Some of those entering the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia may not realize that within the boundaries of this Kingdom ancient civilizations such as Medina near Tabuk, Thamoud in Ola whose ruins still exist till our present day in a place called Madaen Saleh, and in Najran, south west of the Kingdom, where thousands of other historical sites lie. These historical ruins date back to civilizations that have preceded Islam and some that have existed after the dawn of our great religion. The Kingdom is considered the Qubla of the Muslims all over the world. It is where the last of the prophetic messages have descended more than 1400 years ago. It is home for the two holy mosques found in Makkah and Madinah. It is where the Muslims have embarked from to spread the religion of Islam all over the world.

A Brief Historical View of the Kingdom From Prehistoric Era to modern times, the Kingdom includes thousands of sites that host static historical ruins and transferable ones. The kingdom includes thousands of sites that include sturdy ruins and those that are removable. Such ruins have attracted across the ages thousands of travellers and visitors. They date back to the prehistoric eras all the down to historic eras and Islamic times. These ruins are considered among the most important witness for the history of our ancestors. They reflect the depths of our cultural history and past. The historical sites in the Kingdom are varied and include sites that are listed in UNESCO’s world Heritage list. After the dawn of Islam, the Islamic government constituted a total unity over all the areas of the peninsula, and thus turned it into a true Islamic calling during the era of the prophet. This led to the spread of Islam and Arabism over all territories on most of the earth. During the beginning of the fourth century Hegri (around 19th century A.D.) King Abdul Aziz Bin Abdul Rahman AL Saoud united the regions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and thus established the modern Saudi government that reigned over all the lands belonging to the Arabic peninsula.

Eastern Province Dareen Islands Here you can embark on a trip into the past through the unique old buildings and the ancient fishing port that is facing the historical fortress of Dareen. This port is one of the oldest ports in the world dating back to more than 5000 years. There you can enjoy the beautiful aquatic pictures represented by several old fishing boats. Absolutely a picture is perfect right there.

Saudi Aramco Exhibit It allows you to sail into the history of oil extraction and excavation. You will see a documentary about the history of oil extraction. Make sure you do not forget to take a souvenir from the reception desk in the exhibition.

Al Ahsa Province

The name Al-Ahsaa is derived from a very special characteristic of the area. It goes back to the numerous Hasee or springs

found in the area. These are natural water springs that are internationally renowned such as: Al Jawharya spring at the Bataliya village, Umm Sab’a at the Kareen village, Al Khodoud at Houfouf, Al Harah at Palmers, etc… This in its turn led to the flourishing of agricultural activities. Besides palm trees, other crop planting exist such as Hissawee rice planting. Tourism also flourished because of the sulfur springs and the fresh atmosphere. Whether you are a writer or scholar or theatrical artist, a photographer or a scientist heading to the Al-Ahsaa, you will see impressive science centers, such as the League of King Faisal, the Technical College of Sharia, the Literary Club and the Association of Culture and Art. This market was built between is around 13 km away from Al Houfouf area and has several characteristics such as its easy-to-climb top and its unique view that overlooks a major part of the agricultural oasis and its caves that are cold during summer and warm during winter, and is distinguished by its wonderful rocky composition. Makkah The city of Makkah is the holy capital of the Islamic world where millions of pilgrims come annually from all continents of the world. Administratively, Makkah consists of a number of major cities: the city of Makkah (Holy capital), and Jeddah, and Al Taif. The Kaaba, the Holy Mosque, the Qublat of the Muslims, and the shrine of Prophet Ibrahim, and the stone of his son Prophet Ismail are all found in Makkah. It is also where the last messenger of God, Prophet Mohammad, peace be upon him, was born. Makkah includes holy sites (Mina, Arafat, Muzdalifa), University of Umm Al-Qura and the headquarters of the Organization of Islamic Conference. It is customary for the people of Makkah to hold what is commonly called “Al Shaabanah”. During the last days of the month of Shaaban, they increase their “Qaylat” or trips to the suburbs of Makkah. They form groups and hold banquets with different types of food. They spend their days and nights in the hills and forget the troubles of life. The most famous dishes are Fava beans, Al Maasoub, Al Bamshour, Al Zarbian, rice with chickpeas, Sambousek, and deserts such as Tabtaab, Al Lukaymaat, Kinafah, Baklawa, Mouhalabbiya, rice with yoghurt, Almssiya, Labaniya, Zalabiya, and many other delicious dishes. Diverse and marvelous restaurants are widespread all over Makkah offering many dishes and traditional plates.

