Magic Squares for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Purpose: This vocabulary strategy will help students to have fun while matching the words with their definitions from chapter 5 of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Magic Squares is a box with an arrangement of numbers that can be added in any direction (across, down or diagonally) that will always add up to the same number, if the students answer correctly. Objective: Students will be able to accurately match the words with their definitions as they try to solve the magic squares and figure out the secret number. Directions: The student activity sheet has two columns: one for words from chapter 5 and one for the definitions to those words. Students are to match the words with their definitions. After which they are to place the number in the magic square box with the letter that corresponds. After the students have filled in all the boxes, they are to add up the totals to see if the number is equal in all the boxes. If done correctly, the number should be the same. This is known as the magic number and should be placed on the “magic number” line. Match each word with its definition. Place the number of the definition inside the box with the correct letter. After you have finished, the total of the numbers in the boxes should be the same (across the rows, down each column and diagonally). Add up several of the rows to see what the “magic number” is, then place the “magic number” in the “magic number” line. A. Turret B. Wrathful C. Lurch D. Pummel E. Accompany F. Swig G. Cavernous H.
