G7 REMANUFACTURING IS PART OF THE G7 SUMMIT DECLARATIONS The Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association (APRA) is proud to announce APRA, along with CLEPA, FIRM and VDA, were able to include the term/topic "Remanufacturing" in the official G7 documents. The sustainable and continuous lobbying efforts of the last couple of years have been successful. Remanufacturing is covered under "Resource Efficiency" and it says that G7 is going to establish "...the G7Allicance on Resource Efficiency as a forum to share knowledge and create information networks ... As set out in the annex, the Alliance will collaborate with businesses, SMEs, and other relevant stakeholders to advance opportunities offered by resource efficiency, promote best practices, and foster innovation...." In addition, the annex states under the headline "G7-Allicance on Resource Efficiency": "... A series of workshops on best practices will initiate this process. Subjects to be addressed in workshops under the G7-Alliance on Resource Efficiency could include: ... Circular economies, eco-design, sharing economies and remanufacturing ..." APRA - the only global remanufacturing association - continues to represent our members and keep contact with the decision-makers of the political landscape to represent your business interests and ensure they are acknowledged.

APRA WELCOMES NEW TECHNICAL MANAGER Wes Grueninger has taken on the newly-created role of APRA Technical Manager. Grueninger will be directing content for the APRA web site. The APRA is committed to creating a web site that will serve as a one-stop portal to all things related to remanufacturing. "We want to create a web site where our members can find answers to all of their rebuilding questions—managerial, technical, regulatory and even political," said George Davis, APRA Technical Director. Having run his own rebuilding operation for 35 years, Grueninger is no newcomer to our industry. He also brings 11 years of experience with web site development to the job. Previously, Grueninger had run an auto salvage, a car lot, a complete auto repair facility and an alternator/starter rebuilding company. "I've been involved in some sort of automotive business my entire career. The longest stretch was 35 years at my rebuilding shop," Grueninger said. "I became interested in computers in the mid-1980s when I was looking for a software system to manage cores. At that time, we were manually maintaining a "core bank" for each customer. The amount of bookkeeping time was overwhelming, and it seemed to me that a properly designed software system could do — continued on page 10

The APRA Global Connection

Kripli's Corner Celebrate, Celebrate!! Wow, unbelievable, the G7 met last month and during these events they set global mandates and direction, and during this G7 Summit within the discussions of Circular Economy the word “Remanufacturing” was structured within the remarks and direction set by the G7. This, ladies and gentlemen, is a first for our industry and shows that we have come a long way. This is the first time in political history that the word “Remanufacturing” is set forth within a political document, a document ladies and gentlemen, signed by our own President Barack Obama. This indeed is historical. Kudos to our own Peter Bartel and Salvador Munoz Zarate who spearheaded this endeavor. At the time of this writing I have just completed the ReMaTec 2015 and the World Reman Summit, both events were heavily attended by not only leaders of our industry but numerous universities and professionals interested in not only what we do, but

The Value of Physical Work. Mohammad Samii A few Sundays ago I was listening to an NPR interview with the American writer Matthew Crawford. He is a physics major with PhD in political philosophy who is currently a senior fellow at the University of Virginia’s Center for Advance Studies in Culture, who incidentally is a working motorcycle mechanic and shop owner! His books and thoughts are about the value of physical work, which in this radio interview he explained how the removal of shop classes from high school curriculum during the 80’s and 90’s which was supposed to move the students toward “knowledge worker” careers discouraged the value of actual mechanical labor and lessened the satisfaction one would get from an actual tangible job done right. He added that now we are seeing more mechanical and architectural design as well as software and other intellectual properties that we were supposed to excel in rather than working with our hands, are being also farmed out to remote and cheaper markets. What stuck with me from this interview was the closing comment that no matter where a building is designed, it will take a carpenter to nail down the floor board, a plumber to run the pipes and an electrician to rough in the wiring. And the clincher comment; “The internet cannot hammer down a nail!” I was thinking about this interview and thinking how it relates to our business. No matter where a unit is made or came from, it still needs to be diagnosed and replaced properly, and that cannot be done by a cheap labor force halfway across the world. I wish it was not this way and we still had our manufacturing base, but the realities of the economics and marketplace are undeniable. I am just wishing the new generation of customers maintain a better understanding of the value of mechanical work, and understands that everything cannot be done by pushing the keyboard or touching the screen. Someone has to do the actual work which indeed requires a great amount of know-how, even if our hands get dirty at times. This interview was heavily on my mind when we were repairing a Finn Hyro-Seeder that you will read about it later in this column.

