NNS.”

Staying Engaged The annual Engagement Survey questions are designed to reveal the connections employees feel to their work, their teams and the company. Twice a month in Currents, shipbuilders will share what they believe are at the heart of each survey question and what is working well for their teams. In this issue, read thoughts on:

“Q7: At work, my opinions seem to count.” Christopher Rohlf Designer E46 Ship Survivability “When an issue arises and we sit down at the table to discuss what the problem is, where it is and how to go about solving it -- all opinions are considered before the course of action is implemented. I am a 29-year veteran of Newport News Shipbuilding and it wasn’t always like this. As the yard has evolved, it seems as if everyone now does have input. I think the team concept is stronger and more reflective of how we do business, and how we should go about our daily business.” What is working well for your team? “It helps our team with diversity. Twenty and 30 year olds look at the world differently than my generation. Each has merit. We took a Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) approach of “New Class of Carrier.” We embraced change and looked at all aspects of our business from a standpoint of “what can we make better” for the Ford-class in lieu of ‘let’s do what is easy’ or ‘let’s do what we have done in the past’ because it worked.”

Shawn Potter Material Support O53 Logistics “At Newport News Shipbuilding’s main shipping warehouse, the ‘PINK TEAM’ under the leadership of O53 Material Handling Supervisor Eden HillJones, our opinion does count. I say that because we are asked at least two times a day do we have anything to offer the group good or bad. We take ownership in what we do and share our thoughts. It is what has kept us accident -free for over a year now. It also has allowed us to increase output daily to the waterfront.” What is working well for your team? “We share our suggestions daily. If for some reason a person does not want to speak in front of the team we have a suggestion box where they can put their idea, suggestion or even concern. The box is collected at the end of the shift. We also have a timeframe that a response is to be communicated back to the team member. That alone lets you know that someone is listening. Does our opinion seem to count at the work place? Here on the ‘PINK TEAM’ I can say yes, my opinion does count.”

Visit the Employee Engagement website on Yardnet for tools, resources and a list of engagement contacts for Newport News Shipbuilding.

What Does Gallup Say About Q7? Managers who value an individual’s opinions will receive a higher return than managers who establish a salary or “price” relationship between the employee and the organization. Team members who give this element high scores feel they have access to channels of communication across different levels or divisions of the organization, and their managers work to maintain those channels. Groups do not funcation well when team members feel insignificant or irrelevant. Read more about Gallup’s response to Q7 of the Employee Engagement Survey on Yardnet.
