Telling stories is an excellent way to involve and engage the interest of children, and an unsurpassable tool for presenting and practising everything from intonation patterns and lexis to effective language-learning strategies. Using some Macmillan children’s stories, a range of useful techniques for getting the most out of your listeners will be demonstrated, together with practical ideas for carrying out story related activities.

From story to creative art and crafts (8 to 9-year-olds)
Cross curricular connections between English literature and art can provide a perfect vehicle for creative, exciting classes which pupils can enjoy. Using some classic children’s storybooks as a springboard, I hope to demonstrate a range of ideas and hands-on activities which will help our pupils develop an appreciation of art and creativity while also learning a language.

Motivating pupils in Years 5 and 6 can be challenging. These pupils are no longer young children, and they’re not yet teenagers. In this session, we will look at how the use of authentic material can help motivate these pupils. We will look at classroom activities that exploit the use of authentic materials, including ‘real’ stories, songs and conversations.

In this practical workshop we will look at a range of classroom activities inspired by clips from film, TV and YouTube. These activities focus on a variety of language areas and skills, and can be adapted to use with many other clips. Most importantly, students seem to enjoy them!

These are some ideas designed to get students using their spoken language skills in a more relaxed and creative way. We’ll be telling and listening to lots of interesting stories. Because this kind of ‘real’ conversation can be unpredictable, we’ll also be looking at how to exploit their chats for our language-learning purposes.
