Course Meetings MTTh, 2:30am - 3:45am, DA111. Textbook Precalculus, 5th Edition by Stewart, Redlin, and Watson. Learning Outcomes The overall objective of the course is to develop critical thinking skills by using algebraic and analytic methods. We will cover material from Chapters 27 and 10 in the text. Please make sure that you review Ch. 1. This course introduces advanced topics in algebraic and rational expressions, factoring, exponents, and radicals; theory of equations and inequalities; functions. Analytic geometry, trigonometry. If time permits, we may finish the semester with topics from Ch. 11. Calculators/Cell Phones You will not be allowed to use calculators for the exams and quizzes. If you choose to bring a cell phone with you to class, please be courteous and turn the ringer volume off before class begins. You may not use your cell phone as a calculator during exams or quizzes. Procedure Your final letter grade will be determined by your performance on regular quizzes, two midterm exams, and one final. Extra work including pop quizzes or extra homework might be given for extra points. Quizzes 80 points Two midterm 200 points Final Exam 150 points Total 430 (100%) Your total % = your total score/430 * 100. Minimum letter grade will be assigned according to the following rule: A+ ≥ 98%, A ≥ 90%, A− ≥ 86 32 %, B + ≥ 83 13 %, B ≥ 80%, B − ≥ 76 32 %, C + ≥ 73 31 %, C ≥ 70%, C − ≥ 66 23 %, D+ ≥ 63 31 %, D ≥ 60%, D− ≥ 56 32 %, F < 56 23 %.

Blackboard For your information, your scores and announcements will be regularly updated in BLACKBOARD (https://blackboard.louisville.edu/webapps/login/) Homework A list of recommended exercises is included with this syllabus. It is very important to complete the exercises for each section as soon as possible after the section has been covered in class in order not to fall behind. Homework assignments will not be collected. Quizzes There will be quizzes most Thursdays. There will be no quiz when there is a midterm exam. Missed quizzes may not be made up or taken early. There will be 8 regular quizzes, each of which counts 10 points. The rest regular quizzes (about 2 quizzes) are optional and can give you extra points. Most quiz problems will be similar to the homework assignments. It is strongly recommended to read the section(s) to be covered before attending each lecture. Make-up NO MAKE-UP EXAMS (two midterm exams and one final) will be given unless you report your absence before the exam, get a permission from me, and you show doctor’s note or some documents for excuse by the following class day. Student Responsibilities You owe it to yourself to follow these minimum guidelines: • Attend all classes. Arrive on time and stay for the entire class period. • Class time is limited. Don’t waste your time sleeping or texting. • Take advantage of office hours and REACH tutors. • Complete all assigned problems. Arrange your schedule so that you have 3-4 hours per week free to study. • Don’t chat with your classmates during the lecture. Remarks 1. The instructor reserves the right to make changes in the syllabus when necessary to meet learning objectives, to compensate for missed classes, or for similar reason. 2. As for academic dishonesty policy, you must read the Section on Academic Policies and Procedures of the University of Louisville.