Restaurants and shops surrounding Gracious Makkah operate on a 24 hour basis. The popular markets are considered the ideal place to shop for handcrafts, traditional artifacts, spices, and natural Henna products that are remarkably cheaper than those found in other markets in the Kingdom.

Grand Mosque It presides on top of the priority list of those visiting Makkah. Its holiness doesn’t allow the onlooker to remove his eyes from the Kaaba which was built by Ibrahim and his son Ismail. The Grand mosque contains the Kaaba and the Masaa, and the holy grave of the Prophet Ibrahim, and Zamzam Well.

Factory for manufacturing the shrine that covers Kaaba The Kaaba cover or shrine is weaved from pure silk and dyed black, and the factory where it is made is available to anyone who wants to visit. Ain Zubaida It is a very important historical location that was established by lady Zubaida, wife of the caliph Haroun Al Rasheed in the year 186 Hegira, after she realized the dire consequences resulting from the scarcity of water experienced by the pilgrims. It is comprised of a group of water fountains that represent the ingenuity of Islamic architecture and execution.

Palace Saqqaf King Abdul Aziz used the palace in Makkah. A large palace consisting of two floors and is located in the neighborhood of El Maabda in the city center and illustrates the building model of Islamic architecture and includes many collections of Islamic art. Covering an area of nine thousand square meters, it is located northeast of the palace and is in the form of a tower.

Diverse Options Recently Makkah witnessed the rise of several luxurious hotels that meet the requirements of visitors and shoppers crowded the area surrounding the Kaaba through many mega projects that when completed will mark a huge developmental leap. Several recreational areas for children have mushroomed around Makkah such as Hokair center, Badra center, and the Happy Child Center in Rasayfa.

Ghar Hiraa The place where revelation for the first time befell Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. It is located in the Al Nour Mountain, which witnessed one of the greatest moments of revelation from

Jeddah Diverse cultures united within one spirit, Jeddah, that city which doesn’t sleep or closes its doors, is located on the shores of the Red Sea and is nicknamed the bride of the Red Sea. It forms the port and main gate for Mecca, and is adorned with a special stamp and Arabic identity. Jeddah’s rise as a city dates back to 3000 years, where it was founded by a group of fishermen who used to rest on its shores after their long arduous fishing trips. What distinguishes Jeddah mostly is that it is visited by tourists all year long both from within the Kingdom and from the outside. Both its international airport and port are considered among the most active globally. Jeddah hosts several hotels and cultural centers as well as residential compounds which are considered a touristic attraction by themselves.

Discover Jeddah

Jeddah is famous for its popular dishes such as Sayyadiya, a famous Jeddah dish made out of rice and fish. Al Makadim is another famous traditional dish and it is made out of lamb limbs and brown bread. Other dishes include Kabida, Sahlab, Baleela, Manto, Farmouza, Youghmush, and last but not least the delicious Aysh with meat. All of these dishes have one thing in common: they are all made up of dough stuffed with minced meat and are steam or oven cooked. Jeddah is distinguished by the way it engulfs many festivals and activities all

year long. This has fast become a trade mark to Jeddah. The most prominent of these festivals is the annual summer festival, Jeddah Ghair, Jeddah’s Economic Forum, Formula 2000 race, Life and Energy Forum, and the famous Mirsaal Village Touristic festivals. The shores of Jeddah are renowned for its coral reefs that lie underneath the waters of the Red Sea. The coral reefs are found at different depths. Some reefs, that are located around 100 to 150 meters away from the sea shore, may reach 50 meters in depth.

