Recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, the historical city is a symbol of medieval art. Out of the 85 temples, 22 still exist in all their grandeur. The temples nest artistic sculptures and carvings depicting Kama Sutra. The Kandariya Mahadev Temple, Khajuraho Temples and Lakshmana Temple are a must visit for their archaeological essence. Right in the heart of this country, which gives evidence of its discomfort with expressions of love and intimacy everyday, exist some of the most explicit and eloquent depictions of lovemaking carved in stone. In the midst of a North Indian rural stretch, where infrastructure and other parameters of progress have never quite found their way, stands an airport. Amid the surrounding forests and the dusty village thrive several expensive hotels, cafés doling out pancakes and any amount of foreign tourists. All for one of the more intriguing mysteries of Indian history — what are some of the most acrobatic orgiastic scenes anyone has ever seen doing on ancient Indian temple walls? Khajuraho village hosts a magnificent complex of 25 8th-9th century CE temples built by the Chandela dynasty of kings.

Khajuraho was the first capital of the Chandelas, who rose to rule the region in the 9th century CE and in the 10-14th

centuries were the most powerful rulers of this region. From the onset, Khajuraho was envisaged as a temple town, which accounts for the absence of any non-religious structures other than tanks and lakes. Interestingly, by the 16th century, Khajuraho vanished into forested oblivion and is not even mentioned in the Mughal records. Ever since the ‘discovery’ of Khajuraho by the British engineer TS Burt in the 19th century, the largest group of temples — called the Western Group — has been the most impressive site here.

Western Temples, Khajuraho, Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh 471606, India One of the oldest temples in Khajuraho, Lakshmana Temple is an essential part of the Western Group of temples. Built by a Chandela ruler, Yashovarman, in 930 - 950 CE, the temple is built on a raised platform. With typical medieval Indian architecture, the temple is made of sandstone. The most interesting attribute of the temple is the sanctum which is in the form of a chariot also referred to as the Pancharatha. With over 600 Hindu God residing in the temple, it features all the attributes of Hindu architecture, including a 'Mandapa' and a 'Maha Mandapa'. The entrance of the temple is adorned with numerous carvings of Hindu Gods and artistic, sensual carvings. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the inside of the temple houses a grand image of VaikunthaVishnu from Tibet. The splendid carvings are in the southernmost corner of the temple and make up only for a small portion of the temple. Grand and glorious, the temple is a must visit for its absolute beauty. The enshrined statue at Lakshmana Temple is 4 ft high and has three faces (lion, man and boar). On its base are depictions including marching armies, domestic life, dancers and orgies. The female bracket figures in the temple are exquisite. The façade is decorated with sculptures; the middle panel of which

portrays mithunas or amorous couples. In front of the temple are two smaller shrines, to Devi and Varaha (950 CE). This largerthan-life boar figure is made of a single block of yellow sandstone and is engraved with 627 miniature figures.
