OH SAY CAN YOU SEE........ “GREEN BAY”

March is upon us and that can mean many things to different people. The change of weather and the farewell to another winter. The anticipation of spring break and upcoming vacation. Or for the third consecutive year, the excitement of March madness basketball and the trip to Green Bay to the WIAA girl state basketball tournament for the Lady Eagles team. For a majority of you, by the time you read this the fate of Thursday's game will have been decided. Hopefully a championship game will

be in the plans for Saturday. Whether or not you are a basketball fan, one thing is for sure that in a small community like Barneveld you cannot be more proud of the accomplishments by the student athletes, coaches, the pep band, dance team and fans for their hard work and dedication to get to this point of competition. The Lady Eagles have had a dominating season through conference and tournament play. Coach Jim Myers (Wisconsin’s all time win-

ningest high school girls basketball coach) and his coaching crew, along with the varsity and JV have strived for excellence all season. Even in games of domination, they have all made sure they got all of their plays right and not to sit back in complacency and be anything less than perfect. This is what separates great teams from good teams. I know it has been said before, but we are so grateful in Barneveld the students that walk the school halls, all the way from pre-K-12, all

can share in the excitement of March madness. Congratulations to the girls basketball team and good luck with the tournament. Also good luck to the Barneveld pep band and the Barneveld dance team. All of you make us proud! All fans and spectators, have a safe trip to Green Bay and enjoy the ride! Thursday's game can be seen on WKOW channel 27 at 1:15 PM.

March 10 Groundbreaking Is The Next Step Towards The Barneveld Public Library Expansion

With $600,000 contribution from the Walter A. and Dorothy Jones Frautschi Charitable Fund and land gifted by the Ray Osborn family as foundation, community raises nearly $800,000 to fund project BARNEVELD, Wis. A community groundbreaking ceremony for the Barneveld Public Library expansion took place Tuesday, March 10 at noon. In 2013 Jerry and John Frautschi pledged $600,000 toward the library’s expansion project, in honor of their mother’s deep ties to the Barneveld community. Dorothy Jones Frautschi was a Barneveld native whose family’s roots in the community extend several generations. “This gift is made from the Walter A. & Dorothy Jones Frautschi Charitable Fund,” Jerry Frautschi said. “Dorothy Frautschi was the daughter of Jerome Jones and was raised in Barneveld. Jerome Jones founded the Barneveld State Bank in 1898 and with his wife, Amelia, were major supporters of this Iowa County community. We, John &

Jerry Frautschi, grandsons of Jerome and Amelia, are very pleased that the new library will be recognized as a tribute to our grandparents.” In making the $600,000 pledge, the brothers stipulated that ground be broken on the new building by March 2015 and that a plaque honoring the Jones family be displayed on the building’s exterior when completed. The current library serves its patrons in just 1,600 square feet of a 3,500-square foot building. When completed, the expansion with create a 5400-square-foot, first-floor space for the library in a building that totals 8,600 square feet, said Carrie Portz, director of the Barneveld Public Library. The lower level will continue to serve the community’s 4K education program with new community rooms, stor-

age and bathrooms comprising the remainder of the lower level. “We are so pleased and proud to have reached this point in the process,” said Carrie Portz, director of the Barneveld Public Library, “and so grateful to the Frautschi brothers for recognizing the need and choosing to honor their mother and grandparents in this manner and to the Osborn family for their generous commitment to the Barneveld community.” In 1959 the Ray Osborn family donated a building at the current location for use as a library. Just prior to the now infamous 1984 tornado the Village received a grant for the construction of a new library. The library was under construction when the tornado struck and like most of the rest of the village, it was destroyed. Construction began anew

after the tornado and the library was completed in 1985. As plans for the library expansion were being developed in 2012, the Osborn family officially transferred ownership of the property to the Village, making expansion possible. MSA Professional Services and Joe Daniels Construction are the architect and general contractor for the project. Located 25 miles southwest of Madison at the intersection of Highway 18/151 and County Highway ID, the village of Barneveld supports a population of just under 1100. The Barneveld Public Library, located at 107 W. Orbison St. serves approximately MANY patrons annually. More information is available at www.barneveldpubliclibrary. org.

