Grade: 5th Subject: Math Expectation(s): Can add, subtract, multiply and divide with large and small negative and positive numbers Materials needed: Pencil, paper, The Math Curse by Jon Scieszka, attached worksheet Lesson Description: Math Curse Read through the story The Math Curse along with your student. Then complete the attached worksheet of problems based on the book . After you’re finished, have your student create math word problems based on their own everyday activities. Use a problem or problems from the book to model the typical elements of a word problem (introduction and initial situation; change in that situation; question to answer). Teaching and learning tips/strategies: • Reading word problems correctly and translating their information into solvable mathematical equations is a crucial part of math (and science). Encourage your student to read each problem carefully to ensure full understanding and to plan out their strategy before solving. • Some of the attached problems cannot be solved due to lack of information. Ask your student to provide reasons why they can not be solved. Talking through the process of problem solving encourages critical thinking and helps students become more confident and comfortable in their knowledge of math concepts. To extend this activity even further, have your student write a sentence or two about how they arrived at each of their answers. • Don’t forget to have fun and praise your student’s efforts!