Battery Location The aerodynamic shape of certain vehicles does not allow much room in the engine compartment for the battery, thus the designers put them in any available space. Some of these spaces are hard to reach, thus access to the battery is very difficult. The dealers are not very much concerned about the battery locations because they hardly ever have to work on them. A new battery on a new car will easily last the first 5 years of ownership without much need for replacement or service. But when the years add up and the miles pile on, the condition of the car, engine, and battery deteriorates, and inspection, service and replacement of the battery becomes a lot more important. That’s when the occasional charging problems and intermittent starting issues show their annoying little heads.

4

July 2015 APRA Global Connection

Inspecting or replacing these hidden batteries is not something that can be quickly done. Figure-1 shows the process of the battery replacement on a 2006 Sebring. The vehicle needs to be hoisted, front left wheel taken off; an access door or the inner fender cover needs to be removed until the battery is exposed. This work is required not only for replacing the battery, but servicing the cable ends (a must after a starter change) or simply accessing the battery for testing. Obviously there is some labor charge involved for doing this work and the customer needs to be informed. Once they learn where the battery is located and how much work it takes to get to it, they do understand the problem.

truck and SUV market where it is hard to find a GM produced vehicle that does not use this system, with the minor exception of certain re-badged imports. The philosophy behind variable set points which GM’s RVC does it by going into varied modes of operation is supposed to maintain the battery voltage at a lower level that corresponds to 80% SOC when certain load criteria are met. This is believed to increase the battery life as well as saving the energy that is used to push the SOC that extra 20% We are seeing similar features on Honda, Hyundai, and Nissan as well as others that the PCM’s input to the alternator/regulator, either direct or via the data bus, are basically constituting a more precise command over the charging system voltage and consequently affecting the battery’s SOC. Figure-2 shows a battery sensor that is part of Alternator Management System (AMS) used on a 2012/2013 Hyundai Elentra. The alternator actually has a COM terminal as well as “L” and “FR" terminal. PCM can control the charging rate during the entire range of the RPM, decreasing the voltage in acceleration for load control, and increasing the voltage in deceleration to take advantage of available free power.

Figure-1 A 2006 Sebring’s Battery Location in the Front left Wheel Well

You can just imagine an entry-level employee of an auto part store trying to do this work in their parking lot under a pouring down rain, or worse, in a wintry afternoon with temperature on the minus side of the scale and blowing snow! My sources tell me a lot of auto part stores are now warned about installing batteries in customers’ vehicles due to many technical and safety issues causing liability issues for the store.

Variable Voltage Settings! During a seminar lately I was asked if the trend toward having variable charging system voltage set point and keeping the State-of-Charge (SOC) of the battery below 100% is a new trend. The answer is an emphatic yes… but this is not a necessarily a new thing. Starting from late 80’s, we encountered Dual Mode Honda/Acura charging system when certain criteria such as the required load, temperature, engine speed, etc. were met, the system, going by the command of an ELD (Electronic Load Detector) would reduce the system voltage to 12.6V, and practically turn the alternator into a trickle charger. We may also consider the Ford PCM controlled charging system (the one with A-Sig-Fr regulator pins) a sort of variable charging system set point, as the width of the pulse applied to the “Sig” terminal will set the charging system voltage during the very short time-base that it is applied. A full-blown RVC (Regulated Voltage Control) system introduced by GM since 2005 is the very good example. It was used only in certain models but gradually expanded into nearly full line of the GM car, light

Figure-2 Hyundai Battery Sensor

And of course there are the familiar COM regulators used by Bosch, Valeo, and others that make the alternator/regulator an actual “Node” of the communication system as any other modules on the vehicles communication bus, enabling a two way data communication between the alternator, PCM, and various other module. The BSS and LIN are the common such types used by Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volvo, Jaguar, as well as others. The systems that I have mentioned here and have explained from time to time be will discussed in more details in the future Electrical Clinics and seminars to shed a light on the new emerging changes in the vehicles electrical/electronic systems.

Diversification…! When sales of the rotating electrical units slows down, a business is forced to look into alternatives, and since we have been in the service and on-vehicle part of the business since our day one, we do occasionally venture into works which at times turns into an interesting and also profitable projects. We had a call from a local contractor who had a problem with the starting system of their Hydro-Seeder machine — continued on page 5

Auto Electric Corner — continued from page 4

that they said has a small Diesel engine. We told them to bring it over to see what we can do if anything! When it was pulled in by their truck (Figure-3) and we asked what this machine does, we found out it is a machine that has a 1000 gallon tank capacity, for mixing a fine mixture of grass seed, fertilizer, and mulch, and can spay an area little over 1/3 of an acre in one load in about 15 minutes! It basically lays an inch thick sod foundation that will turn into the grass in a short time. Think of it as a sort of spray-on lawn machine, if you will.

time with a Hydro-Seeder problem, now I know what kind of machine he would be talking about.

