Mark Lie Mark loved watching the cake shows and competitions on TV, and thought that would be an interesting hobby to try. In 2006, his wife got him a basic cake decorating class offered from a local hobby store for his birthday. Since then he has taken three other basic classes and continually learns via the internet and through national cake expos and seminars. He works mainly with fondant and - sodales. gumpaste, but also uses other edible cake mediums like; buttercream, modeling chocolate, sugar, and gelatin. Mark originally hails from Hudsonville, Michigan and now resides in the southwestern suburbs of Chicago. He graduated with a BFA in graphic design and a minor in sculpture from Michigan State University in 1992. Mark has always had an interest in art and design. With the wide reach of the internet – CakeCentral, facebook and flickr, he has received accolades by having his cakes published in CakeCentral magazine (Aug. & Sept. 2010), and also has been showcased in the Oswego Ledger Sentinel, Oswego. Patch.com, CakeWrecks.com and Squidoo.com. He has appeared on national television on the Food Network Cake Challenge - Awesome 80’s cakes in 2011 and in 2012, he was also the cake artist on Sugar Dome - “The Wonderful world of Dr. Seuss” episode. In 2013, he is also appearing on Season 3 of Halloween Wars. Other awards include Mike Elder’s CakeFest-Blacksheep Award-2012 and NOARDA’s “That Takes the Cake” Live cake challenge- April 2012. He would eventually like to open his own shop, attend culinary or pastry school, teach demonstration techniques and attend various master decorating classes. When he is not decorating, he enjoys life with his wife and two children, motorcycles, snowboarding and photography. Mark has always immersed himself in his passions. “Decorating cake has allowed me to showcase my creativity in new and innovative ways. The greatest reward is watching my clients’ amazement when they first see the cake. I strive to exceed their expectations.”