City Center It is actually the heart of Jeddah city and its historical center as well. It hosts the commercial markets such as Cornish market, Mahmal market, and Al Faysaliya markets. It includes also Al Bay’a field, The Ministry for External Affairs, and AL Ahli commercial bank. It forms a distinctive feature in Jeddah and is definitely worth visiting. The famous ancient traditions are exhibited through attires and merchandize are displayed among traditional aromatic dishes. As for the Hijazi expressions, they are considered aesthetic touches that are additions found for your further enjoyment of the trip. Jeddah Khouzami plant in the neighborhood. Construction of the palace started in 1928 and was completed in 1932. This building was the first in Jeddah to be built using cement and iron metal. Al Taif Al Taif is located on the peaks of Shifa and Hida mountains making it the primary resort for the people of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States due to its moderate temperature in summer. Al Taif is renowned for its rose planning which is harvested during the months of April and May and used to manufacture rose water and other condensed oils extracted from roses. Some visitors can drop in and view how these manufacturing processes are carried out in factories. Shubra Palace The palace dates back to the early twentieth century. The building is built by engineers and craftsmen using Italian materials and marble fetched from Turkey and Italy. The palace is famous for its beautiful gardens, stunning scenery, which is based on the four Europeanstyle apartments located on each side. It was opened as a museum for the region. The museum opens for three months in the summer only. Around 300 people visit the museum every month mostly citizens of the Gulf States.

Al Jouf is the country of original olive oil. Around 13 million olive trees are planted there. The area boasts 16 olive oil factories. The oasis encompasses hundreds of famous historical sites. Al Jouf has important historical significance, it lies on the commercial road between the Arab peninsula, Damascus road, and Egypt. It still occupies a fundamental status as a city on the borders of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It has the Hadeetha exit, one of the largest exits of the Kingdom. The Al Jouf area has a natural free reserve that includes rare animals such as deer, wild cats, wild rabbits, wolves, foxes and hyenas. In Ain Hawas you are met with a marvelous view of sulfuric water. All its water is gathered in a natural pond where an oasis is formed around it. Some of its water is used to irrigate the farms. The source of the water is covered with stone so as to preserve it.

Omar Bin Al Khattab Mosque It is located in Domat Al Jandal and is named after Omar Bin Al Khattab, since it was built upon his return in 17 Hegri from conquering Beit Al Makdiss. It was renovated several times. The mosque was built from carved stone and mud. Its

Al Jouf ceiling is made out of wood and Jreed. Its area is around 600 meters squared.

Zo’bol Fortress It is a fortress of sand stones and mud with an area of around 5600 meters squared. The fortress is called Zo’bol palace and stands on the hills of Sakaka. It is comprised of four towers and a huge water tank.

Al Jouf museum for Popular Heritage It is a modern construction which is around 3600 meters squared and falls in the middle of Domat Al Jandal next to the historical area. It includes numerous historical monuments that reveal a big part of the civilization of the Al Jouf area.

Al Rajajeel ruins They are composed of stone columns built on a sand surface with an area of 120,000 meters squared. It has a semi circular shape and falls 22 km south of Sakaka, next to the village of Kara. The

Sawwan stones found there are used to make stone tools. Stone engravings are apparent on the columns. These columns date back to around 4000 B.C.

Mared Fortress It is an important fortress that was constructed out of stone on a high land that overlooks the city of Domat Al Jandal. It is around 600 meters high and occupies around 2500 meters squared. It is thought to have been built during the first or third century after Christ. It has an oval shape and is comprised of a wall that surrounds it and has observation openings. It has four towers, each is around 12 meters high. It has two deep wells. As for the main building of the fortress it is comprised of two huge stories that include a number of rooms occupied by the guards.

Kaf This area represents a substantial historical and monumental value. In the past it was used to cradle the villages and was the border check point between Saudi Arabia and Jordan. It is famous for its springs and its farms that are spread along the gardens and the palm trees. Kaf also hosts its own fortress that is built out of stone and is situated next to the city.