NATURALLY SPEAKING By Jerry Davis

The common redpoll is an uncommon, interesting bird seen occasionally in southern Wisconsin. It comes to see us when food in the north is scarce. This bird gets its name from the red mark on its head. There are slight differences between the males and females, including a dusting of reddish feathers on the male’s breast. Most times we would expect to see redpolls feeding on tiny birch seeds in the fruit catkins of white birches. Sometimes the birds knock the seeds out and then feed on them below the tree. They are quite tame while engaging in their feeding activity. How does a tiny bird that eats tiny seeds stay warm all night? It has an esophageal diverticulum that acts as a seed storage container. The birds eat the seeds and then can fully consume these seeds later, while they’re resting, or during the evening. Other warming methods include fluffing up like a ball or roosting below the snow, where -50 degrees feels like +25 degrees.

Ready In: 2 Hours 55 Minutes Servings: 8 INGREDIENTS: 4 slices bacon, cut into 1/2-inch pieces 3 1/2 pounds beef short ribs salt and ground black pepper to taste 6 sprigs fresh thyme, leaves stripped 1 bay leaf 1 onion, diced 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 cup dry sherry 1 quart beef broth DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). 2. Place bacon in a large skillet and cook over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Transfer crisped bacon with a slotted spoon to a Dutch oven. Retain bacon drippings in the skillet. 3. Generously season short ribs with salt and pepper. 4. Heat bacon drippings in the same skillet over high heat. Cook short ribs in hot bacon fat until browned and caramelized on all sides, 3 to 5 minutes per side. Transfer ribs to the Dutch oven, reserving drippings in the skillet. Add thyme and bay leaf to the ribs mixture. 5. Reduce heat under the same skillet to medium. Cook and stir onion in the skillet until soft and golden, 5 to 10 minutes. Add garlic; cook and stir until fragrant, about 30 seconds. 6. Whisk flour into onion mixture and stir until the mixture becomes paste-like and light golden brown, 1 to 3 minutes. 7. Pour sherry into onion mixture; cook until thick and hot, about 2 minutes. Pour onion-sherry mixture into Dutch oven; add beef broth and salt to taste. Bring ribs mixture to a simmer and cover the Dutch oven with a lid. 8. Transfer Dutch oven to the preheated oven and cook until short ribs are fork tender, about 2 hours. Remove ribs to a serving dish, reserving sauce in the pot. 9. Set Dutch oven high heat and boil sauce until reduced and slightly thickened, about 10 minutes. Spoon reduced sauce over ribs.

Kids, Pens & Hobbies After reading couple of short stories from a certain writer from the Bayfield area, it occurred to me that we all have stories to tell. I say this while writing with a pen from my now ex-wifes chiropractic business. I must confess that every time I go there I try to pick up another pen. She buys the good ones, made of steel with a large soft plastic area where your fingers rest. I on the other hand usually buy the cheap plastic bic ones or get them from the bank. (they always have them out for the taking, along with an unlimited supply of suckers) I usually get one of those too. Another unique quality of these chiropractic pens is that they have at least 9 different parts when you disassemble them, as my boys often do. Then it becomes a puzzle of sorts, to see how many variations of instruments one can create. Though I rarely indulge in such nonsense myself, I do have two boys that regularly hold competitions to see who can come up with best idea. I have seen several

pen disassembled and put back together into more contraptions than you can imagine. Add some scotch tape, paper clips and a few legos and they can create an all out war, with double spring ink cartridge launchers and spinning metallic shields that fend off there siblings assault. I can honestly say that I do not feel guilty about my occasional pen heist. Besides she can write it off as advertising expense, who knows there may be potential clients in that Lego box that sits in the corner of the living room under the board games. Plus our kids are getting an education in physics and engineering, they learn about gravity, inertia, trajectory and how the ink and plastic mix with the wax of a candle when held over the flame. (another scientific experiment done at the kitchen table while I was in the shower). It amazes me how children can sit still in front of a TV or computer for hours until the second you go to do laundry or take a shower, at that moment

