Make Your Own Ditty Bag & Introduction to Basic Sail Repair 5-day (40 Hour) Course CDN$600/person Personal Palm required, all other materials will be provided In this course you will hand stitch your own Ditty Bag, while learning the essentials of traditional sail making and repair. All materials are included; all you need to bring is your own palm. The course will also introduce you to traditional handwork and machine stitching techniques that will allow you to do sail repairs at sea, on the dock, or at home. We will be discussing the items you will need to carry on board to do repairs at sea and get your Ditty Bag ready for your next voyage. We will also discuss sewing machines and basic stitching techniques. The course will cover the following topics: Hand stitching your own canvas ditty bag Introduction to sail repair The sail making process: from measuring, lofting, machine work, to finishing Tools of the trade Materials: sail cloth, rope, hardware, thread, Sewing Machines Handwork Knots, splices, whippings Inspecting your sails for wear and tear Corners, fittings, rattailing, roping, cringles, reefs Repair Kits/Ditty Bags Ordering and Supplies Sail Care-stowing, maintenance, inspection We will be using the following book for reference: The Sailmaker’s Apprentice, by Emiliano Marino.
