XUK English is based at St Joseph’s College in Ipswich, an amazing venue only an hour from central London. As well as being conveniently situated, the school also boasts fantastic facilities - interactive technology, fully equipped sports hall, dance studio, high spec art room, computer suites and much, much more...

Improving English Everything we do is focused on improving your child’s English while they have a great time. Our lessons are taught by specialist, well-qualified teachers in small classes. We also ensure that all our trips and activities provide a great opportunity to improve vocabulary and knowledge of the language.

Morning Lessons At XUK English, each child has 15 hours of lessons per week. Our class sizes average between 6 and 8 students (maximum 12).

Our lessons focus on ‘learning through doing’ and our experienced staff are passionate about delivering interesting and motivating lessons. We follow a competency-based syllabus reflecting the Common European Framework and encourage our teachers to use interactive activities in the classroom.

Optional Afternoon Classes (supplement) If you would like your child to benefit from additional teaching, you can choose to book afternoon Intensive English Classes (6 hours per week). These are small discussion groups designed to help students develop their spoken fluency and listening skills. We also offer one-to-one lessons (4 hours per week), where we will focus on your child’s individual requirements, including exam preparation for Cambridge exams.

Cambridge Our day trip to Cambridge includes a tour of the famous colleges to learn about the past, present and future of this historic university town. There is time to relax in one of Cambridge’s beautiful parks, enjoy a punting trip on the River Cam, and go shopping in the open-air market!

Study Trips Each week we go on a study trip to a town of cultural significance: Ipswich one of England’s oldest towns, and home to an amazing weekend market is within walking distance. The traditional market town of Bury St Edmunds and Colchester, the ancient Roman capital, are also nearby.

Getting there Just over an hour by train from the heart of London, and about an hour from Stansted Airport, XUK English is easy to reach. We can arrange for your child to be picked up and dropped off from London airports or the Eurostar terminal. Flights must arrive between 12:00 and 14:00 and depart between 14:00 and 16:00. Trains to / from St Pancras must arrive at 12:30 and depart at 15:01. Transport outside these times may incur extra charges. Alternatively, we can pick your child up from our meeting point in Finchley, North London.

Sleeping We have two boarding houses, the Mews and Goldrood. Rooms are allocated according to gender and age. Furthermore we mix nationalities whilst trying to keep friends together. In addition, the Mews has some private rooms. On arrival at summer school each child will be introduced to their pastoral

leader, to whom they can go at any time for support and advice.

Language Staff

Activity and Pastoral Staff

We are extremely diligent in the recruitment of our language staff. We look for a combination of qualifications, experience teaching children of particular nationalities, ages and abilities, as well as bundles of enthusiam.

Our thorough recruitment process ensures a high quality activity team. Their main objective is to guarantee your child gets as much as possible from their afternoons and evenings with us. We have a mixture of sports and arts specialists, pastoral carers, nurses and others.

Our Director of Studies (DoS) is DELTA qualified and has signifcant experience. She takes an active role overseeing all the teachers and children at XUK English as well as ensuring our teaching methods and syllabus remain challenging, engaging and relevant.

Advanced

Children can join XUK English for anywhere between 1 and 4 weeks. To guarantee your booking, all we need is a £50 deposit per week. The balance is due on or before 1 May.

Alberto came back to XUK English this year for a second summer. He loved XUK English because of the friendly, family feel of the camp. His English is very advanced and in 2012 he wanted to concentrate on consolidating his grammatical knowledge in order to improve his fluency. Alberto left XUK English with a big smile on his face having achieved his objectives.

Marie arrived at XUK English from Latvia with almost no understanding of the English language. She was quite a shy girl but made friends very quickly with some girls from France and Germany. By the end of her 4 weeks at XUK English, Marie’s understanding, speaking and writing had made significant progress. She could confidently hold a conversation in English with a natural accent.