More Testing with AD-100 In the last month issue I featured a new device called AutoDiagger-100 (AD-100) which is a nifty little test box with a lot of capability. As occasions grew and different units showed up, we tested more different types of units which I share some pictures with you. First was a 13883 alternator which has a P-D regulator. The AD-100 tested it just fine when the “P-D” was selected off the opening menu and the green clip of the tester was connected to the “D” terminal of the alternator. By clicking “+” and “- “ buttons, we could easily see the change of voltage on the test box, verified by what we could see on the test bench. (Figure-5)

Figure-3 Finn T-120 Hydro-Seeder Machine

The machine is made by Finn Corporation of Ohio (www.finncorp.com). A call to the company and asking for help directed us to their service website which they very kindly helped us by providing a temporary log-in and password, and then we were in. They also asked us the serial number of the machine which gave us instruction to what exact model number we needed to look for, and once the we got to the right place, a 60-page PDF was downloaded which had all the details and parts breakdown, including a very complete wiring diagram of the whole rig as well as the V-1505 Kubota Diesel engine that was in this machine. To make the story short, what we needed was a fuel control solenoid that gets power from the starter solenoid’s field lead (motor terminal) while cranking, and once the motor starts, it gets the power from the ignition switch directly. Replacing the fuel shut-off solenoid with its tricky installation took care of the problem and the machine was ready to go back to work.

Figure-4 The Alternator and Starter Arrangement

The Kubota engine on this rig was equipped with an almost common Denso 18400 (228000-0981) starter and a 12190 (100211-4520) alternator that would require service at times (Figure-4). Thus we informed the owner that we are able to address those issues when the need arises, trying to turn them into future customers. Considering the nearest service dealer for this machine is in St. Louis (180 miles away), the owner was pleased that he got it done locally and promised to keep us in mind for the future. Whether if anything becomes of it or not remains to be seen, but if someone calls me next

Figure-5 Testing 13883 (P-D) with AD-100

Another alternator tested was an 11054 alternator that is used on a 2006 Volvo S-40 with 2.5L engine. The Denso regulator has a Ford 6-G regulator plugin, but it is actually a LIN regulator that only the center terminal of the regulator is used. AD-100 easily detected the protocol (LIN-1) type and the details. As like the above case, increasing and decreasing the setting changed the voltage, and the duty cycle was also shown while there was no FR wire (Blue) connected. The duty cycle is part of the data stream of the LIN communication protocol that was picked up by the AD-100 and was shown. (Figure-6)

Figure-6 Testing 11054 (LIN) with AD-100

I will share more pictures with you as more types of the alternator show up and are tested by the our AD-100 test box. Well, that’s all for this issue. Until I see you again, keep up the good work. SESCO REPORT:

IRS transition relief for small companies offering employer payment plans ends on June 30 Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), employers are no longer allowed to reimburse employees for individually purchased health insurance policies, because they violate the ACA’s market reforms. However, the IRS had issued transition relief for small employers that offered this type of arrangement to provide them with additional time to obtain group health coverage. Small employers should be aware that this transition relief is ending on June 30, 2015. Any small employer that still offers this type of arrangement after June 30 could be subject to an excise tax of $100 per employee per day until the violation is corrected. Since 1961, the IRS had sanctioned the reimbursement by an employer of individually purchased health insurance policies. IRS rules permitted an employer to reimburse employees for premiums paid for individual policies without that reimbursement being included in income. However, the ACA contains certain market reforms that apply to group health plans. Two of the reforms that come into play with respect to employer payment plans are the annual dollar limit prohibition and the preventive services requirements. The IRS provided small employers with transition relief from the $100 per employee per day excise tax. The IRS said it would not assess penalties against a small employer that pays or reimburses its employees for individual health insurance premiums or Medicare Part B or Part D premiums between January 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015.

fewer than 50 full-time employees (including fulltime equivalent employees) during a period of at least six consecutive calendar months, as chosen by the employer, during 2013, for purposes of determining the employer's status in 2014, and during 2014, for purposes of determining the employer’s status in 2015.

