Shipbuilders Run in Sixth Annual NNS 5K On Saturday, May 4, more than 1,100 runners and walkers participated in the sixth annual Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) 5K hosted by HealthWaves. “The 5K is a fun event that encourages families, friends, and co-workers to get out and do something active together,” said Brady Goggin, HealthWaves program coordinator. The 5K started at Victory Landing Park near the Virginia Advanced Shipbuilding and Carrier Integration Center (VASCIC) and continued north on West Avenue to 35th Street. From 35th Street participants crossed over to Washington Avenue and proceeded north to 50th Street before returning to cross the finish line at Victory Landing Park For the second consecutive year, NNS’ Engineering and Design shipbuilders

NNS Dedicates 11th Habitat for Humanity Home On May 1, Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) held a dedication ceremony to welcome home Wynder family to their new home and to celebrate the 11th consecutive Habitat for Humanity home NNS has helped to build since 2002. During the event, NNS leadership joined Hampton Mayor Molly Ward, Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors President David L. Hancock, Hampton Redevelopment and Housing Authority Board Commissioner Steve Brown and other city and business leaders to present the keys to Shereen Wynder and her daughters, Shakira and Treasure. “While this house was built by the hands of shipbuilders, it will be filled with the heart of the Wynder family and the many people who have volunteered their time leading to the construction of this beautiful home,” said Ron Murray, vice president of Quality and Process Excellence. A team of NNS volunteers began building the 1,400-square-foot, three-bedroom, two-bath house in Hampton in January.

Interested in Joining HOLA? Cinco de Mayo is a day to celebrate Mexican heritage and to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War. Most people compare Cinco de Mayo to the United State’s Independence Day celebration, but Mexico actually celebrates their national patriotic holiday on Sept. 16. To learn more about Hispanic culture, look for upcoming events with Newport News Shipbuilding’s (NNS) newest employee resource group; Hispanic Outreach and Leadership Alliance (HOLA). Membership is open to all NNS employees. To become a member, contact Joshua Rolon (E44) at 534-1391 or for more information, contact Debi Cross (O88) at 688-4438.

This Week in NNS’ History On May 9, 1919, a Cadillac ambulance purchased through a shipyard employee contribution fund arrived. Intended as a donation to the Red Cross for use overseas in World War I, the ambulance arrived as the war ended. The Red Cross used the vehicle briefly for homecoming servicemen then returned it to Newport News Shipbuilding where it became the company’s first ambulance.

Career Pathways Hosts Second Annual Egg Drop Contest Career Pathways hosted their second annual City-Wide Egg Drop Competition on April 25. A group of students representing each middle and high school in Newport News were present for the competition. Judging was based on egg capsule design, material cost (staying under budget) and the students’ presentation skills. The 2013 winners were Heritage High School and Booker T. Washington Middle School. This year, a special award was also given to Passage Middle and Woodside High for the most creative egg capsule design. Special thanks to all volunteers, executive sponsors and employees who came out to cheer on and support the students.
