“From the Prez (Press) room” Had a blast at the Shannons Extravaganza, this is Darwin’s biggest car show and it was great to see what’s around in the Top End. It was just petrol head heaven. As always the Steak Sanga’s were a hit with the crowd and I have to say a big thank you to those who put in a shift on the BBQ.

Copies of the Constitution are available from George Shepherd, 89230765 during business hours or 89882425 after hours. As the AGM will soon be upon us I would like to advise that all positions on the committee will become vacant. I will not be standing in for President this year, after three years in the job I feel its time for someone to step in and put a new light on things. The Presidency is a challenge but it earns great satisfaction and has all the support from a dedicated and hard working committee. With the members blessing I would still like to remain on the committee, do the newsletter and share catering an organisational duties.

“Membership” Renewal notices should be sent out soon and membership for the 2008/2009 financial year can be paid before the 31st of July. Renewals paid before the end of July is only $25, after that you will need to rejoin at the full fee of $30.

Members are advised that they need to be financial at all times under VCC plates. You’re car may be Cheers Wilko [email protected] deemed unregistered if you are un-financial. July 2008 1

Here’s some great before and after pictures that Albert Wilson sent in of his HZ sedan in Katherine.

“All The Goss” Have your car in a movie Peter Malatesta is putting together a movie set in Darwin around 1975 and is after cars of the era to be used as ‘dressing’ vehicles, or one for the hero. Shooting starts late June early July. The film is entitled Balibo, stars Anthony La Paglia and is directed by Robert Connolly who brought us “The Bank” and “Three Dollars”. Robert also produced “Romulus my Father”. Peter will pay good dollars and can be contacted on 0403866036.

Well we have done it, we have passed the $5000 mark on our club account with Rare Spares and now in the process of getting a club banner from the company. We have a challenge with the logo however, if you are into multimedia and can fix up our logo let me know ASAP.

Albert has painted the inside of the boot and the underside of the bonnet and engine bay black and he has also installed power steering using a VH pump and bracket and HZ box and hoses, Albert reports that the car is really nice to drive now.

On behalf of the club I would like to thank all of you who have purchased items from Ashley at his Coconut Grove store. I would like to thank Ashley and Rare Spares for their continued support of our club. Congratulations to George Williams and his partner with the birth of their baby girl, and the name???........Georgie! The family has a long history of Georges and so the Daughter carries it on. Kerry Kyriacou felt the need for speed at the Shannons day outing and is planning an engine transplant for his Munro. That engine will now go into a UC Coupe that he purchased through the Lovegrove auctions. It is definitely a work in progress as it was a council roadside pickup and he plans to turn it into an A9X tribute. If you have any LH/LX parts that you want to part with give him a buzz.

Welcome to new member Gerard Scott with his daughter Alex and his new toy, this car is absolutely sensational, most of you would have drooled over it at the Shannons Extravaganza club display.

Harry Mellios’s son Christos recently got his “L plates and wanted to drive in a manual so off they set in Harry’s immaculate FJ ute. Things were going well until they got to the McMillans rd roundabout and he was rear ended by another car. There wasn’t much damage to the FJ (the other car was a different matter though). Christos will always be able to remember his first accident, after all he was in a piece of automotive history. To be determined he still drove the car home (always jump back on that horse Christo).

“Previous Functions” Shannons Extravaganza Cars Cars every where, the Shannon’s extravaganza has once again proved to be the premier motoring event of the NT, with over 500 vehicles on display it was petrol heaven. From the rare and exotics, modified gas guzzlers to pristine originals it was not to be missed. I got lost in it all, this is the third year its been held and its gone from fantastic to awesome. Having the cars on the main oval made it all that much better.

The weekend was also the unveiling of the new club ‘T’shirts and hats, they were delivered just in time that Friday afternoon. They definitely look the business and are now for sale, if you want to fly the colours, contact Ian on 89 831 318 . “David Clark’s Hot Rod Humpy”

“A brilliant display of Holdens”

“Kevin Alchin’s’Grumpy’ grew bug eyes”

The club display was so much better this year with a total of 29 cars, 24 in the main display and 5 inside the Foskey pavilion. It was good to see some cars that have been off the road for a while, all nice and shiny, and it was great to see new members Nathan Wotton, David Clark, Simon Love and Gerard Scott with their cars displayed for the first time. “Volunteers on the BBQ”

We managed to pull of a few of the trophies as well, Trevor Tshirpig with best modified “49-55”, Kerry Kyriacou best modified “70-79”, Les Wilson best original “59-60” and Alan Stalker who took home “People’s Choice” with his newly restored XU1 Torana. All cars were more than worthy recipients for their awards. May thanks go the John Palamountain and the Shannon’s Team for making it happen. Make sure you get on board for next year. “Alan Stalkers XU! Finnaly back together”

We did well on the BBQ once again, we sold a truck load full of steaks. Many thanks go to not only the committee but Steve Moller, Peter Madigan, Harry Mellios, Joe Mathews, Eliott Wilson, Paul Dyer, Rex Hales. John & Kathleen Hocking, my Mum Toni, Ian & Pam Campbell and a very special thank you to their Grand-daughter Shiann who put in a trojan effort all weekend. You can pat yourselves on the back for a job well done. I would also like to thank all those who helped set up and put down the marquee. Job well done guys.

David Gosper HQ SS Standard twin Standard Belmot/SS Standard Disc/drum GTS

I was looking for another hobby in life, I regular fish with my boat, and have two other ute work cars, but wanted something different to drive around. I have never owned a V8 before but I have had two Toranas in my younger days a LJ 4 door and LH sedan, which had warm 202 & 186s in them. I started to look around town for something V8 but couldn’t find much for sale, I didn’t want a new or 10 year old car, so I started thinking about the older HK-HG GTS which are very expensive now so raised my sites at the HQ -HZ GTS Monaro. I started checking out E-bay prices and settled on a 8/72 HQ SS Lettuce Alone, they were different and not many were made, not a Monaro or GTS but a bit of both. Only 2600 were ever made in two batches all in late 72. So I did a little research and decided the HQ SS was it.

1972 253 V8 Aussie 4 speed Standard, coils all round Lettuce Alone Red walls

I am happy with the car now, its all sorted and quite good to drive on the road for a 1972 vintage car, there is no air conditioning and the car is quite hot to drive during the middle of day with black interior, I take it out twice a week to get everything turning over, mainly first thing in the morning or late afternoon, when its cooler, (the car runs cool, but the driver runs hot!) The HQ SS has a High compression 253 V8 with a mild cam and extractors, M20 aussie 4 speed and Salisbury 3.36 diff. There are always things to do on a car like this, but I will take my time and enjoy the car for the next 10-15 years. I love the sound of the old V8's and rather enjoy cruising in it as its a very easy and enjoyable hobby, not like the preparation of the boat where you need two hours of cleaning and packing every time you take it out, I just put it back in the garage and give it a wipe over before going out.

I bought it in February this year on E-bay pretty much as is, there was a few issues mechanically, I also had dramas with the M20 gearbox and there was no rego and I had trouble with the lights. So I asked Eddie at Action Autos Parap to do a rego inspection and get it all roadworthy which he did, at a very good price and I recommend anyone to go there if they have troubles with there car.
