Dear Teachers, Once again Macmillan ELT is delighted to invite you to the training highlight of the year – the Macmillan Teachers’ Day, which will take place at the Hotel AC Córdoba Palacio in Córdoba on Thursday 16th May 2013.

Macmillan Teachers’ Day Córdoba

th Thursday 16 May 2013

At the Macmillan Teachers’ Day our principal aim is to offer practical training workshops that reflect the reality of today’s classrooms so that you can keep up to date with the latest in pedagogical practice. You will take away with you ideas and activities you can use in your school the next day. As always, the Macmillan team will be there to give you a warm welcome, present our new materials and answer any queries you have. As the Macmillan Teachers’ Day is extremely popular, we encourage you to reserve your place as soon as possible. To make registration easier, we have an online registration process. You can reserve your place by visiting Events on the Macmillan website (see below) and submitting the online registration form. Once you have registered you will receive an email confirmation.

Using phonics in the classroom (3 to 7-year-olds)

Have you got rhythm? (5 to 8-year-olds)

We will be looking at songs, chants and phonics from coursebooks, adding actions and other special touches that will help them work in the classroom. Be prepared to sing along and join in! Steven McGuire

How to plan effective and engaging lessons (8 to 12-year-olds)

This session will provide teachers with a framework to plan successful, motivating English lessons that offer pupils an opportunity to engage with the language and be more actively involved in the lesson. In this session, we will introduce ways to give your classes structure and meaning for both pupil and teacher. Teachers will find ways to ‘notice’ language, that is, exploit small chunks of language for lots of meaningful practice. As a result, pupils will be more motivated and teachers more confident. Emma Thomas

Blending science with arts & crafts (6 to 12-year-olds)

This session looks at creating links between arts & crafts and science to enable teachers to plan their art lessons incorporating science content. Teachers will engage in practical activities whilst assessing how to practise and recycle science vocabulary through an artistic context, using new techniques and resources.

Frameworks for speaking at Bachillerato: the control continuum (Bachillerato)

Many Bachillerato students still fail to speak with confidence, something which is all the more important for those students who want to take part in Proyectos Integrados in English, prepare for external exams and will become far more important as we move towards a new emphasis on oral production once the reforma becomes a reality. The session will look at a series of activity frameworks for supporting spoken output and increasing student confidence when speaking. Elspeth Pollock

Grammar – the ‘old’ and the ‘new’! (ESO & Bachillerato)

Ten practical presentation ideas for five grammar areas we often have to teach. Firstly a reminder of some of the ‘old’ but still successful ideas for presenting grammar, then a ‘new’ way to teach them, using video clips, websites and IWBs.