New Oregon law will protect employees who ask about or disclose wages Oregon Governor Kate Brown has signed legislation that makes it an unlawful employment practice to discipline an employee who inquires about or discloses wage information, with a limited exception. The measure also provides protection to an employee who makes a charge, files a complaint, or institutes a proceeding stemming from the disclosure of the wage information made by the employee. Where the law is violated, aggrieved employees have the right to a private cause of action. The new law is effective January 1, 2016. Among other things, H.B. 2007 makes it an unlawful employment practice for an employer to "discharge, demote or suspend, or to discriminate or retaliate against, an employee with regard to promotion, compensation or other terms, conditions or privileges of employment" because the employee has: •

For purposes of this temporary relief, a small employer is an entity that employed an average of

Inquired about, discussed or disclosed the employee’s own wages or the wages of another employee; or Made a charge, filed a complaint, or instituted, or caused to be instituted, an investigation, proceeding, hearing, or action based on the wage information disclosure made by the employee.

There is an exception that removes theses protections when employees who have access to employee wage information as part of their job functions disclose employee wages to individuals not authorized to access that information, unless the disclosure is made in response to a charge or complaint or is in furtherance of an investigation, proceeding, hearing, or action, including investigations conducted by the employer. An aggrieved individual may file a civil action in circuit court, which may order injunctive relief and any other equitable relief that may be appropriate, including but not limited to reinstatement or the hiring of employees with or without back pay. Back pay is limited to the two-year period immediately preceding the filing of a complaint with the Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor and Industries, or if a complaint was not filed before the action was commenced, the two-year period immediately preceding the filing of the action. The court may also award the prevailing party costs and reasonable attorney fees at trial and on appeal. Stay tuned to see if additional states follow suit. HOW MANY PEOPLE WORK FOR YOU? by Jim Cathcart As seen in GEARS Magazine  www.gearsmagazine.com

There’s an old joke where a business owner is asked, “How many people work for you?” “About half of them,” he replies. That’s too often true for those of us who lead or employ others. Though they have 100% of the value within them to apply to their jobs, we often only get a small portion of that in actual work. They show up for work, stay all day during their shifts, but never seem to fully commit to getting things done at their best. It’s the old, “look busy, here comes the boss!” mentality. For people like this, the job is just that, a “job.” It’s not their profession or chosen path or calling. It’s simply what they do to earn their pay, so they only do what they have to; seldom more. This also leads to a “Thank God it’s Friday,” and “Oh, Lord it’s Monday” mentality. It’s as if their lives were only lived on the days they weren’t at work. The result is a lingering sadness to their workdays. Inside they’ rethinking, “If only I didn’t have to work.” What a sad scenario! It doesn’t have to be that way. Let’s contrast them with the folks who look forward to each workday. They’re eager to meet new customers and be with their coworkers. They take pride in their craft and seek to give their best to each project. These folks are worth their weight in gold. So what’s the difference? How come some people are real “workers,” while others are simply “day laborers,” no matter how long they’ve been with you? Part of the answer is them and another part is you. As leaders, you and I set the tone for how people look at their work and how they feel about themselves. When we put all of our focus on the cars, the work orders, the bills, the payments, and the billable hours, we create an atmosphere that has very little room for pride and enjoyment. The underlying premise of this kind of work-only ethic is this: The purpose of business is making money. That’s a faulty premise. The purpose of business isn’t making money. That is a byproduct of business. The purpose of the business is to provide the products or services that people value enough that they’re willing to pay for them. Here’s another way to look at it. What’s the purpose of a human body? Is it to produce blood and tissue? Well, blood is to a body as money is to a business: There must be enough of it and it must circulate freely to deliver its value. When the body is operating properly (profitably), blood flows freely and tissues grow and flourish. In a business, the money must flow from customer, to company, to suppliers, to employees, to owners, etc. for the business to grow and serve its customers. But the purpose of a body isn’t the generation and circulation of blood. Nor is the purpose of a business the generation of money. Both blood and money are the byproducts of a healthy operating system. The purpose of your body is to allow you to live your life fully and productively. The purpose of your business is to make other people’s lives better through what you do and to make your own team members’

Peugeot Citroën, as well as companies like Paccar, Inc. and Scania Group from the heavy duty sector. In non-road mobile machinery the show welcomed noted names like Caterpillar, Inc. and John Deere, Inc. Around two-thirds occupies a managerial position and there’s been a sharp rise in Sales Managers attending. Reconfirming the show’s function as a networking platform for the industry, nearly half of all visitors indicated they were attending to meet with existing contacts and to establish new ones, as well as obtaining a general overview of the market.

