President’s Perspective Greetings; National Quilting Day was established in 1991 by the National Quilting Association. It is the third Saturday in March every year; and has become so popular that it has been un-officially expanded so that the entire month of March is now widely known as National Quilting Month. You can read more about National Quilt Day on the NQA website at www.nqaquilts.org/nqd. The Greater Ann Arbor Quilt Guild will be celebrating National Quilting Day at the next quilt day meeting on March 8. The purpose of National Quilting Day is to celebrate quilts and quilters. What better way to celebrate an activity than to share it with someone? We are encouraging members to bring at least one guest to the March meeting. There will be no guest fees in March and your guests will not be counted against the two free guests each member is allowed per year. Share your love of quilting by inviting a friend, neighbor, family member or co-worker to accompany you to the March meeting. To honor fellow quilters of the past, I will be bringing a vintage quilt and sharing its story as my contribution to Show and Tell. Please bring your antique or vintage quilt and join me in sharing your story during Show and Tell. Joanne Esch, our Vice-President of Membership, and the Membership Committee will have greeters near the entrance with flower leis for our guests. Thanks to generous donations from Karlane Belaire, Sue Betz, Peggy Plawchan, Pat Wagner, Sonja Hagen and Kathy Schmidt, a small gift will be given to each guest and hostess. Kathy Johnson is working with Joanne on a brochure to hand out at the meeting. I will be hosting a guild orientation session in the auditorium after the regular meeting. The orientation will be targeted toward new members and guests, but anyone is welcome to attend. The State of Michigan has greatly reduced funding for domestic violence and homeless shelters for 2014. As a result, Safe House Center has lost about 1/3 of their annual funding. It is not possible for us to make up this entire deficit; but there are ways to help. Before purchasing items from Amazon, go to the Safe House Center website at http://www.safehousecenter.org and click on the Amazon link. Amazon will donate 7% of your purchase to Safe House at no cost to you. The fund raiser quilts for 2014 are almost ready. Ann Bednar will have photos available soon. Let’s make this a record year for fundraising by asking friends and family members to make a $10 donation to Safe House and get their name in the November drawing for one of these beautiful quilts. Katie McGrath has volunteered to take over the advertising for the newsletter. This is a very important position. The $15 collected from the membership is not enough to cover all the costs of producing the newsletter. Without advertisers we could not continue to print and mail hard copies. Let’s all remember to thank Katie at the March meeting. There are less than 170 days left until the quilt show! Do you have a quilt ready? Me neither; but, I am working on one. July seems a long way away; but it isn’t really; not when you consider how long it takes to make a quilt that you would be willing to display to 2000 strangers. I look forward to seeing you at the March meeting. In the meantime, stay warm by snuggling under your favorite quilt! Ginia

SafeHouse Sewing Event NOT SCHEDULED in March

QUILT DAY March 8, 2014 AGENDA 8:30 Doors open. Members admitted with 2014 membership card. Guest admission: $ 10.00

There will be NO SafeHouse Sewing Event in March due to NO SPACE available at WCC. Sincerely, Jan Kosko

9:00 Business meeting 9:45 Guest Speaker: Carol Loessel 11:00 Show & Tell Vendor:

Afternoon Alternatives

March Guest Speaker: Carol Loessel Carol Loessel loves traditional quilts. Her quilt designs reflect this. She began quilting in the early 1970s when all that was being taught were traditional methods for traditional quilts. Carol has accumulated quite a collection of scraps over all those years of quilting. This collection has led to some creative quilts, and after being told numerous times “you should write a pattern for that quilt”, she did just that! She has three pattern series: “Recipes for Leftovers,” “Thanks, Grandma,” and “Scrappy Too”. These patterns can be seen on her website http://carolsscrapquilts.web.com

Do you have orphan blocks at your house? Have you ever picked up a pile of blocks from the Safe House table and thought, “hmmm”? Are some of those quilted, maybe left over from a free-motion class? Well, stop by the Afternoon Alternative table following the March meeting, and Liz Rodriguez will show you her technique for turning those blocks into finished quilts by means of creative sashing. WEBMASTER NEWS As the new webmaster for the GAAQG website, I am making some small changes to the website pages. But I need input from members. Is there anything you'd like to see on the website that isn't there? Is there something you would like to see displayed differently, to make it easier to find information you need? One area that I would like to keep updated weekly is the notice board area. Please send me items which you think might be of interest to the general membership. I would like to have something new each week. Since the weekend is when I'll be making the majority of changes, please check the website each Monday for the latest information. Please send any and all comments to [email protected]. I welcome your input! Christa Hitchcock,

GAAQG Guest Speaker: Sue Holdaway-Heys, May 2014 http://www.sueholdaway-heys.com

Sue lives with her husband Ron in Ann Arbor with a garden out of control and a house that could use a vacuum. Her 3 children kept her busy for years but her 3 grandchildren are a delight and the biggest happy source of distraction from quiltmaking:-) Sue has been with The Button Petter Gallery in Douglas for 15 years. She works with other galleries and art consultants as well as private collectors. Commission work has filled most of her time in the last five years. Sue hopes to have time to create some really fun large pieces in the next year. Saturday Lecture, May 17 – Recent Commission Work-My Process: Sue talks about her work, made from the following philosophy: My work involves the endless possibilities for exploration with the studio art quilt. I try to capture a mood or atmosphere with the use of space, light, color, and movement. It is with a conscious effort I hope to continue the clear relationship with the traditionally made folk art quilt. My aesthetic concerns are common to the visual arts - in particular, painting. Friday Workshop, May 16 – Hollyhock or Sunflower Quilt: After creating the composition in fabric color choices made by the participant we will use fabric paints and watercolor pencils to add depth and a three dimensional aspect. Some may have the opportunity to begin quilting but we will discuss quilting ideas for everyone as well as "finishing " possibilities. There will be 2 options to choose for flower quilts -they will be small... approx. 15" x 20". The flower quilts will be hollyhocks or sunflowers . Sunday Workshop, May 18 – Landscape Quilt: Students will have a choice between an Italian type landscape and something more woodsy. It will be 15" x 20” approx. in size. Create a landscape with Sue’s derived composition and choose your own colors so you can have a night scene or dark colors, etc....

