I enjoyed the combination of adventure mixed with the magic of fairy tales. There are encounters with dangerous fairies, tricky dwarves, and ferocious unicorns. The villains are all satisfyingly scary but colorful enough to keep them enjoyable. The author incorporates various fairy tale elements into hero’s bag of tricks – for example - a rapunzel hair which turns into a rope.

This book is a swashbuckling adventure as a brother seeks to find a cure for his brother’s illness. It takes place in the world behind the mirror, which is a fairytale world where people live side by side with dwarves and fairies and elves. The author adds emotional depth to this tale as our hero’s sidekick (a shapeshifting fox) discovers why she hasn’t left our hero yet, and the brother’s girlfriend a medical student must remember her love for him in spite of the transformation his illness brings to him. In terms of sexual content, there are several kisses – one by his love to rescue the ill brother, and another by our hero mistakenly kissing his brother’s love after drinking a potion, and finally there is an implied sexual relationship as our hero spends the night with the red fairy. Miranda, the red fairy, had kept our hero with her for a year, and he returns to her for a night to get from her the information on how to remove the curse her sister has laid on his brother.