Al Qassim

If you want a deep touristic experience mixed with heritage of the region and the crafts of traditional and environment of the desert, then you have to come to Al Qassim, which is the garden of the desert, and the green oasis that is characterized by an abundance of water and the purity of the soil. It is a magnet for migration of tribal people from different parts of the Arabian Peninsula and is characterized by its traders people. Buraidah is the major city and the administrative capital of the region. Located at the intersection of Al Qassim, there are a number of old pilgrim routes coming from Kufa, Basra and Kuwait to Makkah. Held in the Al Qassim are numerous festivals that are diverse but unified under one theme: to spread the joy and happiness through the region. These

festivals also represent cultural and entertainment seasons. These festivals are a major economic income and they are crucial for the development of the area. Among the most famous festivals are: The National festival for dates and palms, Summer festivals, Spring festivals, Al Kelija festivals, and Popular Products festival. There are also colorful traditional industry doors made of Tamarisk wood and are decorated with paintings and inscriptions of multiple colors. Al Qassim is also famous for a group of crafts that have survived despite the dawn of modern crafts. The most famous among such crafts is: pottery making, rope weaving, silk weaving, and manufacturing products from Al Khaws.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz was born in Riyadh in 1343 Hegira (1924 A.D.). He pledged allegiance on the 26th of June, 2005 in succession of King Fahd Bin Abdulla Aziz. In addition to being king of the state, he also occupies the position of prime minister, in accordance with the legislative laws that require the king to act as prime minister. Weekend: Thursday and Friday. Financial transactions: The currency of the Kingdom is the Saudi riyal, which is covered with gold and convertible into foreign currencies equal to 100 Oneness and denominations are: Paper: five Riyals, ten Riyals, one hundred Riyals, to hundred Riyals and five hundred Riyals. Metal: one Riyal, fifty halala, twenty five halala, ten halala, and five halala. The U.S. dollar is equivalent to 3.75 Riyals Credit cards are being used in all malls and shopping centers such as Visa, Master card, American Express, and ATMs are available on a large scale in the cities of the Kingdom.

All regions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are in one time zone, which is three hours after Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) +3 .

Clothing: Clothes in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are known for modesty. All men in KSA and most countries of the Arabian Gulf wear the Arabian dress with Al-ghotra, Al-shemagh and Al-ikal. While the women wear black gowns over their clothing and the veil (the face cover). Shopping: There are two types of markets in the Kingdom: 1 – Public traditional markets. 2 - Modern markets. the popular markets exist in all parts of the Kingdom, and are featured for their reflection of diverse cultures through patterns of architectural and product

marketing, and these markets are: Zol market downtown Riyadh, Najran Popular Market, Tuesday market in Aseer, Buraida popular market, Tuesday market in Al-Baha, Caisariyya market in Al-Hafouf. Usually, the buyers negotiate with the seller in the popular markets to reduce the price. In the commercial market (malls) that are spread in all major cities, you can find the best-known brands of various commodities sold at competitive prices (often un-negotiable). In addition to souvenirs, gifts, hardware and some tools, clothes, jewelry, perfumes, especially that there is no sales tax or value-added tax on goods that are sold in retail shops and shops open for long hours, In many cases, for a period of seven days a week knowing that that it is closed temporarily during the prayers. Mostly all consuming commercial shops open from eight in the morning till twelve o’clock at night.

Photography in public places: Tourists are allowed to capture photos in public places; based on a special

regulation for shooting in public places and tourist areas, which allows taking pictures in any public place where there isn’t any plate that refers to the prevention of photography, where capturing photos is not allowed in places that have such plates.

Electrical Current: Electricity supply in Saudi cities is either 110 or 220 volts, and it is recommended that you use instruments that insure the stability of electricity to protect electrical voltage devices and computers from variation of power.

Transportation: Modern transportation is available in the Kingdom where transportation network covers all parts of the Kingdom, and taxis are available (limousine) was widely used in major cities, especially at airports and commercial markets.