The Lady Eagles Win another Regional Final By: Amanda Roberts Edited by: Samantha Schult

The Mount Horeb gym was packed with cheering fans as the Barneveld Lady Eagles and the Benton-Shellsburg Zephyrs battled for the Regional Final. It was a close score-Eagle’s 9, Benn Shull 5- ending the first period, as the Lady Eagles were just getting warmed up. The second period really got the crowd cheering and on their feet as the Eagles only allowed the Zephyrs to score 4 points to their 16; going into half time with a good lead. Coming out into the second half the Lady Eagles kept the crowd cheering as they held the Benton-Shellsburg Zephyrs to only scoring 6 points in the second half; allowing the Lady Eagles to win another Regional Final. The top scorers were Hannah Whitish with 22 points and Maggie Oimoen with 10, leaving the final score to be 46 to 15.

Lynx Sectional Semi-Finals By: Carolyn Karls Edited by: Amanda Roberts

On Tuesday February 24th, the Middleton Metro Lynx traveled to Sun Prairie, to take on the cougars in the second round of playoffs. The Lynx came out strong in the first period and where playing a lot of back and forth hockey. Neither team ended up scoring in the first period. The nerves of playoffs must have gotten to the Lynx in the second period and the cougars took advantage; scoring three goals in the second period. The Lynx thought that they could recover but they were two deep in the hole. The cougars would score one more time before the end of the game making it 4-0 with the cougars winning and moving on. The Lynx season was cut short. Congratulations on a hard fought season and thank you to the seniors, Megan Sheehan, Carolyn Karls, Amanda Holman and Taylor Olstad.

Helmenstine to be guest at Brigham 125 Event CANDIDATES FORUM by Jerry Davis John F. Helmenstine, who authored a two-volume history of the area, will be a guest at Brigham’s Quasqui-centennial open house April 11, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Legion Hall in Barneveld. He has agreed to speak for a couple minutes about his work as a local historian and his helping to found the Iowa County Historical Society. Helmenstine, who lives in the Milwaukee area (where he taught high school history) with his wife, Dorothy, researched and wrote Weehaukaja: A History of the Village of Barneveld and the Town of Brigham, published in 1976 and 1977. Helmenstine is pictured on page 92 in Volume 1, along with the members of the 1961 Iowa County Co-Champions. This was an eight-man football team. Weehaukaja is a Winnebago word for a high place with a wonderful view, Helmenstine

states in his books. The origin of these books began in 1966, when Helmenstine was a student at what is now UW-Platteville. He was enrolled in Wisconsin History and did a paper on his home town, Barneveld. After handing in the project to his professor, he eventually decided to expand the project and spent more than two years researching, writing and editing his two books while teaching history in the Milwaukee area. Helmenstine grew more excited about local history and this project during the bicentennial year, too. “Everyone seemed to get hooked on history at that time, so I spent weekends coming back to the area and reading tons of Dodgeville Chronicles, talked to people and got information and borrowed photographs from them,” he said. Anyone interested in history of the area should not overlook the Iowa County Historical Society and UW-Platteville, he

advises. In addition to comments from Helmenstine, Madeline Morgan, chair of Brigham 125, a Town of Brigham Ad hoc committee, said the program will include a light lunch served throughout the event, displays of old photographs, and live music between 2-3 p.m. Linda Seeley, from Ridgeway, will play piano and Natalie Elfring will sing several songs. Several long-time Brigham residents have agreed to tell a tale or two or have submitted something to be read by Steve Morgan, the master of ceremonies. Continue to watch for reminders during the next several weeks in this publication.

The Barneveld High School Government 10 class will be hosting a candidates forum for the candidates running for the Town of Brigham, the Village of Barneveld and the school board, including Village President and Town Chairperson.

This will be held in the Barneveld school cafeteria on Monday, March 16, 2015 at 7:00 PM. This event will help you learn more about the candidates running for these positions. There will be refreshments after all the questions have been asked. This time will also be an opportunity to to speak with and get to know your candidates. Please join us!

