HELEN GLEESON and OLEG LAVERNTOVICH

Welcome to the new style of Liquid Crystals Today, the newsletter of the International Liquid Crystal Society. Although previous issues are available on the web, this is the first issue that is fully web-based. The change presents us with many new opportunities to communicate with one-another. As you will notice from the article on adaptive optics in this issue, we can now publish movies and there is no restriction to the number of colour pictures that can be included. We can also include links in articles to other websites which provide more information. We hope that you will respond to the opportunities provided by this new style of newsletter with articles, book reviews, conference reports and any other items of interest that you feel should be better communicated. The delay in publishing this issue of Liquid Crystals Today requires some explanation and an apology. The design and format of the new, web-based newsletter took longer than was expected. Consequently, although we had hoped to have the first issue ready for publication in August last year, it is only now that we are ready to 'go to press'. We do expect that our future issues will revert to the previous pattern of four per year, and hope to update items such as situations vacant and meetings announcements more regularly than that. We would like to thank the previous editorial board, who put so much effort into making Liquid Crystals Today an informative and interesting newsletter for the society over the past 10 years. Their activities have helped to consolidate the society as a truly international body. As a result of changing the style of the newsletter, the membership of the editorial board has now also changed, though we are lucky to have some of the 'old' members remaining active to give continuity and the benefit of their experience. The editorial board details can be found in the Society News section. In establishing new board membership, we have tried to make sure that most areas of the world are represented, but we still need more representation from the Far East and are working at this. We have also tried to ensure that the various disciplines encompassed by 'liquid crystals' are represented. Please feel free to contact any member of the board, or either of us, if you have ideas for articles for the newsletter. Articles can be submitted either electronically (which is preferred), or as hard copy. We look forward to hearing from you!