GAAQG 2014 Quilt Show: Celebrating the Quilt We are excited to be planning this year’s quilt show and lucky to have so much talent and experience from our participating Committee Chairs. Much of the process will be familiar to participants, but here are a few notable items. Quilt descriptions are part of the Show Booklet. Many members commented that they missed having the descriptions in the 2010 booklet. This adds to the expense of producing the booklets, but we will try very hard to offset that by selling more ad space. You will have the opportunity to fill out your quilt show application electronically via a link on our website. The Quilt Show page and instructions will be available by the time the newsletter is published. This is the preferred option! It will make it much easier for the volunteers producing the show booklet and the exhibit cards because it eliminates the need to retype everything from your handwritten form (as well as deciphering your handwriting!). The hard copy forms are still included in the newsletter if you aren’t comfortable using the website. There will be a separate Silent Auction each day. To encourage active bidding and accommodate the many viewers who attend just one day of the show, we’re going to have a set of items for Saturday and another set for Sunday. In addition we’ll have a “buy it now” option. We need your contributions! Finish up your class samples, experiment with a new technique and play! Pieces can be in any style, color or technique and the size can be up to 40 inches. Of course, if you have a wonderful piece that’s a few inches larger, we’d be delighted to have it. These items are auctioned off to raise funds that help offset the cost of producing the show (specifically the rental of frames and the labor for set up and take down). What’s not new? Each quilt entry requires a 2 hour stint volunteering for the show. Admission is required for anyone viewing the show, including guild members and show volunteers. This is not a juried show. We encourage every guild member to submit at least one quilt, even if it’s your very first quilt! We’re proud of you and your quilt – show it off! The show entry deadline is hard and fast. We want your quilt to be part of the show, so please submit your entry no later than May 17, 2014. Check the website for regular updates and information regarding the show including posters and bookmarks! Sonja Hagen – 2014 Show Chair & your many wonderful committee chairs

Betty Wilson It is with great sadness that I report the passing on February 6 of Betty Wilson, a founding member and former president of the Greater Ann Arbor Quilt Guild. Betty was an active member of the guild from the first meeting on January 31, 1987 until just a few years ago when health issues kept her closer to home. Betty served on the Executive Board and held the offices of President, Vice-President of Membership, and Historian. She served on the first Quilt Show committee and the first QU committee. Over the years, she chaired numerous committees, ran quilt day workshops and volunteered in countless ways. She is remembered with fondness and will be greatly missed. The guild will make a donation in Betty's memory to the Great Lakes Quilt Center at the Michigan State University Museum

GAAQG Guest Speaker: Lyric Kinard, July 2014 http://lyrickinard.com/ Lyric Montgomery Kinard is an award winning artist with a passion for sparking the creativity that she knows each of her students posses. With playful support and gentle encouragement she will take you through your first steps on a new path, seeing the world through the eyes of an artist. As an artist, author, and educator she transforms cloth into art in her studio and timid spirits into confident creatives in the classroom.

Lyric was recognized for her talents as the 2011 International Association of Professional Quilters Teacher of the Year and is the author of the book Art + Quilt: design principles and creativity exercises. She has written extensively for Quilting Arts Magazine, appeared on Quilting Arts TV, and has two DVD Workshops, Surface Design Sampler Platter, and Bead It Like You Mean It. She has studied with many well known textile artists around the country and continues to expand her skills in the area of surface design. She has a BA in English Literature from the University of Utah and has also formally studied music and architecture. She currently lives in Cary, North Carolina with her husband and some of their five children. See more at Lyric’s website!

Saturday Lecture, July 19 – The Elements of Art for Quilters: Kick-start your creativity and learn about the basic elements and principles of good design. Learn why some colors fizz while others explode, why some quilts calm and some excite. A few simple tools from the artists kit will help you take your work, whether traditional or contemporary, to the next level.

Friday Workshop, July 18 – Surface Design Sampler: Can’t choose which surface design technique you want most to learn? Try a taste of each! Make a small art quilt or book cover while playing with paint, foil, photo-transfer, screen printing and stamp carving, and beading. Students will create a small fabric collage on batting, learn different surface design techniques, and come home with a small art-quilt or a book-cover. Techniques include printing and stenciling, stamp carving, screen printing, foiling, photo transfer and beading. If you choose to buy a kit all you’ll need to bring is scissors and either an XActo knife or lino carving tools. Wear old clothes.

Saturday Afternoon Workshop, July 19 – Creative Collaborative Collage: Ready for some fast and frenetic fun with fabric? During this free flowing event participants will be taught various design basics such as color schemes, focal point, proportion, formulas for making a face, etc. while collaboratively creating several 4×6 art cards. Expect lots of learning and laughter, a little creative chaos, and the opportunity to make new friends. Join IAPQ 2011 Teacher of the Year, Lyric Kinard for a few fabulous hours of playing design games. Come ready to make new friends, laugh, share, and make some ART!
