th 13 Wednesday 10 April 20

At the Macmillan Teachers’ Day our principal aim is to offer you practical training workshops that are designed to reflect current teaching contexts, enabling you to keep up-to-date with the latest innovations. You will take away with you sound activities and ideas that you can use directly in your classrooms. The Macmillan team will be there to give you a warm welcome and will present our materials. As the Macmillan Teachers’ Day is extremely popular, we encourage you to reserve your place as soon as possible. To make registration easier, we have an online registration process. You can reserve your place by visiting Events on the Macmillan website (see below) and submitting the online registration form. Once you have registered, you will receive an email confirmation. Sessions Using phonics in the classroom

Emma Thomas

Together everyone achieves more!

(3 to 7 year-olds)

(ESO & Bachillerato)

Do you use phonics in your class or are you planning to? Find out what you can do after the children know their letters and sounds. How to introduce fun phonic activities into your planning (whatever phonics system you use) and high frequency word games. In the session we will also learn about segmenting, blending and preparing the children to read and write.

Language learning requires many forms of interaction in which communication and collaboration with others is essential. By engaging in collaborative learning, students not only get to interact with others on a common task, but they also get to pool and capitalize on one another’s knowledge and skills. Collaborative learning techniques can help us build teams and contribute to a necessary positive learning environment in which learners can thrive to become confident learners, language learners and individuals. In this session, a range of collaborative learning techniques to create a positive learning environment will be demonstrated.

Jeanette Corbett

Learning through puzzles and language patterns (8 to 12 year olds)

Children are very observant and they like puzzles and problem solving. Language can be viewed as a puzzle where children have to spot patterns to understand how a language works. In this session, we will look at different stimulating activities, using flashcards, posters, dossiers and coursebooks that give children opportunities to notice language patterns. You can use them to present, practise and remember language in the classroom. Children will enjoy them while learning and want to play again and again!

Fiona Mauchline A question of confidence

(ESO & Bachillerato)

We all know that confidence is a key factor in successful language learning, and ‘I can’ has become ubiquitous as a catch phrase in recent years, but how easy is it to get teens to realise that it’s true, they can? In this workshop, we’ll try out a simple, five-stage lesson ‘skeleton’ which uses integrated skills to maximum effect with ESO students - then hopefully you’ll not only put words in their mouth but a smile on their face.