If you’ve started any seeds, those baby plants are probably shooting up like Jack in the beanstalks. Be sure that you check them every day to observe their progress. Water whenever the soil surface is dry to the touch and feed them every other week with a gentle starter fertilizer. Pinch back any leggy growth and realize that this is a signal that your young plants need more light. Consider purchasing a lighting system designed for seedling trays if your plants are getting spindly. Try brushing your hand over the tops of the plants to simulate a gentle breeze. This will make for stronger stems and stimulate root growth. There is a whole list of flowering annuals that you can start now from seed in anticipation of summer’s warmer days. A

mix of zinnias, pinks, and snapdragons would make a splendid cutting garden. Be sure to keep the soil warm and evenly moist until the seeds germinate. As soon as they sprout, provide plenty of light and air circulation. Make sure to use a soil-less mix to avoid damping off disease. It is still too early to seed in tomatoes as they grow too fast and will get too large if started before April. But you can plant your hot peppers. It takes some time for the fruit to develop those high Scoville heat units. If you stored any geraniums for the winter, it’s time to pot them. Use lightweight potting mix and a clean container. Cut the plants back to about 6 inches above the soil line and water thoroughly. Once the new buds pop, move them to a sunny win-

dow until its warm enough to move them outside. Tropical plants that you have stored in semi-dormancy, like elephant ears, mandevilla, and fruiting figs, are ready to start growing, too. Sometimes they sprout to let you know that dormancy is over. Bring the plants into a warm, sunny location and start watering very moderately. Don’t fertilize just yet, waiting for about a month until growth begins in earnest. If you haven’t planted any tender bulbs such as cannas, dahlias, and begonias, what are you waiting for? These plants will flower all summer and could all be planted directly outdoors when the weather is more clement, but you will give your garden and containers a colorful jump if you start them now.

Voting Influenced Brigham’s Creation by Jerry Davis It was voting, or the inconvenience of trying to vote, that may have helped create what in now the Town of Brigham. While several versions of tales still abound regarding how the Town of Brigham, now 125 years old as of March 12, 2015, came to be, one Town of Ridgeway resident says it was horses and voting that were the greatest influences. The tongue-in-cheek version is that some of the folks in the now Town of Brigham “stole” more than half the land from Town of Ridgeway to create their own town. But Bob Thomas, long time Town of Ridgeway town board member and chair, believes he has the correct explanation, but is quick to point out he is not 125 years old to remember the events himself. He’s read and

heard the stories, though. “There was an agreement between Town of Dodgeville and Town of Ridgeway to divide the land into three towns about equal in size,” Thomas said. “Ridgeway was just too big when residents had to go to vote riding horses and in wagons. It was just too far.” But, Thomas said, the plan stalled in its midst when Brigham was created as a full town, taking 5/8 of the original Town of Ridgeway. The Town of Dodgeville would not give up a row of land sections on the Town of Dodgeville’s east side, leaving Ridgeway short one row of land sections. The results support Thomas’ explanation because current Iowa County maps show the Town of Dodgeville to be larger than most of the other 13 towns, while Town of Ridge-

way is one of the smallest towns in Iowa County. An Iowa County ordinance from March 12, 1890 explains the process clearing the Brigham folks of any wrong doing. Section 1 of that 125-year old Iowa County ordinance states: “That the town of Ridgeway, in the county of Iowa and state of Wisconsin be, and it hereby is, vacated and abolished.” At that moment, there was no longer a Town of Ridgeway. The unnamed parcel was then divided into two new towns, one being made up of 5/8 of the land and the other being 3/8 of the land. Each new town, created by the same Iowa County ordinance, was given a name. The 3/8 portion chose to use Town of Ridgeway as their new name, just like the old name.

The beginning of a 1890 Iowa County Ordinance outlines the abolishment of the old Town of Ridgeway, leading the way to the creation of the Town of Brigham and a much smaller new Town of Ridgeway.

The larger portion chose the name Brigham, named after Ebenezer Brigham, who, by the way, lived in Dane County at the time. The act of creating a Town of Brigham was not easy, either, because the residents of the then Town of Ridgeway voted three times before supporting the split. It now seems they were right in being skeptical of politics at the time.
