Letter from the Director The 2011-2012 fiscal year was a time of reformation for the Marshall District Library. The Marshall District Library has continued to provide the quality services and programming that our residents have come to expect while expanding our partnerships in the Marshall community. Dedicated to becoming a lifelong learning center for the Marshall area, we invite all of our visitors to explore, discover and grow through our collections, programs and services. We appreciate the support of all of our district members: Eckford, Fredonia, Marengo and Marshall townships and the City of Marshall. The last year was full of opportunities for the library to help our visitors with their informational and recreational learning needs. We have more than doubled our technology training, providing classes and instructional sessions in basic computer skills as well as tablets, e-readers, and smartphones. With the support of the Marshall Community Foundation, we were able to complete the digitization of our newspaper microfilm collection which allows users to do a computer search through newspapers from 1837-2011 from the Marshall area. We have rearranged our facility and collection to better serve different age groups and interest areas, including the development of an early literacy space and a local history space. Our wonderful Public Services staff developed the after school AMAZE program that has created daily engagement activities for our student visitors in conjunction with local businesses. This program was supported by the Marshall Community Foundation YACkers and the Community Foundational Alliance of Calhoun County. We always welcome feedback on how we can better serve our community. Highlights 2012

Installed library security system and video surveillance system Completed digitization of our microfilm newspaper collection from 1837-2011 with the support of a grant from Marshall Community Foundation Held daily after school activities for students in grades 6-8 including crafts, parties, book clubs, movies, and Spanish lessons Developed the after school AMAZE program which work with Estilo Dance Studio, Shinshinkan KarateDo, Great Escape Stage Company, The Community Music School and other groups. This program is supported by Marshall Community Foundation YACkers and Community Foundation Alliance of Calhoun County. Replaced library HVAC units and retrofitted light fixtures for energy efficiency Subscribed to additional online content with Ancestry Library Edition and Britannica Online Participated in a number of community events including the Marshall Christmas Parade, Calhoun County Fair, Calhoun County Senior Health Fair, Downtown Retail Open House and Home Tour Weekend Installed two new scanners for the public computers with support from Eaton Corporation. Continued to partner with EastEnd Studio and Gallery to support the After School Arts Apprenticeship Program Continued to partner with Marshall Community Credit Union to provide financial education seminars Developed a separated early literacy space in our youth area for our youngest visitors Developed a separated local history and genealogy research space in our adult collection area Adult programs included working with local businesses and individuals to learn about topics such as Medicare counseling, baseball card collecting, car care, dream interpretation, perennials, Grand Traverse Lighthouse, maple syrup, gluten-free living and war dogs. Painted the building interior and exterior Installed outdoor lighting in garden area thanks to the generosity of the Marshall Area Garden Club Contributed television content to local channel MPACT Celebrated our annual Summer Reading Program for all ages with the theme of “Dream Big– Read!” Celebrated our annual Winter Reading Club for all ages with the theme of “Go Green @ Your Library!“ Celebrated our annual Amnesty Week, National Library Week, and Banned Books Week with various activities and displays Held our annual Donor/Volunteer reception to recognize the many businesses, groups and individuals that support the library Continued to provide services such as test proctoring, notary services, and genealogy research assistance to the community
