Two years later, ABC Network was auditioning new talent. David read and was ollered the job as an ABC New York, News Correspondent. At age 22, Susie and David Garcia were all to New York City. David Lee Writer Producer

Creator

Director

David Lee, a native of Claremont California, received his bachelor's degree in music theory ond theater from the University of Redlands. Go Bulldogs! (or not, like a Music Theory major cores.) I-Je did Mosters work in theater ot Minnesota State University, Mankoto for reasons that totally escope him at the moment. After moving to Los Angeles he pursued a career as on actor. So striking was the impression he made that he was immediately catapulted into looking for other work. I-Je found it proofreading for a script mimeo company where a man named Peter Casey worked as a typist. Day after day the twa typed and praofed TV scripts until finally a light went on: i;;;:;k; "I-Jey, this stuff is terrible. We could do thisl" So they teamed up to try !~~?r~~nC~~tC~lrting. After three and a half years and eleven spec scripts they sold their first script ta The Jeffersons. ~or the next six years they tailed on that show, working their way fram uncredited staff writers to praducers, affectionately knawn araund the set as "those white guys." In 1985 they moved to Cheers as writer/supervising producers. During the four yeors of their stay they introduced Woody, Lillith, Rebecca and Dr. ~rosier Crone, a character who, unbeknownst to them at the time, would loom large in their future. In 1989, with David Angell, another writer they had met on Cheers, they left to form Grub Street Productions. The first series they created, Wings, ron for eight seasons on NBC Their second, ~rosier, ron eleven seasons and has mode television history by winning more tmmy awards than any ather show ... ever. Their third, ~ncore! ~ncore! sleeps with the fishes. Besides directing many episodes of his own series, David has directed severol pilots and was a repeating guest director for herybody Loves Raymond. I-Je has won many and various awards for his work in television including nine tmmys (eighteen nominotions), a Golden Globe, the People's Choice (twice), the Bonff Internotionol Television ~estival "Rockie" (three times), the Viewers for Quality Television Award (three times), the Directors Guild Award, the Television Critic's Award (three times), the British Comedy Award, the I-Jumanitas Prize (twice), and the prestigious Peabody Aword.

The last few years he has been spending his time in the theater, directing critically acclaimed revivals of Light Up the Sky, Do I I-Jear A Waltz?, 110 in the Shade and the LA premiere of Diva at the Pasadena Playhouse, the world premiere of How I Fellin Love at the Williamstown Theater ~estival, and On the Twentieth Century, Assassins, Compo ny, A New Brain, Applause!, Working, ~Iegies and Zorba for Reprise! Still writing too, he co-authored a new book for the Cole Porter musical Can-Can, which he will direct this summer at the Pasadena Playhouse and has just completed the book for a musicol based on the novel Like Water For Chocolate. David is a fierce advocate for and benefactor of progressive causes and the arts. I-Je has been honored by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and the National Gay and Lesbian Task ~orce, who gave him their National Leadership Award in 2004. I-Jis proudest moment in activism was when he found himself, bullhorn in hand, in front of his own studio (Paromount) leading a protest against them producing a television show for Laura Schlesinger. A lifelong visitor to Palm Springs (many were the college afternoons spent poolside at the tl Mirador pretending to be a jet setter but fooling no one), he finolly settled here in 2002, in the former home of Dinah Shore. I-Je shares his time there with Mark Nichols, a noted interior designer in the Coachella Valley, and his two Westies Jordy and Pooch Melba. The latter can often be found digging in the back yard searching for relics of the home's former owner- a Chevrolet hood ornament perhaps, or one of Burt Reynolds wayward toupees. As for himself, he spends time watching lots of TV, hoping against all odds that it will get smarter. though, "There is a brightness control on my set but it doesn't seem to be working."