Largest ReMaTec ever reaffirms a flourishing remanufacturing industry The international remanufacturing industry gathered in RAI Amsterdam this week for the largest edition to date of the industry’s main event, ReMaTec2015. The show is widely recognized as the must-attend event for automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing specialists, attracting visitors from no less than 71 countries. With a strong focus on innovation and education, the show launched its InnovationLAB, showcasing new techniques as well as offering an inspiring theatre program. The exhibition also included a well-attended and comprehensive side events program, ranging from prestigious industry events such as the World Remanufacturing Summit and International Conference on Remanufacturing (ICoR 2015) to a Circular Economy Seminar as well as other industry-related events.

After the sharp rise in 2013, with 3,500 professionals attending the show, the number of visitors has stabilized and a clear shift is seen towards a more international audience. The percentage of international visitors increased from 64 to nearly 70 per cent, with a strong rise in visitors from Central and Eastern Europe, France, Germany and Japan. Combined with a total of 240 exhibitors from 25 countries, the show has become a true representation of the international character of the remanufacturing industry.

Focused audience As remanufacturing becomes more mainstream and its sustainable qualities and role in the circular economy become more evident, an increased percentage of large companies (500+ staff) attended the show. Amongst these large companies many Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM’s) from the automotive industry such as BMW AG, Volkswagen AG and PSA

Remanufacturer of the Year Award goes to Borg Automotive ReMaTecNews, the international news magazine for the automotive and heavy duty remanufacturing industries, has also announced its Remanufacturer of the Year Award for 2015 during the show. The winner of the industry’s most coveted honour is Søren ToftJensen, founder and owner of Borg Automotive, one of Europe’s largest independent remanufacturing company, for his outstanding entrepreneurship in the field of remanufacturing for over close to 40 years.

Vote of confidence “We’re very happy with the large number of new exhibitors joining the show,” says Manager ReMaTec Shows & Publications, Niels Klarenbeek. “It’s a clear — continued on page 11

the job better and cheaper. However, every system that I looked at was either too expensive or did not have the features that we needed. So I decided to create my own," Grueninger added. It turned out that Grueninger found he had a real knack for computer programming, and it didn't take long before he was hooked. Over the next few years, the core-bank project turned into a complete rebuilding-shop management system. When the Internet became popular in the 90s, he extended his computer skills to programming for the web. In 2004, the Electrical Rebuilder's Association came calling. ERA board member, Bob Thomas, had been looking over bids to create an ERA web site and was blown away by how expensive they were. He knew of Grueninger's computer work and asked him to help him look over the bids. The rest is history. Grueninger

took on the project and created the ERA web site for a fraction of the cost of the lowest bid. For the next 11 years, Grueninger was in charge of the ERA web site. In addition to being Web Site Director, he also served as ERA Trade Show Director and Production Manager of The ERA Exchange newspaper. The ERA was so pleased with his work that in 2005 they made Grueninger an Honorary Member and granted him lifetime membership. But life is all about change, and in early 2015 Grueninger felt that it was time to move on. When the APRA asked him to bring his talents to their newest project, he saw a new challenge and welcomed the opportunity. "I'm excited to get started on this project and look forward to working with this wonderful group of people who are dedicated to this industry," Grueninger said.

indication that our market is growing and of the potential for remanufacturing as an industry.” “As a global organization we participate in ReMaTec2015 because it’s a great platform to showcase our innovative products,” says Paul Bliek of ZF Services. “We also use the show to build relationships in the reman industry as well as maintaining our existing ones, and to start a dialogue regarding any future requests and business within the service and reman industries.” “I've been coming now for 10 years and it is so gratifying to see how the show has grown,” said Michael Halston of GFX Corp. “To see the size and scope of ReMaTec today makes me proud to be a part of our industry.” The remanufacturing industry gave the show a clear vote of confidence with over half of the exhibiting companies rebooking their stand for 2017. The next ReMaTec will take place on 18–20 June 2017 at RAI Amsterdam. ReMaTec is the world’s largest remanufacturing show and is supported by the leading trade organizations APRA (Auto Parts Remanufacturers Association) and FIRM (International Association of Engine Rebuilders and Remanufacturers). The main visitor groups are car manufacturers, distributors, importers and remanufacturing firms and their suppliers. Since 2014 Show Management also organizes BigR/ReMaTecUSA in Las Vegas. Both events are organized by RAI Amsterdam.
